Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: June 21, 1934 I am sure that I am putting it conservatively when I say that with the modern improvements and inventions we need work only three hours a day. I am sure that the average man can ao complish more in three hours than his grandfather accomplished in eight or ten, because of the conditions that have come. Why not do this little service for material things, the bread we eat and the clothes we wear, and then devote a major portion of our time in caring for this Spirit child of God That is the real living, vital energy in the bodily tabernacles which we behold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: January 11, 1934 It is obvious that these changed conditions should have little, if any, effect upon the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its members have always stood for temper ance, they still stand for temperance, and should unitedly use their influence for the enactment of rational laws which will hold the liquor traffic in proper restraint, that we may never return to the golden age of the bootlegger, or the intolerable conditions which preceded him. Without reserve we endorse the attitude of the President of the United States when he says: To take the life of a person without due process of law is murder. It has always been, and still continues to be a fundamental doctrine of the Church that: The murderer has not eternal life abiding in him. Notwithstanding the vexatious delays of the law, the 11n certainty of the verdict to be pronounced by judge or jury, by which violators of the law who are obviously guilty are too frequently acquitted and turned loose 011 the community, to again kill, kidnap, or rob, we admonish members of the Church to refrain from participation in acts of lawlessness, and to advise others to refrain from all association with mobs. At the same time, of course, since we are a Church, and since we believe that the ultimate end of our existence is a life here which shall bring us eternal life hereafter, we must not forget that which belongs more strictly to the spirit. We must bend these cultural things and bring them to bear upon our lives in such way that day by day and hour by hour we shall live better, truer, holier lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: July 5, 1934 The reformer in morals, in education, in religion, in sociology, in invention, in philosophy, in any line of aspiration, is ever a pioneer. His privilege is to blaze the path for others, to mark at his peril a road that others may follow in safety. He must not expect that the way will be guided and asphalted for him. He must realize that he must face injustice, ingratitude, opposition, misunderstanding, the cruel criticism of contemporaries and often, hardest of all, the wondering reproach of those who love him best. He must not expect the tortoise to sympathize with the flight of the eagle. A great purpose is ever an isolation. Should a soldier leading the forlorn hope complain that the army is not abreast of him The glorious opportunity before him should so inspire him, so absorb him, that he will care naught for the army except to know that if he lead as he should, and do that which the crisis demands, the army must follow. The reformer must realize without a trace of bitterness that the busy world cares little for his struggles, it cares only to joy in his final triumph; it will share his feasts but not his fasts. Christ was alone in Gethsemane, but - at the sermon in the wilderness, where food was provided, the attendance was four thousand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: May 17, 1934 Now, Nephi in his account of this extraordinary journey tells us that the travellers suffered much affliction, hunger, thirst, as well as fatigue. He notes specially that they had to eat raw meat, not being permitted to make much fire. The Lord would make the food palatable, and He would also be their light Nephi 17: 2, 12, The obvious inference is that Lehi and his company were travelling through a hostile country, avoiding the common trade routes, and not betraying their whereabouts, not even by smoke from camp fires. Fire for sacrifices they probably had, accord ing to the Mosaic law, but not fire for their own comfort. It is this detail of the Book of Mormon account of the sufferings of the colony of Lehi across the Arabian peninsula, that receives a new illustration in the report of the French explorers concerning the hostility of the Arabs, even now. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: April 26, 1934 The world needs a great religious trust which will unite the churches into a single body of faith, to precede and prepare the way for the greater religious trust, predicted in Holy Writ the millennium. We can ever be loyal to our own belief, faithful to our own cause, without condemning those who give their fidelity in ao cord with their own conscience or desires. The great reformers of the world, men who are honestly and earnestly seeking to solve the great social problems and to provide means for meeting human sin and wrong, agreeing perfectly in their estimate of the gravity and awfulness of the situation, often propose diametric ally opposite methods. They are regarding the subject from different points of view, and it would be intolerance for us, who are looking on, to condemn the men on either side merely because we cannot accept their verdict as our own. On the great national questions brought before statesmen for their decision, men equally able, equally sincere, just and nu selfish, differ in their remedies. One, as a surgeon, suggests cutting away the offending matter, the use of the knife - this typifies the sword, or war. Another, as a doctor, urges medicine that will absorb and cure - this is the prescription of the diplomat. The third suggests waiting for developments, leaving the case with time and nature - this is the conservative. But all three classes agree as to the evil and the need of meeting it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: March 1, 1934 God's intent is to surround His children upon earth with the possibilities of joy. And joy can be won in only one way - the joy of which the prophet Lehi speaks, through the definite principle of eternal progress. There can be no joy for a person who stands still to him, that which seems joy is merely a make belief, the shell, not the kernel. It is but the savory smell, not the feast itself. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: December 13, 1934 I have been asked hundreds. If not thousands of times, what difference there is between the belief of the Latter-day Saints and that of most of the Christian denominations as to the ulti mate salvation of the peoples of this world. I have answered briefly that the Latter-day Saints teach that salvation is for all people - of all ages, of all races, of all colours - all people who can be saved. The revelation to Joseph Smith is that salvation is to come to all, and that none will be lost who can possibly be redeemed - that the plan of salvation is as broad as the fall of man. Our first parents broke a divine command, and through their disobedience death came into the world - while on the other hand, through the atonement and obedience of Christ, life and salva tion will ultimately come to all the family of Adam. As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive. WE also testify that in the nineteenth century our Heavenly Father was pleased to open the heavens once more and send His Son, Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, with a divine message, conforming in every respect to the teachings of this same Christ while in mortality. We know that angels have been sent from the Father declaring truths that would assure salvation for all who receive and obey them. I recognize that the ordinary person hesitates a long time before he considers it worth while to consider such a declaration. And he can never become con vinced until, through faith and prayer, a testimony from an unerring source is received by him. We declare that angels have come down from heaven, bringing light and truth for the salvation of all the human family, and a message to be pro claimed to every nation, kindred, tongue and people. How well this obligation on our part has been carried forward God knows est. The greatest religious teacher among men was Jesus, the Nazarene. III His personality God was made manifest in the flesh. He revealed Deity to humanity. He showed that God was in reality the Father of the spirits of men. He proclaimed that He was in the beginning with God - that He came forth from God, and would return to God and that all mankind were His brethren, made in the image of God, and part of His eternal family. This presents God as actually and literally Our Father which art in heaven. It takes away the mystery with which false faiths have enveloped the Supreme Being - beclouding the minds of men and making God utterly incomprehensible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: May 31, 1934 In the few minutes which I have at my disposal I want to address my remarks primarily to those who are wandering away in the domain of error, those few sheep who seem to be getting away from the flock, so nearly beyond recall that they -may become lost. It is to them I want to say a few words. There are a few truths to which I wish to refer, but first let me say, let us not put ourselves in the attitude of challenging truth. How poor and weak are we, how ineffective are we, how limited in our knowledge are we, that we should ever presume to challenge truth. But truth, 011 the other hand, mighty and eternal in its nature, challenges positively, day by day and hour by hour, every one of us to live in accordance therewith.
