Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that influence an educational administrators' leadership style. The study was conducted on educational administrators employed in the upper 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle serviced by the Region 16 Educational Service Center in the school year of 2010-2011. Moreover, this study examined what type of leadership style these educational administrators exhibit in the school setting. The study examined if there was a correlation between an educational administrators' leadership style and their previous teaching content area, their previous experience with leading an extracurricular activity and having previous experience with managing a budget. It has been determined that student achievement has been linked with educational administrator's leadership style. The closer educational leaders get to the core business of teaching and learning, the more likely they are to have a positive impact of students' outcome. Furthermore, there is little research on the factors contributing to an educational administrator exhibiting transformational leadership qualities. Principal recruitment is hindered by a growing shortage of qualified applicants in conjunction with a growing student population and the reality of the challenging demands, responsibilities, and complexities of the job. While the certification standards are regulated to some degree, entry into the field is self-selected. We need to engage in a selective procedure to choose highly qualified candidates.

Principals, as a school leaders, play a vital role in setting the direction for successful school. The administrator of a school must embody the traits that define transformational leadership behavior, from being creative and responsive, to becoming agents of change. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the leadership styles of the administrators in Holy Spirit Schools in the Philippines as perceived by the administrators themselves and techers. The researcher utilized the descriptive correlational study. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) of Bruce Avolio and Bernard Bass (2004) was administered. The subjects of the study include 10 school administrators and 320 teachers. The data were analyzed and interpreted using mean, standard deviation, product-moment coefficient of correlation and t-test. Finding indicate that principals tended to exhibit transformational leadership style but needed improvement in the transformational areas of Inspirational Motivation and Idealized Attributes and in the transactional areas of management-by-exception active.

A 45-questionnaire was administered to one principal in a public school setting and a classroom survey instrument was administered to nine teachers in his building. Significant findings based on literature in this project indicated a transformational leader was more inclined to support teachers and utilize different instructional modalities than a principal whose leadership style is transactional. The teacher survey collected data from teachers' perception about their administrator across different instructional domains. The researcher utilized statistical means to determine whether there was a difference in the mean scores of teachers who perceived their principal's leadership style as transformational as compared to those teachers who perceived their principal leadership style as transactional.

Book excerpt: It was not known to what extent, if any, a relationship exists between the leadership styles of primary and secondary school administrators and the retention rate of special education teachers in the southwestern United States. This correlational study investigated the relationship between primary and secondary public school administrator leadership styles and special education teacher retention rates in the southwestern United States. Using the Culturally Adapted Leadership for Inspired Business Excellence and Results (CALIBER) Leadership Assessment Scale, administrator leadership styles were measured and correlated with administrator self-reported special education teacher retention rates. The research questions that guided this study included, what administrative leadership style has the highest positive correlation with special education teacher retention in the southwestern United States and what relationship exists between the leadership styles of primary and secondary school administrators and the retention rate of special education teachers in the southwestern United States? Fifty-five individuals participated in the study. Data were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient to identify any statistically significant relationships between administrator leadership styles and special education teacher retention rates. The results indicated that there were no statistically significant relationships between administrator leadership styles and special education retention rates. It is recommended that further investigation into administrator variables be correlated to special education teacher retention rates.

These questions are fundamental to quantifying the productivity of the education sector. The studies in Productivity in Higher Education use rich and novel administrative data, modern econometric methods, and careful institutional analysis to explore productivity issues. The authors examine the returns to undergraduate education, differences in costs by major, the productivity of for-profit schools, the productivity of various types of faculty and of outcomes, the effects of online education on the higher education market, and the ways in which the productivity of different institutions responds to market forces. The analyses recognize five key challenges to assessing productivity in higher education: the potential for multiple student outcomes in terms of skills, earnings, invention, and employment; the fact that colleges and universities are “multiproduct” firms that conduct varied activities across many domains; the fact that students select which school to attend based in part on their aptitude; the difficulty of attributing outcomes to individual institutions when students attend more than one; and the possibility that some of the benefits of higher education may arise from the system as a whole rather than from a single institution. The findings and the approaches illustrated can facilitate decision-making processes in higher education.

Book excerpt: Industry, business, military and other government agencies are increasingly recognizing the significance of human factors in the productivity of complex organizations. Educational institutions are no exception to this fact. It is assumed that morale and productivity are related to the managerial style of the supervisor. Leaders are faced with the challenge of directing the work group toward the target of increased productivity while at the same time maximizing member satisfaction. The basic research problem of this study was to investigate the relationship between leadership style of high school principals (in terms of their Concern for Production and Concern for People) and certain dimensions of teacher morale. The null hypothesis which guided this study was that there was no significant relationship between teacher perceptions of administrative behavior and teacher morale. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 132 teachers from ten high schools in the state of Oregon. The results are based on 126 returns, 90 male and 36 female respondents. Principal Leadership Style Questionnaire was used to measure two dimensions (Concern for People and Concern for Production) of administrative behavior. Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was used to measure ten factors of teacher morale. All hypotheses were tested at .05 level of confidence. The first primary hypothesis asserting that there would be no partial correlation between administrative dimensions and Teacher Rapport with Principal was rejected. The second primary hypothesis that there would be no partial correlation between administrative dimensions and Satisfaction with Teaching was accepted. Partial correlation was 4ppliedto analyze the primary hypotheses by eliminating the effects of secondary hypotheses (Rapport Among Teachers, Teacher Salary, Teacher Load, Curriculum Issues, Teacher Status, Community Support of Education, School Facilities, Community Pressures, Age and Sex). T-test based on regression coefficients was applied to analyze the secondary hypotheses. Out of 20 secondary hypotheses tested, five of them were rejected. Analysis of the primary and secondary hypotheses concluded that Curriculum Issues, Rapport with Principal and Teacher Salary are positively related to both the dimensions of administrative behavior. Rapport Among Teachers was positively related to Concern for People but not Production. Satisfaction with Teaching, Teacher Load, Teacher Status, Community Support of Education, School Facilities and Services, Community Pressures, Age and Sex of the teachers are not related to the perceived leadership style of the principal. Teachers Satisfaction with Teaching is probably related mostly to those things that happen directly with pupils inside the classroom over which principals have little influence. Results of the two administrative dimensions indicated that a principal's leadership behavior is perceived by his faculty in various ways. However, on the average, administrators were rated high on both the "Production" and "People" dimensions of administrative behavior and perceived as having a "6,7" or "7,8" leadership style as described by Blake and Mouton (1964). Analysis of this research further suggest that educational administrators investigated in this study seem to have above average skills in the eyes of their faculty in promoting both goal achievement and member satisfaction. It is recommended that the design of this study be replicated on a larger teacher population and sample size in different geographical areas.
