Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Human Progress and Modern Reforms: A Lecture Delivered Before the Mercantile Library Association of the City of New-YorkThe laws of progress then, come under three gene ral heads: the nature of man; his condition, i. E., in the material world; and his social, including his politi cal relations. The first law of progress, therefore, is moral free dom. Call this man's birthright or not - say or deny that all men are born to be free, -one thing is certain, there cannot be one step in human progress without this condition. And it is only from what is inevitably left of freedom to the very serf and slave, that he makes any progress. More in fact is left, than we always consider, or than our current language always admits. Free will, free thought, may be in many ways injuriously checked; but it cannot be extinguished in any human being; if it were, it would be, not slavery, but death to him as a man. And as faras' any institu tion, any authority, any religion, any government crushes down this freedom, its stops the growth of men and communities.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Human Progress The Law of Human Progress? I. What is the Law of Human Progress? If the conclusions with which I have challenged the current political economy are correct, they will fall under a larger generalization. What is the law of human progress? This is a question which involves, directly or indirectly, some of the very highest problems with which the human mind can engage. But it is a question which naturally comes up. Are or are not the conclusions to which we have come consistent with the great law under which human development goes on? What is that law? We must find the answer to our question; for the current philosophy, though it clearly recognizes the existence of such a law, gives no more satisfactory account of it than the current political economy does of the persistence of want amid advancing wealth. Book A Multi Paradigmatic Approach to Understanding History

Download or read book A Multi Paradigmatic Approach to Understanding History written by Kavous Ardalan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the field of history through a multi-paradigmatic approach. For this purpose, it begins with a discussion of four most diverse worldviews or paradigms (namely, functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist, and radical structuralist), before moving on to consider four aspects of the field of history (historiography, grand narrative, progress, and time) from the viewpoints of the four most diverse worldviews or paradigms. Next, the book looks at three historical events (the French Revolution, the American Civil War, and the Iranian Revolution) from the viewpoints of the four most diverse worldviews or paradigms. It concludes by recommending paradigm diversity, as an understanding of different paradigms leads to a more comprehensive and a more balanced understanding of the multi-faceted nature of the subject matter.
