Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: December, 1931 But that was not the order. The Saviour evidently knew that His time had come, when He was to be delivered into the hands of His enemies, when He was to be scourged and spat upon, when He was to pass through a mock trial, and finally endure death upon the cross. He came to do the will of His Father, and He knew that that was His Father's will. When in the garden of Gethsemane, carrying the weight of the sins of the whole world, and His anguish of soul was such that He sweat great drops of blood, His prayer was Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: December 17, 1931 In order to Show you the greatness of this modern Prophet, let me give you a summary of the work which he accomplished after he was about twenty years of age. You know he was martyred in 1844. It is hardly conceivable what that man did, and unless we put the facts together and pause for reflection we will hardly realize it. Well here it is: Before the Prophet was twenty-five years of age he had seen the Father and the Son had held eight conversations with the Prophet Moroni; had received the Aaronic Priesthood from John the Baptist, and the Melchi zedek Priesthood from Peter, James and John. He had trans lated the Book of Mormon by the power of God, and had it printed and circulated among the people of the nation. He had organized the Church of Christ by instruction from heaven; had received a number of revelations from God, and then four teen years afterward had seen Elijah who committed unto him the keys of turning the hearts of the children to the fathers; received a visit from Moses, who committed unto him the keys of the gathering; held communion with Elias, who committed unto him the dispensation of the Gospel of Abraham; had built two temples, one in Kirtland and one in Nauvoo. In the former he received the personal ministrations of Jesus. The latter temple was not completed before he was murdered. He received nearly two hundred revelations from God. He completed an entire edition of the Old and New Testament; he translated the Book of Abraham from rolls of papyrus Written by Abraham himself while he was in Egypt, which came from the catacombs of Egypt. He had had revealed to him the visions and writings Of Moses, contained in the Pearl of Great Price, and which con tained a minute account of the rebellion in heaven and of the creation. He had mastered the Greek and Hebrew and other languages, although an illiterate boy when he first received heavenly messengers. I testify to you, brethren and sisters, in all solemnity that I do know that Jesus is the Christ, the Saviour of the world, and that I do know that Joseph Smith was a true Prophet of God, a mighty minister of righteousness, who held the keys Of the kingdom of heaven, and now stands at the head of this great and last dispensation. I bear this testimony in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. - Address delivered at the Grant Stake M. I. A. Convention, held in the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday, November 14th, 1926. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: August 31, 1922 The Latter-day Saints hold pronounced views relative to these questions which I have had the temerity to pro pound for discussion. The people who embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as is taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, believe firmly that there are, within the philosophies revealed to them, the solutions for these questions and problems and the rules of action by which men may be guided to forestall occurrences of this kind in the future, and to insure the peace of the world and the stability of righteous and lawful institutions. In the first place, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes in and advocates a God, a Father in heaven. Its concep tion. Of that Father in heaven is such as to induce a complete confidence and trust in his providence, his mercy, his kindness and his good-will toward all men who are his children and all men are, in the conception of the Church, his children. That conception of God is conducive to a supreme faith which makes every Latter-day Saint say, in his heart, that God is over all; that he will protect that the destiny of human beings, of nations and worlds, lies in his hands; that he, in his kindness and providence, will give to men that which they should have for their welfare and progression in this world, in preparation for the eternal life which is to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: Thursday, August 27, 1931 Should see the dance pavilion at Saltair, which is primarily a resort for innocent diversions. The dance hall is built on piles, and when I walked its length there must have been hundreds Of couples on the floor. The vast majority were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, better known as the Mormons, and I was reminded of many big nights at Belle Vue Gardens, Manchester, or a holiday occasion on the pier at Southend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: November 12, 1931 The last Article of Faith is as follows: We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous and in doing good to all men indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul, we believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. This small group of sisters had knitted fifty pairs of socks for the men at the front. In spite of the unsettled condition of the country during this time, the interest in the Relief Society work was well maintained. The 1918 report shows there were forty-six societies in thirteen districts, with a total enrollment of 766 members. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: January 15, 1931 We cannot ignore the fact that this particular Christmas season is not a time of unalloyed contentment and happiness; for notwithstanding the granaries of the nations are full, their storehouses stocked to repletion, the balance of demand and distribution is deranged, so that want and plenty exist side by side. The clouds of business depression are still thick and lower in g, and this means lack of individual employment and consequent deprivation to the wage earner. Though much has been done by benevolent institutions and through personal efforts of many who are giving unto the Lord by ministering to His children, there are too many homes in which the specter of want is ghastly visible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: October 29, 1931 I rejoice in the fact that from many sections of the country we have received reports that our people, as a rule, who have been honest and conscientious in the mission field in the payment of their tithes, almost without exception are retaining their employ ment and are getting along all right financially. I do not know that the subject is worthy of my notice, and yet it has been suggested that it might be well to refer to the continued falsifying by some people who have been excommunicated from the Church and are going around distributing papers and docu ments and publishing papers that are as full of lies as an egg is full of meat. I believe that the very best liars I have any ao quaintance with are those who have been cut off from the Church and cast out. They seem to be very active at the present time, making statements that our property is being mortgaged, etc., notwithstanding the fact that there is no Church property mortgaged. Any person could go down to the county court house in any of the counties and find out if the Church's property is mortgaged. There is no part of the property of any one of the wards or stakes in our Church, or of the general Church property, that is mortgaged.
