This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book presents a clear, highly readable view of science's best understanding of how things in the Universe came to be the way they are. Each chapter is written by a leading expert in that sub-field. Together they cover nearly all major advances made in the past century, in fields from cosmology to exobiology.'Joseph H Taylor Jr.Nobel Laureate in Physics, 1993'An exhilarating tour of the Universe from true experts. For those who thirst to know how we know what we know about our place in the Universe, reading this book will be a richly rewarding experience.'Adam G RiessNobel Laureate in Physics, 2011'These are fascinating essays about the nature of the world around us by people who write well and understand what they are writing about.'P James E PeeblesNobel Laureate in Physics, 2019The book provides a broad overview of what we currently know about the Origin and Evolution of the Universe. The goal is to be scientifically comprehensive but concise. We trace the origins from the Big Bang and cosmic expansion, to the formation of galaxies, heavy elements, stars and planets as abodes for life. This field has made stunning progress since the first edition of this book. At that time, there were no known planets outside of our own Solar System (compared with the many thousands currently being studied). The origin of massive black holes was pure speculation (compared with the very recent detection of the first gravitational waves from space, produced by the cataclysmic merger of two surprisingly large black holes). And the most important energy in the Universe, now known as the Dark Energy which is accelerating the expansion, had not been discovered. We aim to bring lay readers with an interest in science 'up to speed' on all of these key discoveries that are part of the panorama of cosmic evolution, which has ultimately lead to our existence on Earth.Related Link(s)

Book Journey of the Universe A New Perspective on Its Past Present and Future Evolution

Download or read book Journey of the Universe A New Perspective on Its Past Present and Future Evolution written by Robert J. Conover and published by Inperspective Publications. This book was released on 2021-06-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All sub-atomic particles, both simple and complex, were supposedly created within the first second of the Big Bang. That premise is without foundation, is rather incredulous, and leads to many thorny, unanswered questions. But what if we start the universe with a different premise -- that the first particles created were tiny elementary particles from which sub-atomic particles evolved? That premise gives the universe a more credible early evolution. It also answers many of those thorny questions, stipulates how cosmic evolution works, and glimpses how humankind might play a part in that evolution. You are invited to take the Journey and witness the universe from a new perspective. Feel its glory. Admire its simple complexity. Be in awe of its emergent qualities, and delighted by its creative accomplishments. Explore where we have been, where we are going, and how we are going to get there. You will find the Journey not only fascinating and awe inspiring, but it will leave you with a new understanding of why we are attracted to space, why we evolve, and why you exist. If you are ready for a new perspective, take the Journey.

Book Just Six Numbers

  • Author : Martin Rees
  • Publisher : Hachette UK
  • Release : 2008-08-04
  • ISBN : 0786723580
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Just Six Numbers written by Martin Rees and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2008-08-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a single "genesis event" create billions of galaxies, black holes, stars and planets? How did atoms assemble -- here on earth, and perhaps on other worlds -- into living beings intricate enough to ponder their origins? What fundamental laws govern our universe? This book describes new discoveries and offers remarkable insights into these fundamental questions. There are deep connections between stars and atoms, between the cosmos and the microworld. Just six numbers, imprinted in the "big bang," determine the essential features of our entire physical world. Moreover, cosmic evolution is astonishingly sensitive to the values of these numbers. If any one of them were "untuned," there could be no stars and no life. This realization offers a radically new perspective on our universe, our place in it, and the nature of physical laws.

Book Atoms of Silence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hubert Reeves
  • Publisher : Cambridge, Mass. : Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Release : 1984
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Atoms of Silence written by Hubert Reeves and published by Cambridge, Mass. : Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This book was released on 1984 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the grand tradition of popular exposition, astrophysicist Hubert Reeves explains current scientific understanding of the deepest mysteries of the universe in terms that will excite, stimulate, and educate the nonscientific reader. When it was first published in France in 1981, this book quickly became a best-seller and was avidly embraced by the popular press. The reviewer for L'Express, for example, wrote that "Reeves turns astrophysics into an epic saga, a metaphysical fresco, a story in the fullest sense of the word. [He can do this] because he forgets to be a professor. Facing the sky, his eternal home, he recounts the titanic struggle of primordial forces that, over the course of billions of years, formed the cosmos and all it contains...." The book falls into three broad sections. The first explores the implications of the discovery that the universe does indeed have a history - that the night sky that so excites our wonder is not static but has both a beginning and an end. The second uncovers the layers of evolution that comprise that history, from the cosmic phase in the first few moments of the universe when energy first transformed itself into matter, to the biological phase when matter transformed itself into life. The third goes behind the scenes of the universal drama to examine such basic concepts as time, energy, and chance. Reeves' style is metaphorical, determinedly naive, and even slightly anthropomorphic. Music becomes a metaphor for all of the orderliness in the universe that might just as easily have been cosmic "noise" if there had been no guiding principles at work. To understand those guiding principles, and to gain a fuller appreciation of the music that they produce, is' the goal of this enlightening and poetic book.

Book Origin and Evolution of the Universe

Download or read book Origin and Evolution of the Universe written by Royal Society of Canada and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1987 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the universe have the character it has because of design? In this collection of essays first presented at a symposium sponsored by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and the Royal Society of Canada, seventeen scientists and philosophers re-examine the "Argument by Design" in light of current scientific theories. Scientists in such diverse fields as cosmology, physics, geology, biology, and psychology provide syntheses of the state of their respective disciplines with regard to questions such as the origin or evolution of the universe and of life, the interaction of life and terrestrial environment, and verbal communication in prehumans. Contributions by philosophers cover such areas as arguments for a designer and the question of whether nature's laws and initial conditions could be viewed as "fine tuned" for the production of life. Many of the chapters demonstrate the awe-inspiring success of modern science in explaining the universe in terms of fairly straightforward natural laws, countering those versions of the design argument which try to find evidence of God's activities in the supposed failures of scientific laws to cover various phenomena.

Book Evolution of Matter and Energy on a Cosmic and Planetary Scale

Download or read book Evolution of Matter and Energy on a Cosmic and Planetary Scale written by M. Taube and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My intention in this book is to describe in simple language, using a minimum of mathematics but a maximum of numerical values, the most important developments of science dealing with matter and energy on cosmic and global scales. In the conventional literature all of these findings are distributed among books and journals on physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, biology, energy, engineering, and the environmental sciences. The main purpose here is to attempt to give a unified description of Nature from the elementary particles to the Universe as a whole. This is used as a basis for analysing the future development of mankind. The future evolution of the Universe, galaxies, stars, and planets gives some hope for the destiny of mankind. The problem of matter and energy flow on the Earth appears soluble even for the distant future. There seems to be no reason why a long period of human development on this planet should not be possible. The book has been prepared based on my lectures at the Warsaw University from 1959 to 1968 and during the 15 years 1969-1983 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule) in Zurich and at the University of Zurich. I wish to give my sincere thanks to the Swiss Federal Institute for Reactor Research at Wurenlingen for their constant support. I am especially grateful to Mrs. Christine Stratton for setting up the English text and to Mr. R.W. Stratton and LG. McKinley for their helpful criticisms and remarks.
