The interplay between topological and geometric properties of Banach spaces and the properties of measures having values in Banach spaces is the unifying theme. The first chapter deals with countably additive vector measures finitely additive vector measures, the Orlicz-Pettis theorem and its relatives. Chapter II concentrates on measurable vector valued functions and the Bochner integral. Chapter III begins the study of the interplay among the Radon-Nikodym theorem for vector measures, operators on $L_1$ and topological properties of Banach spaces. A variety of applications is given in the next chapter. Chapter V deals with martingales of Bochner integrable functions and their relation to dentable subsets of Banach spaces. Chapter VI is devoted to a measure-theoretic study of weakly compact absolutely summing and nuclear operators on spaces of continuous functions. In Chapter VII a detailed study of the geometry of Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodym property is given. The next chapter deals with the use of Radon-Nikodym theorems in the study of tensor products of Banach spaces. The last chapter concludes the survey with a discussion of the Liapounoff convexity theorem and other geometric properties of the range of a vector measure. Accompanying each chapter is an extensive survey of the literature and open problems.

The text focuses first on the concrete setting of Lebesgue measure and the Lebesgue integral (which in turn is motivated by the more classical concepts of Jordan measure and the Riemann integral), before moving on to abstract measure and integration theory, including the standard convergence theorems, Fubini's theorem, and the Carathéodory extension theorem. In geometry, for in stance, we encounter the basic problems of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds and of minimal immersions; related questions appear in physics, for example in the classical theory of a-models. Non linear elasticity is another example in continuum mechanics, while Oseen-Frank theory of liquid crystals and Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity require to treat variational problems in order to model quite complicated phenomena. Typically one is interested in finding energy minimizing representatives in homology or homotopy classes of maps, minimizers with prescribed topological singularities, topological charges, stable deformations i. e. minimizers in classes of diffeomorphisms or extremal fields. In the last two or three decades there has been growing interest, knowledge, and understanding of the general theory for this kind of problems, often referred to as geometric variational problems. Due to the lack of a regularity theory in the non scalar case, in contrast to the scalar one - or in other words to the occurrence of singularities in vector valued minimizers, often related with concentration phenomena for the energy density - and because of the particular relevance of those singularities for the problem being considered the question of singling out a weak formulation, or completely understanding the significance of various weak formulations becames non trivial.

Unfortunately, Professor Kluvanek did not live to contribute to the project of writing up in a systematic form, the circle of ideas to which the present work is devoted. It is more than likely that with his input, the approach and areas of emphasis of the resulting exposition would have been quite different from what we have here. Nevertheless, the stamp of Kluvanek's thought and philosophy (but not necessarily his approval) abounds throughout this book. Although the title gives no indication, integration theory in vector spaces is a cen tral topic of this work. However, the various notions of integration developed here are intimately connected with a specific application-the representation of evolutions by func tional integrals. The representation of a perturbation to the heat semigroup in terms of Wiener measure is known as the Feynman-Kac formula, but the term has a wider meaning in the present work. Traditionally, such representations have been used to obtain analytic information about perturbations to free evolutions as an alternative to arguments with a more operator-theoretic flavour. No applications of this type are given here. It is an un derlying assumption of the presentation of this material that representations of the nature of the Feynman-Kac formula are worth obtaining, and in the process of obtaining them, we may be led to new, possibly fertile mathematical structures-a view largely motivated by the pervasive use of path integrals in quantum physics.
