In our cosmopolitan life, since we are in close touch with all peoples and are constantly hearing about them, there is need at least of the simplest elementary facts in the history of the great nations. The French people have held such a central position in thefworld's affairs, and have contributed so much to civilization, that the young student should at an early stage possess himself of the outlines Of their history. He is then enabled to put together the past and present Of that interesting country and to view the one in the light of the other. Then, too, the fact that French is the first foreign language which American children are expected to study is another valid reason for placing before them in its most interesting form the main facts of French history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of France: From the Earliest Times to the Revolution of 1848 The following Outlines are founded entirely on the authority of the French writers who have recently applied themselves with so much earnestness to the investigation of their own national annals, and particularly that portion which relates to the period of the middle ages. In the general plan of this work, the author has conformed to that of the other Outline Histories of the series to which it appertains. The style he has endeavoured to make intelligible to young readers; and the necessary explanation of terms is comprised in the text. Book Vive la Revolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Steel
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0743208056
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Vive la Revolution written by Mark Steel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us, the French Revolution has been reduced to jokes about Marie-Antoinette, guillotines and the Scarlet Pimpernel. But for Mark Steel, bestselling author of REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL, the French Revolution was one of the most inspirational moments in human history - a moment when ordinary people changed the world and became extraordinary. It deserves better jokes than that. In this revolutionary new book, Steel banishes stuffiness from history, telling us what happened in France between the storming of the Bastille and the rise of Napoleon, bringing to life the people who made them happen. His account is dominated by bizarre events and splendid characters, from the famously odd Robespierre, Danton and Thomas Paine, to the less well known Drouet, the local postman who arrested the fleeing King because he recognised him as the man off of the money. VIVE LA REVOLUTION is an uproariously serious work of history - brilliantly funny and insightful, it puts the peculiarity of individual people back at the centre of the story.

Book A Concise History of France

Download or read book A Concise History of France written by Roger Price and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most up-to-date and comprehensive study of French history available ranging from the early middle ages to the present. Amongst its central themes are the relationships between state and society, the impact of war, competition for power, and the ways in which power has been used. Whilst taking full account of major figures such as Philip Augustus, Henri IV, Louis XIV, Napoleon and de Gaulle, it sets their activities within the broader context of changing economic and social structures and beliefs, and offers rich insights into the lives of ordinary men and women. This third edition has been substantially revised and includes a new chapter on contemporary France - a society and political system in crisis as a result of globalisation, rising unemployment, a failing educational system, growing social and racial tensions, corruption, the rise of the extreme right, and a widespread loss of confidence in political leaders.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short: History of Modern Europe From the French Revolution, to the Great War This Short volume has been designed to serve as an introduction to the study of recent European History. Stress is laid throughout upon the main currents of political development, in order that the story of Europe since 1789 may present itself as an intelligible and harmonious Whole. For this purpose _the chronological method of treatment has been to a certain extent abandoned, and no attempt has been made to trace the separate development of each state, events being viewed-except in the last chapter - from a European and not from a sectional standpoint. Nor does this book make any pre tensions to serve as a compendium of information. Much that has hitherto figured prominently in his torical textbooks is omitted; attention has been confined almost entirely to those facts which best illustrate the progress of the main factors in the history of Europe from the French Revolution to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914.
