Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: May 18, 1905 In common with all books, the Book of Mormon has its spirit, produces its effects upon the minds of men; and as it claims to.be a work originally written and also translated through the inspiration of God, and deals primar ily with sacred things, it is to be expected that the spirit of this book will have not only a good, but even a divine influence; that it will be of a faith promoting, doubt-dispersing, comfort-bringing character. Its effect upon the minds of men, therefore, may be another test of its claims to a divine origin and to that test I now submit it. In his work entitled, My First Mission, the late President George Q. Cannon makes the following statement respecting the influence exerted over his spirit by reading the Book of Mormon under the trying conditions in which he was placed while serving as a missionary in the Hawaiian Islands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: December 18, 1913 The following illustration will serve to show the unreason ableness of the idea: Suppose that a king of unbounded sympathy and unlimited resources formed in one part of his dominion a great society for the alleviation of distress which existed among his subj ects. Imagine him, without either breaking up the society, or indicating that the work is not to be continued, removing the greater number of its members into another district of his empire, where distress is even more widespread than ih the locality where they had hitherto been stationed. What should we say if it were told us that the great society does nothing in the way of relief, except in the smaller of the areas of suffering? Why weaken the good work by taking away so many of the members from a place where they are so badly wanted, and placing them in a spot where although there is plenty of scone, they must not labor for the cause! And yet that is the light in which the mission of the Church of Christ is regarded by many. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: February 18, 1926 The Church, thoroughly reprobate, created offices at pleasure and laid claim to secular authority, notwithstanding our Lord's avowal to Pilate, My kingdom is not of this world. While still boasting its divine origin as founded by Jesus Christ, who refused earthly kingship, the Church lifted itself above all kings and rulers, and arrogated to itself supremacy in the affairs of nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: September 18, 1924 The spirit of Elias is to prepare the way for a greater revelation of God, which is the Priesthood of Elias, or the Priesthood that Aaron was ordained unto. And when God sends a man into the world to prepare for a greater work, holding the keys of the power of Elias, it 'a.s called the doctrine of Elias, even from the early ages of the world. John's mission was limited to preaching and baptizing; but what he did was legal; and when Jesus Christ came to any of John's disciples, He baptized them with fire and the Holy Ghost. 've find the apostles endowed with greater power than John their office was more under the spirit and power of Elijah than Elias. In the case of Phillip when he went down to Samaria, when he was under the spirit of Elias, he baptized both men and women. When Peter and John heard of it, they went down and laid hands upon them and they received the Holy Ghost. This shows the distinction beween the two powers. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: February 6, 1913 A new work entitled, The Restoration of the Gospel, by Prof. Osborne J. P. Widtsoe, a.m., Principal of the Latter-day Saints' High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, has but recently issued from the Deseret News press. It was passed upon by a committee under appointment from the First Presidency, and therefore comes to the public strongly recommended. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is at most a story of the Restoration. It presumes at the outset that some thing has been restored. It relates how this something was restored. Every missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has met these two questions when he has preached abroad the Gospel of the restorati011: -what was restored? How was it restored? These two questions the follow ing chapters attempt to answer in part. It is but fair and just to say that he has handled the subject admirably. Many strong and convincing facts are skilfully woven together in chronological order, and prove beyond successful contradiction the need of a Restoration. While this is the particular and Special theme of the work, much valuable information is Contained in the chapters entitled, Sacred Writings of Old, A Sacred Book of To-day, The Gospel Brotherhood, A New and Everlasting Covenant, The Vision of Glories, In the Mouths of Witnesses, The Test of Section Sixty-seven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 97: April 18, 1935 This being Easter season, a time celebrated throughout all Christendom, commemorative of the resurrection of our Lord, I desire, if I may be aided by His Spirit, to set forth the Views of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on this important subject - the Resurrection. In contrast to the general teachings of the world, we accept Without qualification or apology the literal, tangible resurrection of Jesus Christ. If this were a case at court, witnesses would be called to give evidence, so I desire to call up a number of witnesses to testify to the resurrection of Jesus. Our first witnesses will be Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James. If these witnesses were placed on the stand and asked to tell what they know about this case, they would no doubt testify as follows.
