Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "About the Author and Artist: I have taught art in the public schools of Casper, Wyoming for six years and received my Masters of Education through Lesley University while teaching. However, I am originally from Buffalo, Wyoming. Crazy Woman Creek runs through my family's ranch at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. I grew up only three miles from the mouth of the canyon. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Crazy Woman Canyon is one of my favorite places for inspiration as an artist. Each time I travel through the canyon, I find peace and tranquility. God's paint brush touches nature in a dazzling way, no two trips through the canyon are ever the same. My grandfather invited the Indians to camp at our family ranch, called Klondike, when they were traveling from the Black Hills to Ten Sleep. Klondike was one of the customary ten "sleeps" between the Black Hills of South Dakota and the town of Ten Sleep in the Big Horn Mountains. There is an identifiable landmark which can be seen far in the distance from the Big Horn. A large span of prominent pink, pointed, jagged rocks quilted together are north of Crazy Woman Canyon. These characterized pink rocks are known as Richter's Ridge. Louise Richter was a family friend who ranched in the Big Horns above Klondike. I felt a need to share the legend because of my roots and the stories I have heard as a child. The legend has been passed down by oral tradition for over 150 years. I am proud to share this story with those wondering about the Legend of Crazy Woman." -- back cover.

Book Crazy Woman Creek

Download or read book Crazy Woman Creek written by Linda M. Hasselstrom and published by HMH. This book was released on 2004-05-18 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “blessedly unromantic” portrait of real women’s lives in the contemporary American West (Kathleen Norris). This wide-ranging collection of essays and poetry reveals the day-to-day lives and experiences of a diverse collection of women in the western United States, from Buddhists in Nebraska to Hutterites in South Dakota to “rodeo moms.” A woman chooses horse work over housework; neighbors pull together to fight a raging wildfire; a woman rides a donkey across Colorado to raise money after the tragedy at Columbine. Women recall harmony found at a drugstore, at a powwow, in a sewing circle. Lively, heartfelt, urgent, enduring, Crazy Woman Creek celebrates community—connections built or strengthened by women that unveil a new West.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Ninety-two in the Shade and Cloudbursts—the stories of Gallatin Canyon are rich in the wit, compassion, and matchless language for which Thomas McGuane is celebrated. Set mostly in famed Big Sky Country, McGuane brings us an "astonishing" (The New York Times Book Review) collection in which place exerts the power of destiny. A boy makes a surprising discovery skating at night on Lake Michigan; an Irish clan in Massachusetts gather around their dying matriarch; a battered survivor of the glory days of Key West washes up on other shores. Several of the stories unfold in Big Sky country: a father tries to buy his adult son’s way out of virginity; a convict turns cowhand on a ranch; a couple makes a fateful drive through a perilous gorge. McGuane's people are seekers, beguiled by the land's beauty and myth, compelled by the fantasy of what a locale can offer, forced to reconcile dream and truth.

And JT Maroney, veteran river guide, is leading his 125th trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. For the next two weeks, his 13 passengers – strangers, mostly – will paddle, row, swim, ride the rapids, eat gourmet meals, sleep under the stars, and learn a lot about geology. They’ll learn a lot about each other, too – perhaps more than they want to know. Allegiances form, and likewise dissolve, in the course of an afternoon.
