Book The Christian Encounter with Muhammad

Download or read book The Christian Encounter with Muhammad written by Charles Tieszen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh appraisal of Muhammad that considers the widest possible history of the ways in which Christians have assessed his prophethood. To medieval Christian communities, Muhammad-the leader of a religious and political community that grew quickly and with relative success-was an enigma. Did God really send him as a prophet with a revelation? Was the political success of the community he founded a divine validation? Or were he and his followers inspired by something evil? Despite their attempts, modern Christians continued to be puzzled by Muhammad. The Qur'an provided a framework for understanding and honouring Jesus; was it possible for Christians to reciprocate with regard to Muhammad? This book applies the same analysis to both medieval and modern assessments of Muhammad, in order to demonstrate the continuities and disparities present in literature from the two eras.

Book The Qur an in Christian Muslim Dialogue

Download or read book The Qur an in Christian Muslim Dialogue written by Corrie Block and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering an analysis of Christian-Muslim dialogue across four centuries, this book highlights those voices of ecumenical tone which have more often used the Qur’an for drawing the two faiths together rather than pushing them apart, and amplifies the voice of the Qur’an itself. Finding that there is tremendous ecumenical ground between Christianity and Islam in the voices of their own scholars, this book ranges from a period of declining ecumenism during the first three centuries of Islam, to a period of resurging ecumenism during the most recent century until now. Among the ecumenical voices in the Christian-Muslim dialogue, this book points out that the Qur’an itself is possibly the strongest of those voices. These findings are cause for, and evidence of, hope for the Christian–Muslim relationship: that although agreement may never be reached, dialogue has led at times to very real mutual understanding and appreciation of the religious other. Providing a tool for those pursuing understanding and mutual appreciation between the Islamic and Christian faiths, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Islam, the Qur’an and the history of Christian-Muslim relations.

Download or read book The Beginning written by Dr. Dino J. Pedrone and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man walks along a road leading to the Sea of Galilee. Messiahs were plentiful in the first century. In Judaism, the idea of Messiah referred to “a king appointed by the Almighty.” After the Hasmonean kingdom in the first century and the Roman-Jewish wars in the first two centuries, the idea of a Messiah expanded. The Messiah was considered to be “the individual who would deliver the Jewish people from the Roman Empire,” thus ushering in the golden age of Messiah. Now here comes another. A leader of a Jewish sect was crucified, and there were those who claimed he rose from the grave. It does sound a little preposterous. Messiahs could fill volumes with their plans and heroics, but the obvious questions are, Where are they now? Where are their followers? A man who gathers twelve apparent misfits of society and leads them while he teaches, heals, delivers evil spirits, and raises some from the dead is certainly unique. Is he one of the many self-proclaimed Messiahs, or is he different? The faith that this man founded today represents nearly one-third of the world’s population. The Beginning details how this movement started. From a small group called The Way to the conversion of a vitriolic Pharisee to meetings with well-known political activists the story begins. So snuggle up; get a nice, warm drink; and follow The Beginning—the early story of Christianity.

Book Abingdon New Testament Commentaries Acts

Download or read book Abingdon New Testament Commentaries Acts written by Beverly Roberts Gaventa and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a striking departure from customary readings of the Acts of the Apostles as the story of the growth of the church, Gaventa argues that Luke's second volume has to do with nothing less than the activity of God. From the beginning of the story at Jesus' Ascension and extending until well past the final report of Paul's activity in Rome, Luke narrates a relentlessly theological story, in which matters of institutional history or biography play only an incidental role. Gaventa pays careful attention to Luke's story of God, as well as to the numerous characters who set themselves in opposition to God's plan.

Book Cross Veneration in the Medieval Islamic World

Download or read book Cross Veneration in the Medieval Islamic World written by Charles Tieszen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most common religious practices among medieval Eastern Christian communities was their devotion to venerating crosses and crucifixes. Yet many of these communities existed in predominantly Islamic contexts, where the practice was subject to much criticism and often resulted in accusations of idolatry. How did Christians respond to these allegations? Why did they advocate the preservation of a practice that was often met with confusion or even contempt?
