By the same token many a recent grain elevator and power house arrest the imagina tion by their essential fitness, by their appearance of being stripped for action, and their technical requirements often add a picturesqueness of mass that is quite beautiful. Brooklyn Bridge through its beauty of line and feeling of fitness gives, as does the Parthenon, by these means a sense of repose and inevitableness. Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Download or read book The New City written by Ludwig Hilberseimer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New City: Principles of Planning All human settlements depend, in their growth and in their decline, on social, spiritual, political, and economic forces. These forces are influenced by the status of technics, by the forms of production and consumption, and by the means of transportation available to the settlement builders. This interdependence of social and technological forces is expressed in all kinds of culture and varies only with the variations of the predominant elements. We can see that this is true as we study cities of the past. They are unlike cities of today, but they show that, as each new order comes into existence, changes in urban development become both possible and necessary. This process is clear wherever we find settlements of men. Students have tended to limit research to large settlements. Book The Place of the Beautiful in the City Plan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Place of the Beautiful in the City Plan Classic Reprint written by John Nolen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of the Beautiful in the City Plan What is the test of Beauty? In an address on this subject before the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Harvard University delivered a year ago, Ralph Adams Cram said, Bring up to the Courts of Beauty any one of the things that offend us today, no matter what this may be, and abide by the verdict rendered. For the sake of impersonality let it be a modern city, anything, from Somerville to Chicago, and what has beauty to say in the premises? Before beauty's austere regard the bold pleading of business efficiency, of plausible economic law, of material progress, of a mechan istic philosophy of evolution - of Modernism, in a word falls thin and unconvincing. Dead cities rise up before us in vision, cities now marred and degraded yet beautiful still in their delicate vestiges: Venice and Palermo, Le Puy and Carcassonne, Rothenburg and Prague, Bruges and Hildesheim, Oxford and Winchester - and with them beauty calls on us to match Leeds and Birmingham and Essen and Pittsburgh and St. Louis, or as a matter of fact any other city in either hemisphere created or dominated by indus trial civilization. Is the change worth the price, is the criticism lightly to be cast aside as sentimental or efl'emi mate? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
