Book Legislating Gender and Sexuality in Africa

Download or read book Legislating Gender and Sexuality in Africa written by Lydia Boyd and published by University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, a more formalized and forceful shift has emerged in the legislative realm when it comes to gender and sexual justice in Africa. This rigorous, timely volume brings together leading and rising scholars across disciplines to evaluate these ideological struggles and reconsider the modern history of human rights on the continent. Broad in geographic coverage and topical in scope, chapters investigate such subjects as marriage legislation in Mali, family violence experienced by West African refugees, sex education in Uganda, and statutes criminalizing homosexuality in Senegal. These case studies highlight the nuances and contradictions in the varied ways key actors make arguments for or against rights. They also explore how individual countries draft and implement laws that attempt to address the underlying problems. Legislating Gender and Sexuality in Africa details how legal efforts in the continent can often be moralizing enterprises, illuminating how these processes are closely tied to notions of ethics, personhood, and citizenship. The contributors provide new appraisals of recent events, with fresh arguments about the relationships between local and global fights for rights. This interdisciplinary approach will appeal to scholars in African studies, anthropology, history, and gender studies.

Book Singing the Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Leman
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2020-04-18
  • ISBN : 1789625203
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Singing the Law written by Peter Leman and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing the Law is about the legal lives and afterlives of oral cultures in East Africa, particularly as they appear within the pages of written literatures during the colonial and postcolonial periods. In examining these cultures, this book begins with an analysis of the cultural narratives of time and modernity that formed the foundations of British colonial law. Recognizing the contradictory nature of these narratives (i.e., both promoting and retreating from the Euro-centric ideal of temporal progress) enables us to make sense of the many representations of and experiments with non-linear, open-ended, and otherwise experimental temporalities that we find in works of East African literature that take colonial law as a subject or point of critique. Many of these works, furthermore, consciously appropriate orature as an expressive form with legal authority. This affords them the capacity to challenge the narrative foundations of colonial law and its postcolonial residues and offer alternative models of temporality and modernity that give rise, in turn, to alternative forms of legality. East Africa’s “oral jurisprudence” ultimately has implications not only for our understanding of law and literature in colonial and postcolonial contexts, but more broadly for our understanding of how the global south has shaped modern law as we know and experience it today.

Book Constitutional and Political History of Uganda From 1894 to Present

Download or read book Constitutional and Political History of Uganda From 1894 to Present written by W Kanyeihamba and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the study of Uganda's politics and history is to be raised to a higher level of intellectual excellence, the past has indeed to be studied; so must the present; and even the Future must be studied. But and it is a strong "But," all this must be done with a greater degree of level-headedness, with more honesty, and with greater objectivity. Justice George Kanyeihamba's book is a welcome effort toward that end. His treatment comprises a mix of critical analyses of a Past spanning the years from the beginning of the Declaration of the Uganda Protectorate in 1894 to the exit of Obote and the end of his Second Regime of the 1980-1985, up to the Present. The author is an expert and specialist in constitutional matters and a native of Uganda who has lived through some of the crises and upheavals he has written about here.

Book Land Use Law for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Land Use Law for Sustainable Development written by Nathalie J. Chalifour and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-20 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2007 book surveys the global experience to date in implementing land-use policies that move us further along the sustainable development continuum. The international community has long recognized the need to ensure ongoing and future development is conducted sustainably. While high-level commitments towards sustainable development such as those included in the Rio and Johannesburg Declarations are politically important, they are irrelevant if they are not translated into reality on the ground. This book includes chapters that discuss the challenges of implementing sustainable land-use policies in different regions of the world, revealing problems that are common to all jurisdictions and highlighting others that are unique to particular regions. It also includes chapters documenting new approaches to sustainable land use, such as reforms to property rights regimes and environmental laws. Other chapters offer comparisons of approaches in different jurisdictions that can present insights which might not be apparent from a single-jurisdiction analysis.
