"She deserves to die" are the chilling words whispered in the dark that compel a young dancer to discover who haunts her studio---and why. New to Chicago, 15-year-old Libby Nobleton stands outside the city's premier studio, L'Esprit. Having studied French in school, she fluently pronounces the word "le spree" and knows it means "the spirit." While innocently pursuing her passion, unearthly events torment Libby. Lights flicker, eerie shadows glide, and the open door of the abandoned elevator menacingly beckons. Libby struggles between her love for her new studio and the fear that someone or something might be out to get her. When a legendary statue resembling her ballet idol mysteriously appears, it opens a portal to the past exposing Libby to L'Esprit's timeless love story and turbulent past. At last, relying on faith and courage, Libby witnesses the shocking yet inspirational truth about L'Esprit's most tragic night, but who will believe her? The Legend of L'Esprit is a novel of paranormal, romance, and mystery and is appropriate for tweens, teens, and dance lovers of any age. The book includes an educational ballet glossary and each chapter begins with a dance term and definition that subtly relates to the adventure about to unfold. Book A Critical Study of Condillac s

Download or read book A Critical Study of Condillac s written by Ellen McNiven Hine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Traite des systemes is a milestone in the intellectual history of the eighteenth century. This is a study of its content, structure, sources and importance. It includes a discussion of Condillac's analysis of good and bad systems, the adequacy of his knowledge and under standing of the speculative metaphysics of the preceding century, the effectiveness of his method of attack on seventeenth-century metaphysical systems, his conception of empirical and scientific method, and in particular his understanding of the role of hypotheses, his application of the Newtonian scientific method to politics, physics, and the arts, and, finally, his preoccupation with the meaning of words and with the origin and purpose oflanguage. Speculative metaphysical systems, such as those of Descartes, Malebranche, Boursier, Leibniz and Spinoza, are attacked by Con dillac, as are popular superstitions and prejudices, with the weapon of linguistic criticism. It is the systematic use of this weapon which makes the Traite des systemes more than a reflection of his contem poraries' antipathy towards speculative metaphysics. In memory of my MOTHER and FATHER ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to several people. I should like first and foremost to thank Dr. W. H. Barber, who has for many years tirelessly given me encouragement and invaluable assistance. I wish to thank also Professors RH. Rasmussen, A. D. Wilshere and C. Wake for their help and their support in the early days of the preparation of this study. lowe special thanks also to Mrs. M. V.

Book Selected Poems of Victor Hugo

Download or read book Selected Poems of Victor Hugo written by Victor Hugo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-06 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although best known as the author of Notre Dame de Paris and Les Misérables, Victor Hugo was primarily a poet—one of the most important and prolific in French history. Despite his renown, however, there are few comprehensive collections of his verse available and even fewer translated editions. Translators E. H. and A. M. Blackmore have collected Victor Hugo's essential verse into a single, bilingual volume that showcases all the facets of Hugo's oeuvre, including intimate love poems, satires against the political establishment, serene meditations, religious verse, and narrative poems illustrating his mastery of the art of storytelling and his abiding concern for the social issues of his time. More than half of this volume's eight thousand lines of verse appear here for the first time in English, providing readers with a new perspective on each of the fascinating periods of Hugo's career and aspects of his style. Introductions to each section guide the reader through the stages of Hugo's writing, while notes on individual poems provide information not found in even the most detailed French-language editions. Illustrated with Hugo's own paintings and drawings, this lucid translation—available on the eve of Hugo's bicentenary—pays homage to this towering figure of nineteenth-century literature by capturing the energy of his poetry, the drama and satirical force of his language, and the visionary beauty of his writing as a whole.

Book Katherine Mansfield

Download or read book Katherine Mansfield written by Gerri Kimber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the reason why Katherine Mansfield's reputation in France has always been greater than in England. It examines the ways in which the French reception of Mansfield has idealised her persona to the extent of crafting a hagiography. Mansfield is placed within the general literary context of her era, exploring French literary tendencies at the time and juxtaposing them with the main literary trends in England. The author determines the motives behind the French critics' desire to put Mansfield on a pedestal, discusses how the three years she spent on French soil influenced her writing and whether the translations of her work collude in the myth surrounding her personality. This book is the first sustained attempt to establish interconnections between her own French influences (literary and otherwise) and the myth-making of the French critics and translators. The book also follows the critical appraisal of Mansfield's life and work in France from her death up to the present day, by closely analysing the differing French critical responses. The author reveals how these various strands combine to create a legend which has little basis in fact, thereby demonstrating how reception and translation determine the importance of an author's reputation in the literary world.
