Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lawyer's Reference Manual of Law Books and Citations The preparation of this work was begun when the idea first suggested itself, but the occupations of a busy life have delayed its completion. In 1876 my father, Richard Soule (author of A Dictionary of English Synonymes and other books of reference), came to my assistance, and had nearly prepared the manuscript for the printer when his death occurred in 1877. His aid was so valuable that the book would have been published in his name if he had lived to carry it through the press. Book The Law of Marriage and Family Relations

Download or read book The Law of Marriage and Family Relations written by William Nevill Montgomerie Geary and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Marriage and Family Relations: A Manual of Practical Law This Law-Book is one of a series, intended as well for laymen as for the profession. For the use of legal Practitioners, all the usual authorities have been always cited, except where a recent judgment of a Court of Appeal reviews the previous decisions, and then it has been thought safe to omit a reference to the earlier cases. On substantive law directly in point, i.e., Marriage and Divorce, the author has endeavoured to make this Manual an exhaustive treatise; but where the matter discussed is not of direct interest, and is too wide for short treatment, e.g., marriage settlements, the author has summarised or quoted and cited the best text-books. Procedure, being outside the object of this series, is not treated at length; besides, procedure in the Divorce Court is exhaustively treated in the books on Divorce Practice by Mr. W. J. Dixon, and Messrs. Browne and L. D. Powles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Illustrated Treatise on the Law of Evidence Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Illustrated Treatise on the Law of Evidence Classic Reprint written by T. Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Treatise on the Law of Evidence To the trial lawyer no subject in the law curriculum is of more importance than Evidence. In this branch of the law questions arise very frequently, and usually they must be answered on the spur of the moment. It is essential, therefore, that the lawyer have at his tongue 's end the rules and their exceptions. Moreover, since the test of the keen lawyer is his ability to make fine legal discriminations, it is also essential that he possess a well disciplined mind in the art of applying them. In the present volume an attempt has been made to state point edly and systematically these various rules and exceptions; and since the law is an applied science, numerous illustrations have been given to elucidate their application. Every topic is fully illustrated; every illustration is founded upon an actual case, and for each case the citation is given. With the view of securing compactness, these illustrations, instead of being scat tered throughout the book, have been made a distinct part of it and placed after the text proper. This plan, it is believed, will meet with general approval. As an aid in developing ability to make fine legal discriminations the reader is earnestly advised to study carefully these illustrations and where practicable to do so to read the cases upon which they depend. Book Treatise on the Law of Evidence Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Treatise on the Law of Evidence Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Samuel March Phillipps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Law of Evidence, Vol. 1 This treatise, which has already passed through ten editions in England and been as often revised by its author, holds deservedly high rank as an elementary exposition of the Law of evidence; while the notes by Messrs. Cowen Hill, elaborate and comprehensive beyond any work of the kind, have given to these volumes the highest value and widest reception. The new form in which the present edition appears, demands from the editor a few words of explanation. The notes are printed in the same volume with, and (as far as practicable) immediately under the text to which they refer - a change in the mode of printing that will doubtless preve convenient, and greatly facilitate the labor bf comparing one part of the work with another. The notes, which contain frequent references from one to another, are numbered from the beginning of the first to the end of the third volume, and are printed without alteration; those added to the previous edition by Mr. Van Cott, retain the designation of stars by which they were distinguished from the others, and the citation of new authorities and statutes in this, are inclosed in parentheses. Keeping this in mind, the reader will readily place the responsibility of the successive annotations where it belongs. By a careful study of the notes, it will be seen that as a general rule, the division of either of them into separate parts cannot be made without breaking that fine chain of reasoning and discussion that runs through nearly all of them, making each a complete essay in itself. In a few cases the note embracing two subjects and appearing to be fairly divisible, has been divided, so as to bring each part under the appropriate head of the text; and here and there, where the author in his late revision has adopted into the text only part of such a note, the part so appropriated has not been reprinted in its original form. In frequent instances the original note, citing and commenting upon English authorities, has been wholly absorbed and embodied in the text, enriching that at the expense of the annotators; in these instances, of course, the note has not been reprinted, as such. Occasionally, the note, in its nature indivisible, has been only partly incorporated into the text, and has therefore, as a rule, been retained in full as written. In brief, the entire work has been reproduced with the design of preserving the notes intact, as far as practicable.
