Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laying of the Corner-Stone of the New Buildings of the Union Theological Seminary and the Inauguration of the Reverend Professor Francis Brown as President of the Faculty: November Seventeenth, 1908 By appointment of the Board of Directors, the Corner Stone of the new buildings of the Union Theological Seminary on Morningside Heights was laid on the afternoon of Tuesday, November seventeenth, 1908, at half after three o'clock. Through the courtesy of the authorities of the Teachers College, the procession formed in rooms provided in the Horace Mann School, at the northeast corner of Broadway and 120 th Street, and marched across the street to the site of the Entrance Tower, on the northwest corner, where a platform and tent had been erected for the accommodation of the invited guests. The order of the procession was as follows: 1. - The Students of the Seminary. 2. - The Student Choir, followed by Dr. Gerrit Smith, the Musical Director. 3. - The Faculty of the Seminary. 4. - The Directors of the Seminary. 5. - The representatives of other institutions. 6. - The officiating persons. On the arrival of the head of the procession at the site, the students formed a double file, through which the rest of the procession marched to the seats reserved for them upon the platform, where the other invited guests - not alumni of the Seminary - were already awaiting them. The alumni occupied a space reserved to the south of the platform. After the invited guests were seated the student body, with the choir, took their places to the east of the platform. Book excerpt: Broken Knowledge explores the impacts of the scientific and scholarly ideal of the modern university on theological education at Union Theological Seminary from 1887-1926. During this period, the marks of the modern university --specialization, the elective system, professionalization, and the empirical research orientation-- were incorporated into theological education. While vigorously implanting the new university's structural and functional patterns into theological education, the seminary and its theologians strove to bring theological discussions into the arena of secularized academia, to achieve independence from church dogmatism, to expand the scope of theological outlook in social domains, and to bind science and religion together. Without doubt, these efforts deserve due recognition. However, it is also undeniable that the current problems in theological education --the fragmentation of the theological curriculum and the loss of a holistic search for religious truth -- have to do with the seminary's adaptation to the new university ideal such as uncritical specialization and narrow modern epistemology at the turn of the century. This book explores how the decline of theology or the sacred in our modern world is connected with the dominance of modern scientific ways of knowing in our search for truth and the lack of holistic approaches to the issue of faith and knowledge. This book searches for the recovery of wholeness in theological education and higher learning in general.

Blight. The challenges they describe of embracing diversity while facing financial pressure and encouraging social change speak to seminaries, churches, denominations, and faithful individuals facing similar challenges today. The chapters model the kinds of interdisciplinary, interfaith, and inter-institutional conversations foundational to Shriver's approach to Christian public ethics. Shriver and Union Seminary addressed racial justice directly, and colleagues describe lessons learned from an activist-academic who was also a Southerner committed to reconciling and repairing the wounds of history. International conversation partners analyze the place of moral claims in successful social transformation, but those claims also had to be lived out in the seminary's institutional life. Gender justice, full inclusion, and liberation theologies became crucial to Union's identity, but not automatically.
