Book The Lays of a Limb of the Law Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lays of a Limb of the Law Classic Reprint written by John Popplestone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lays of a Limb of the Law Mr. Popplestone's career might well be the despair of a biographer. Its uneventfulness was complete. He kept no diary; he corresponded with no public man; he wrote, indeed, few private letters, and burnt those he received; and, at least when I knew him, talked little of his past. Fortunately for our present purpose, it is sufficient to state that his history may be summed up in the line quoted above: he was an attorney. The world has been hard to attorneys. It has not been kind to our faults, and it has been more than a little blind to our virtues. It has persisted in underestimating our services to mankind, and in over-estimating our remuneration. This, perhaps, could be borne, "for sufferance is the badge of all our tribe," and there are consolations in the hardest lot. But this is not the worst. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Adventures of a Limb of the Law The law was originally designed for the furtherance of justice and the preservation of right, or, in other words, to [protect the innocent, and secure punishment to the guilty; but when instances daily occur of the very reverse of these principles prevailing, in the defeat of the honest man's claim, and in the rescinding of com tracts which parties entered into with their eyes open, either through the dexterity of counsel in discovering what is vulgarly termed a flaw, or from non-confon mity with some of those absurd Forms that have been handed down to us from time immemorial, and conse crated by use, an inference may fairly be drawn that the law has been perverted to uses for which it was never intended; and, instead of being a stafl' to the ia nocent and a terror to the guilty, it has thrown its shield around the dishonest and unprincipled portion of the community, for whose correction and punish ment it was intended. Book excerpt: font COLOR="#000000" FACE="MS Sans Serif" SIZE="1" ¡n we get some reality in here?ߡsks Judy Sheindlin, former supervising judge for Manhattan Family Court. For twenty–four years she has laid down the law as she understands it: ● If you want to eat, you have to work. ● If you have children, you'd better support them. If you break the law, you have to pay. If you tap the public purse, you'd better be accountable. Now she abandons all judicial restraint in a scathing critique of the system – filled with realistic hard–nosed alternatives to our bloated welfare bureaucracy and our soft–on–crime laws.
