Book The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters

Download or read book The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters written by Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters explores ways in which these women have been marginalized and recognizes how their contributions will positively influence the organization as it moves into its next 100 years. On February 14, 2020, the League of Women Voters of the United States celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. Although women of color have always made significant contributions to women's suffrage and the women's movements, their contributions, particularly as they relate to the League of Women Voters (LWV), have been marginalized and relegated to the footnotes of the organization's history. The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters adds a new dimension to these conversations. The book is structured to show the progression of the relationship between the League of Women Voters and its members of color as manifested in changes to its policies, practices, symbols, and messaging. It begins with the suffrage movement and continues until the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the League and uses actual correspondence, convention minutes, existing League histories, and personal accounts to tell the League story. Chapter titles disclose the philosophical shifts in attitude at each stage of the organization's evolution.

Book Sustaining the League of Women Voters in America

Download or read book Sustaining the League of Women Voters in America written by Maria Hoyt Cashin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout American history, our civic associations have been promoted as distinctive private-public bridges that enable democracy in the United States through citizen training, education and responsible advocacy. But Americans have increasingly withdrawn from such civic activity, and most associations that remain lack public accountability, local presence and active membership. In the absence of other engagement vehicles, a fundamental requirement for viable American democratic culture is lacking. To consider whether democracy and associations can still be positively linked, Cashin considers lessons drawn from the League of Women Voters. Worldwide, few associations have shown the durability, success or democratic impact of the League over its long history. Yet its numbers and span are gradually declining. Forecasting the League's uncertain future in contemporary America, Cashin suggests it may be time to give such civic associations a public boost. "Deftly combining contemporary political theory with empirical analysis, Cashin's work reminds us that good models of democratic association, such as the League of Women Voters, can reconnect our practices and our principles." - Emily Howden Hoechst, Adjunct Professor, Department of Government, Georgetown University "Cashin makes excellent use of both theory and practice to argue persuasively that civic associations are necessary if democracy is to thrive." - Thomas M. Kerch, Adjunct Professor, Department of Government and Graduate Liberal Studies Program, Georgetown University "This book offers a welcome story and needed message. Molly Cashin reminds us nonpartisan civic activism is still possible. Numbers count, but so do values, and the League is a sterling example." - Charles Yonkers, Adjunct Professor, Graduate Liberal Studies Program, Georgetown University

Book For the Public Record

Download or read book For the Public Record written by Barbara Stuhler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a judicious selection of documents from the papers of the League of Women Voters of the United States in the Library of Congress, Stuhler reveals the rich history of an organization designed to serve the public interest. In the aftermath of the 72-year long effort by American women to win the vote, the League was formed to prepare these new voters for their responsibilities as full participating citizens. The organization's first president, Maud Wood Park, and her associates established Citizenship Schools throughout the nation to educate women, and they were so successful that one newspaper complained, Why not for men, too? Succeeding presidents built the League's reputation as an organization inventive in its dual roles as a voter educator and civic activist. While League members were expected to be nonpartisan, they were also encouraged to be active in their parties, a sometimes confusing posture. Nevertheless, the League—as an advocate in support of specified public policies—succeeded in maintaining an informed nonpartisanship that came to be respected by opinion and political leaders, and the public learned that it could depend upon the League for unbiased information in election contests. In making it possible for women to show their strength and do what they have done for some 80 years, the League has made incalculable contributions to the public good. Students, scholars, and the informed public interested in American political and women's history will find this documentary collection invaluable.
