Book The Legacy of John Kenneth Galbraith

Download or read book The Legacy of John Kenneth Galbraith written by STEVEN PRESSMAN and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John Kenneth Galbraith passed away on April 29, 2006, the economics profession lost one of its true giants. And this is not just because Galbraith was an imposing figure at 6 feet, 9 inches tall. Throughout his life, Galbraith advised Presidents, made important professional contributions to the discipline of economics, and also tried to explain economic ideas to the general public. This volume pays tribute to Galbraith’s life and career by explaining some of his major contributions to the canon of economic ideas. The papers describe the series of unique contributions that Galbraith made in many different areas. He was a founder of the Post Keynesian view of money, and a proponent of the Post Keynesian view that price controls were necessary to deal with the problem of inflation in a modern economy where large firms already control prices and prices are not determined by the market. He promulgated the view that firms manipulate individual preferences and tastes, through advertising and other means of persuasion, and he drew out the economic implications of this view. He was a student of financial frauds and euphoria, and a forerunner of the Post Keynesian/Minskean view of finance and how financial markets really work. This book was published as a special issue of the Review of Political Economy.

Book The New Industrial State

Download or read book The New Industrial State written by John Kenneth Galbraith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With searing wit and incisive commentary, John Kenneth Galbraith redefined America's perception of itself in The New Industrial State, one of his landmark works. The United States is no longer a free-enterprise society, Galbraith argues, but a structured state controlled by the largest companies. Advertising is the means by which these companies manage demand and create consumer "need" where none previously existed. Multinational corporations are the continuation of this power system on an international level. The goal of these companies is not the betterment of society, but immortality through an uninterrupted stream of earnings. First published in 1967, The New Industrial State continues to resonate today.

Book John Kenneth Galbraith

Download or read book John Kenneth Galbraith written by Richard Parker and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and times of America's celebrated economist, assessing his lessons-and warnings-for us today. John Kenneth Galbraith's books—among them The Affluent Society and American Capitalism—are famous for good reason. Written by a scholar renowned for energetic political engagement and irrepressible wit, they are models of provocative good sense that warn prophetically of the dangers of deregulated markets, war in Asia, corporate greed, and stock-market bubbles. Galbraith's work has also deeply-and controversially-influenced his own profession, and in Richard Parker's hands his biography becomes a vital reinterpretation of American economics and public policy. Born and raised on a small Canadian farm, Galbraith began teaching at Harvard during the Depression. He was FDR's "price czar" during the war and then a senior editor of Fortune before returning to Harvard and to fame as a bestselling writer. Parker shows how, from his early championing of Keynes to his acerbic analysis of America's "private wealth and public squalor," Galbraith regularly challenged prevailing theories and policies. And his account of Galbraith's remarkable friendship with John F. Kennedy, whom he served as a close advisor while ambassador to India, is especially relevant for its analysis of the intense, dynamic debates that economists and politicians can have over how America should manage its wealth and power. This masterful chronicle gives color, depth, and meaning to the record of an extraordinary life.

Book John Kenneth Galbraith

Download or read book John Kenneth Galbraith written by Richard Parker and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2005 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Today, more than a half century since his writing first won him widespread acclaim, Canadian-born Harvard professor John Kenneth Galbraith remains the world's most famous living economist. The author of four dozen books and more than eleven hundred articles, recipient of nearly fifty honorary degrees, a former ambassaor and presidential advisor, he has continued writing, traveling, and lecturing into his nineties...And he has, in innumerable ways, left his mark upon our times." YET, AS BIOGRAPHER Richard Parker explains, Galbraith remains a disputed figure. His eloquently liberal views have often been out of sync with prevailing political winds, and other economists have disparagingly called him "America's foremost economist for non-economists." How did an Ontario farm boy grow up to be this provocative, iconic thinker? Who is the man behind the quietly controversial ideas? With the recent fallout from deregulated markets, corporate greed and the cost of military might - all dangers Galbraith warned against - are his theories more relevant than ever? Richard Parker, an Oxford-trained economist and well-known writer on American politics and economics, assesses Galbraith's wide-ranging legacy in a much-anticipated biography that is not only exhaustive in its research and scope but a delight to read. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews with Galbraith and many of his contemporaries - including Arthur Schlesinger, as well as prominent economists, such as Nobel winners Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz - Parker reveals the man and the thinker, tracing a fascinating career and a life. A book for all those interested in the influence of economics on our politics and culture, and a must-read for biography fans, John Kenneth Galbraith: His Life, His Politics, His Economics is one of this year's most important books.
