Book Resurrecting Leather Stocking

Download or read book Resurrecting Leather Stocking written by Bill Christophersen and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the renowned author's complex portrayal of frontier America James Fenimore Cooper's Leather-Stocking tales—The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, The Prairie, The Pathfinder, and The Deerslayer (1823–1841)—romantically portray frontier America during the colonial and early republican eras. Bill Christophersen's Resurrecting Leather-Stocking: Pathfinding in Jacksonian America suggests they also highlight problems plaguing nineteenth-century America during the contentious decades following the Missouri Compromise, when Congress admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state. During the 1820s and 1830s, the nation was riven by sectional animosity, slavery, prejudice, populist politics, and finally economic collapse. Christophersen argues that Cooper used his fictions to imagine a path forward for the Republic. Cooper, he further suggests, brought back Leather-Stocking to test whether the common man, as empowered by Jackson's presidency, was capable of republican virtue—something the author considered key to renewing the nation.

Book Cooper s Leather Stocking Novels

Download or read book Cooper s Leather Stocking Novels written by Geoffrey Rans and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Fenimore Cooper's Leather-Stocking tales, published between 1823 and 1841, are generally regarded as America's first major works of fiction. Here, Geoffrey Rans provides not simply a new reading of the five novels that comprise the series but also a new way of reading them. Rans analyzes each of the five novels (The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, The Prairie, The Pathfinder, and The Deerslayer) in the order in which they were originally composed, an achronological sequence in terms of the stories they tell. As events in early written novels interact with those in later ones, the reader is compelled to construct political meanings different from Cooper's ideological preferences. This approach effectively precludes reading these works as Natty Bumppo's life story, or as an aspect of Cooper's. Rans presents the series as a text that faithfully reproduces the conflicts Cooper faced, both at the time when he wrote the novels and in the history that the novels contemplate. Cooper emerges as a composer of richly problematical texts for which no aesthetic resolution is possible and in which every idealization, political or poetic, is relentlessly subjected to the gaze of historical reality. The tension between potential and practice, which is apparent in the final two volumes of the tales, is present, Rans contends, from the inception of the series. Because the problems of racism and greed that Cooper addresses remained as unresolved for us as for him, Rans concludes that this reading of the Leather-Stocking tales reinforces both Cooper's central canonical position and his value as an articulator of political conflict. Book excerpt: The Prairie: A Tale (1827) is a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, the third novel written by him featuring Natty Bumppo. His fictitious frontier hero Bumppo is never called by his name, but is instead referred to as "the trapper" or "the old man." Chronologically The Prairie is the fifth and final installment of the Leatherstocking Tales, though it was published before The Pathfinder (1840) and The Deerslayer (1841). It depicts Natty in the final year of his life still proving helpful to people in distress on the American frontier. The book frequently references characters and events from the two books previously published in the Leatherstocking Tales as well as the two which Cooper wouldn't write for more than ten years. Continuity with The Last of the Mohicans is indicated by the appearance of the grandson of Duncan and Alice Heyward, as well as the noble Pawnee chief Hard Heart, whose name is English for the French nickname for the Delaware, le Coeur-dur.The story opens with Ishmael, his family, Ellen and Abiram slowly making their way across the virgin prairies of the Midwest looking for a homestead, just two years after the Louisiana Purchase, and during the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They meet the trapper (Natty Bumppo), who has left his home in New York state to find a place where he cannot hear the sound of people cutting down the forests. In the years between his other adventures and this novel, he tells us only that he has walked all the way to the Pacific Ocean and seen all the land between the coasts (a heroic feat, considering Lewis and Clark hadn't yet completed the same trek). That night, a band of Teton warriors steal all of Ishmael's animals, stranding the immigrants.

Book excerpt: In James Fenimore Cooper's timeless classic, The Last of the Mohicans, the rugged landscapes of 18th-century America set the stage for an epic tale of adventure, love, and honor. As the French and Indian War rages, the reader is thrust into a world where the clash of cultures echoes through the untamed wilderness. At the heart of the narrative is Hawkeye, a frontiersman of European descent adopted by the Mohican people, and his loyal companions Uncas and Chingachgook. When they encounter Cora and Alice Munro, two spirited sisters caught in the throes of war, a gripping story of survival unfolds. Against the backdrop of majestic landscapes and treacherous battles, the characters navigate a complex web of loyalties and betrayals. The Last of the Mohicans was an instant success in 1826 and has since its original publication become one of the quintessential American novels. JAMES FENIMORE COOPER [1789—1851] was an American author, renowned for his novels depicting America’s indigenous people. As a thirteen-year-old, Fenimore Cooper enrolled at Yale University but was expelled during his third year. His masterpiece, The Last of the Mohicans [1826], achieved instant success upon publication and was hailed as an example of The Great American Novel.
