Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this follow-up to his much-praised book Losing Small Wars: British Military Failure in Iraq and Afghanistan, Frank Ledwidge argues that Britain has paid a heavy cost - both financially and in human terms - for its involvement in the Afghanistan war. Ledwidge calculates the high price paid by British soldiers and their families, taxpayers in the United Kingdom, and, most importantly, Afghan citizens, highlighting the thousands of deaths and injuries, the enormous amount of money spent bolstering a corrupt Afghan government, and the long-term damage done to the British military's international reputation. In this hard-hitting exposé, based on interviews, rigorous on-the-ground research, and official information obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Ledwidge demonstrates the folly of Britain's extended participation in an unwinnable war. Arguing that the only true beneficiaries of the conflict are development consultants, international arms dealers, and Afghan drug kingpins, he provides a powerful, eye-opening, and often heartbreaking account of military adventurism gone horribly wrong."--

Book Wherever the Firing Line Extends

Download or read book Wherever the Firing Line Extends written by Ronan McGreevy and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War was the biggest conflict in Irish history. More men served and more men died than in all the wars before or since that the Irish fought in. Often forgotten at home and written out of Irish history, the Irish soldiers and their regiments found themselves more honoured in foreign fields. From the first shot monument in Mons to the plaque to the Royal Irish Lancers who liberated the town on Armistice Day 1918, Ronan McGreevy takes a tour of the Western Front. At a time when Ireland is revisiting its history and its place in the world, McGreevy looks at those places where the Irish made their mark and are remembered in the monuments, cemeteries and landscapes of France and Flanders.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Poetry

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Poetry written by Fran Brearton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty chapters, written by leading scholars across the world, describe the latest thinking on modern Irish poetry. The Handbook begins with a consideration of Yeats's early work, and the legacy of the 19th century. The broadly chronological areas which follow, covering the period from the 1910s through to the 21st century, allow scope for coverage of key poetic voices in Ireland in their historical and political context. From the experimentalism of Beckett, MacGreevy, and others of the modernist generation, to the refashioning of Yeats's Ireland on the part of poets such as MacNeice, Kavanagh, and Clarke mid-century, through to the controversially titled post-1969 'Northern Renaissance' of poetry, this volume will provide extensive coverage of the key movements of the modern period. The Handbook covers the work of, among others, Paul Durcan, Thomas Kinsella, Brendan Kennelly, Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, Michael Longley, Medbh McGuckian, and Ciaran Carson. The thematic sections interspersed throughout - chapters on women's poetry, religion, translation, painting, music, stylistics - allow for comparative studies of poets north and south across the century. Central to the guiding spirit of this project is the Handbook's consideration of poetic forms, and a number of essays explore the generic diversity of poetry in Ireland, its various manipulations, reinventions and sometimes repudiations of traditional forms. The last essays in the book examine the work of a 'new' generation of poets from Ireland, concentrating on work published in the last two decades by Justin Quinn, Leontia Flynn, Sinead Morrissey, David Wheatley, Vona Groarke, and others.

Book Government Communications

Download or read book Government Communications written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. Select Committee on Communications and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first report of the 2008-09 session from the Select Committee on Communications on the subject of Government Communications (HLP 7, ISBN 9780104014189). One of the most important tasks of government is to provide clear, truthful and factual information to citizens. Accurate and impartial communication of information about government policies, activities and services is critical to the democractic process. Government communication falls into two areas, with the media and with the public. The growth in the 24 hour media, has meant that the cost of Government communications have grown considerably. The last external review of Government communications took place in the 2003-04 session by Sir Robert Phillis, the Chief Executive of the Guardian Media Group (http://archive.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/gcreview/News/FinalReport.pdf). Since that review a number of changes to the structure and focus of Government Communications has taken place. This report sets out a number of recommendations, including: when there is sensitive information, the Government should commit to return to Parliament at the earliest opportunity to give an account of developments; that the Prime Minister should draw all Ministers' attention to the guidance in the Ministerial Code that the most important announcements of Government policy should be made in the first instance to Parliament; further, that new information should always be provided on a fair and equal basis to all interested journalists; that the morning briefing to journalists, should appear live on the Number 10 website; that the Leader of the House of Commons should reinstate a weekly briefing on parliamentary business; that all major press conferences should be live on the internet; it is important that Ministers make clear that special advisers must follow the guidance available and stay within set limits; that where possible, high-flying civil servants should spend a period of service in the departmental press office; that the Chief Executive of the Central Office of Information should take the lead in improving standards, with training and guidance to regional press officers, tailoring regional press releases, having greater contact with the regional media and making more senior officials and Ministers available for interview on the local impact of policies; the Committee states that Government information should always be available and accessible to as many people as possible and that the Cabinet Office should collate annual statistics on the costs of Government Communications across departments.

Download or read book Ireland s 1916 Rising written by Mark McCarthy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of its upcoming centenary in 2016, the time seems ripe to ask: why, how and in what ways has memory of Ireland’s 1916 Rising persisted over the decades? In pursuing answers to these questions, which are not only of historical concern, but of contemporary political and cultural importance, this book breaks new ground by offering a wide-ranging exploration of the making and remembrance of the story of 1916 in modern times. It draws together the interlocking dimensions of history-making, commemoration and heritage to reveal the Rising’s undeniable influence upon modern Ireland’s evolution, both instantaneous and long-term. In addition to furnishing a history of the tumultuous events of Easter 1916, which rattled the British Empire’s foundations and enthused independence movements elsewhere, Ireland’s 1916 Rising mainly concentrates on illuminating the evolving relationship between the Irish past and present. In doing so, it unearths the far-reaching political impacts and deep-seated cultural legacies of the actions taken by the rebels, as evidenced by the most pivotal episodes in the Rising’s commemoration and the myriad varieties of heritage associated with its memory. This volume also presents a wider perspective on the ways in which conceptualisations of heritage, culture and identity in Westernised societies are shaped by continuities and changes in politics, society and economy. In a topical conclusion, the book examines the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to the Garden of Remembrance in 2011, and looks to the Rising’s 100th anniversary by identifying the common ground that can be found in pluralist and reconciliatory approaches to remembrance.

Book Clearing the Bull

Download or read book Clearing the Bull written by Jonathan Ledwidge and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis shows that the banking industry requires a transformation, as its business model and practices are no longer sustainable. Even so, such transformation cannot be made without Clearing the Bull—moving beyond old and tired orthodoxies in order to properly diagnose the problem. Drawing on more than twenty years of experience in banking, author Jonathan Ledwidge shows how the financial crisis exposed the industry’s poor system of values, leaving it mired in conflict with its human environment. Specifically, this includes how poor leadership, virtually unmanageable organizations, dysfunctional suppliers, infuriated customers, alienated employees, and dissatisfied communities all arise from the inability of banks to understand that values are more important than valuations. As a result there is now a total disconnect between banks and their human environment. That disconnect cannot be fully addressed by conventional solutions involving more regulations, more governance, and more controls. Banks have a very human problem, and thus by definition what they require is a human transformation. Clearing the Bull provides both a clear diagnosis as well as a detailed and comprehensive roadmap for the banking industry’s human transformation—and while doing so it remains totally engaging and accessible to bankers and non-bankers alike.
