Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: February 24, 1927 However, after all such adjustments had been made, the bat tery was still unsatisfactory. Its operation was weak, irregular, uncertain, and wholly unsuited to the electrolysis required by the work in progress. At length, having become convinced that the fault was a radical one, that some defect was present which no ordinary patching-up process would remedy, the man of science took the battery apart and subjected each cell to an indi vidual examination. One after another passed the test and proved itself to be in measurably perfect condition, until eight had been thus disposed of; the ninth was seriously at fault. That cell was set aside, and the remaining three were tested; all of these were good. Plainly, then, the inefficiency of the battery was chargeable to that one unit, number nine; and this one had been among the worst of the abnormally active cells. The eleven good units were connected up; and from the battery thus assem bled there issued a current fairly adequate for the work in hand. At the lirst opportunity of convenience the man gave closer attention to the rejected unit. There was little difficulty in determining the true cause of the trouble. The cell was in a state of short-circuit; it had short-circuited itself. Through its unnatural intensity of action, -as a result of its foaming and fuming, the acid had destroyed the insulation of some parts; and the current that should have been sent forth for service was wholly used up in destructive corrosion within the jar. The cell had transgressed the law of right action - fit had corrupted itself. In its defective state it was not only worthless as a working unit, an unproductive member in the community of cells, but was worse than worthless in that it interposed an effective resistance in the operation of the other clean and serviceable units. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: March 24, 1927 On another occasion, probably about two years later, after the fame of Jesus had spread throughout the land, He said to the apostles Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. They crossed the Sea of Galilee, near its northern end, and sought seclusion outside the city of Bethsaida. However, a multitude traveled afoot around the end of the lake, or sea, and Jesus preached to them. So interested and impressed were the people that they remained until near nightfall. They were hungry and the only food found in the company consisted of five barley loaves and two small fishes, which a boy had taken with him to the spot. Some of the disciples suggested to Jesus that He dismiss the multitude and send them to their homes to which He replied: They need not depart; give ye them to eat. (matt. As Jesus directed, the-people seated themselves in groups of fifties and hundreds, numbering about five thousand men beside women and children. Taking the loaves and little fishes Jesus pronounced a blessing upon the food, and then divided it and told the disciples to distribute to the multitude. The material of both bread and fish increased under the Master's hand, so that the entire multitude ate until all were satisfied, and the fragments that remained far exceeded the original amount, for we read that twelve baskets were filled with the surplus. Yet again did the Lord provide a meal in the desert, on which occasion 'four thousand men, beside women and children, were abundantly fed. He blessed and brake the seven loaves and a few little fishes, which constituted all the food at hand; and again the substance was increased to meet the need. In this instance also there was an excess, sufficient to fill seven baskets. (matt. In the change of water into wine at Cana, the water forming the great bulk was present; the feeding of the multitudes there was a great increase in substance. It is evident that Jesus pos sessed and exercised the power of organizing the elements, creat ing in the one case wine, and in the others the actual substance of bread and fish. Science has never accomplished such wonders; no purely human power could have wrought them. The Man who brought them about was in truth divine. The Book of Mormon itself, I have no doubt, within the next few years will be corroborated by all manner of discoveries. Men are digging in the earth; things are found that we did not dream of a few years ago. A man voiced the opinion a few days ago - a visiting Englishman - that every new discovery in Americanarchaeology tends to confirm the truth of the Book of Mormon. We shall use such finds and discoveries for the establishment in the hearts of seekers after truth of the correct ness of the Book of Mormon. Yet within the book itself there lies in the history it tells, in the doctrines it sets forth and in the pictures that it paints, the most convincing evidence of its truth. I have always felt that the best approach to the Gospel of Jesus Christ is through the study of the internal evidences, found within the Doctrine and Covenants and the Book of Mormon.
