Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: December 29, 1927 One of the most beautiful pictures given in all literature is the picture of those parents going out to meet enemies who came against them with swords; and they sacrificed their lives rather than uncover the swords that they had buried and given their word not to unearth. One thousand of those parents suffered death rather than violate their covenant. Meeting no resistance, the enemy being conscience-stricken stopped the massacre after a thousand men had proved that they preferred death to the violation Of a trust. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: March 3, 1927 Character is inseparably connected with personage; in the sense here spoken of, one cannot conceive of character existing in and of itself. The devil is a personage - a living spirit-being of unembodied status; and his dupes, both the unembodied and those in the flesh, for he has converts walking the earth, are no less separate entities and personal beings than he himself. This tenet is fundamental in the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - day Saints. There is a popular dogma of current belief to the effect that Satan is but a fictitious conception, a mere phantasy of the imaginative mind. Perusal of such press items as the one from which the following excerpt was taken will confirm this state ment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: December 15, 1927 In my reading of the Book of Mormon I am always reminded that the witness of the truth of this work - restored through the instrumentality of the Prophet Joseph S111ith - lies'within the work itself. One does not have to go into external places for proof, silice within the-work itself, within its doctrines and organization, lies the most convincing witness of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; as restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon itself, I have no doubt, within the next few years will be corroborated by all manner of discoveries. Men are digging in the earth; things are found that we did not dream of a few years ago. A man voiced the opinion a few days ago - a visiting Englishman - that every new discovery in Americanarchaeology tends to confirm the truth of the Book of Mormon. We shall use such finds and discoveries for the establishment in the hearts of seekers after truth of the correct ness of the Book of Mormon. Yet within the book itself there lies in the history it tells, in the doctrines it sets forth and in the pictures that it paints, the most convincing evidence of its truth. I have always felt that the best approach to the Gospel of Jesus Christ is through the study of the internal evidences, found within the Doctrine and Covenants and the Book of Mormon. If they die without that opportunity in this life, it will reach them in. The world of spirits and there be declared to them, and if they are willing to accept, it is counted unto them just the same as if they had embraced the Gospel in mortality. In this way justice is meted out to every man, and all are placed 011 an equality before the bar of God. The modern world knew nothing of this doctrine until the Lord made it known to Joseph Smith, and yet it is taught in the Bible in a manner that proves that it was well understood in ancient times. There are passages in the Old Testament that touch 011 this doctrine, but these passages speak of the practice of the doctrine as being in the future, or after the coming of Christ. In fact, there was no work done for the dead until after Christ was crucified and went to the spirit-world and there prepared the way by declaring good tidings to the spirits in prison. After His resurrection He introduced the vicarious work for the dead, and it was practised in the Primitive Christian Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: September 29, 1927 Peter positively avows that Christ went and preached unto the spirits in prison. Read this in connection with the context, 1 Peter 3: 18-20. The same Apostle refers further to Jesus as He who Shall judge the quick and the dead; and adds: For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the Spirit. See 1 Peter 4: 6. Contrary to the sectarian dogmas, based solely on the theories Of men, by which the minds Of mankind were darkened during the long night Of the great apostasy, opportunity for repentance and for consequent progression is provided for beyond the grave. The essential conditions for salvation or admission into the king. Dom of God are the same in the realm of the disembodied as here among mortals. Without faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Sincere repentance of sin, the reception of baptism by imm'ersion under the authority Of the Holy Priesthood, and the bestowal of the Holy Ghost, or the right to the ministry of the Holy Ghost, by the laying on Of hands, no soul can be saved in the kingdom of God. Disembodied Spirits, when brought to the realization Of the sins they have committed in the flesh, may comprehend the dire effects of their evil lives, and may develop faith, and actually repent. For these the material ordinances Of baptism by im mersion in water, and the laying on of hands for the bestowal of the Holy Ghost can be administered through the proxy of their descendants who accept the Gospel for themselves here on earth. The glorious work being carried on in the Temples Of the Lord in the current age is One Of the present and saving results of our Lord's ministry in paradise, during the interval between His death on the cross and His emergence from the sepulchre. The spirits of those who have lived and died as mortals retain their intelligence, and also their free agency, except as they have bound themselves to the service of Satan; and even from this dire condition there is possibility and hope of release if they will comply with the conditions Of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as it is now being preached amongst the innumerable hosts Of the departed, and as the requisite ordinances requiring administra tion 'here on earth are solemnized in the House Of the Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: December 22, 1927 In the concluding address President Talmage dwelt upon the salvation of mankind and expounded trenchant scriptures per taining thereto. He showed that salvation is relative, and that graded conditions await the souls of men beyond the grave. The existence of the many'mansions affirmed by our Lord 011 the night of the betrayal was cited in evidence, as were the three states Or glories referred to by Paul as comparable to the sun, the moon and the stars, respectively. The anc1ent Apostle named two 'of the three in descending order as the celestial and the terrestrial glories; the third was described without name, and illustrated by the varying lustre of the stars. The speaker then showed that by revelation through the Prophet Joseph Smith in the current age the third state or kingdom is designated the telestial, next above which is the terrestrial, and yet higher is the exaltation pertaining to the celestial state. Every man will find his place according to what he really is. A missionary meeting was held on the Saturday evemng pre ceding the conference. Separate meetings of Mutual Improve 'ment Association officers, of the Relief Society, and of members holding the Priesthood were held between regular sessions 011 Sunday. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: June 30, 1927 Even the Apostles had not entirely rid themselves of the tradi tions of their fathers. One effect of the Transfiguration was to impress upon the three that Christ was superior to the law and the prophets, there was Moses in person typifying the law, and there was Elijah who was esteemed as one of the prophets; and both of them were ministering unto Jesus, while the voice of the Eternal Father, directed to the Apostles especially, acknowledged Jesus as His Beloved Son, and commanded them to hear Him! They were no longer to be bound wholly by the ancient law, for that law was superseded by the ministry of Christ, They were to hear Him!
