Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: December 25, 1924 The closing month of the year naturally suggests to a Latter day Saint that the time is at hand for a final settlement of the year's tithing. According to the revealed law of God, this means that of our earnings for the year we should return to the Lord one-tenth for the building up of Zion and the advancement of His kingdom in the earth. It is not wise to leave the payment of the year's tithing until the end of the year, for it will often be found impossible to pay a full tithing at that time. Payment should be made from time to time as means are forthcoming. This renders it much easier to comply with the law and enables us to do it in a spirit more acceptable to the Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: December 4, 1924 But great must have been this editor's surprise, for the day after the baptismal service was held, dozens of newspapers throughout the kingdom carried write-ups of the ceremony, and afew even carried pictures of the ordinance being performed. Far from being a secret service, this baptism in Bradford, as with every other baptism held in the Church, was open to any who wished to attend, provided that the solemnity of the occasion was respected. Among the one hundred fifty or more spectators who witnessed the ceremony were several representatives of the Press and other interested persons, not members of the Church. That now my beloved parents are gone, they have passed out of my life forever and that I will never see them again, that would deprive me of aone of the greatest joys that I have in life, the contemplation of meeting them again, and receiving their welcome and their affection and of thanking them from the depths of a grateful heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: January 24, 1924 I stood not long ago in the presence of a man who said, Well, we must have a God, but who knows what kind of God He is? In all probability He is a great force, perhaps the force of forces, intangible, everywhere present, in every tree and plant, in every animal, in every man, but nowhere collected into personal form; just a great universal intelligence or power or force which we recognize always. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: February 21, 1924 For be it known that Mormonism rests upon the testimony that God gives to His children of its truthfulness. If you will do the work you shall know whether these men speak of God or whether they speak of themselves. In humility and with all the earnestness of my soul I bear testi 11101) y that I know that the Angel Moroni came and revealed the Book of Mormon, that Joseph Smith was the instrument in the hands of God of establishing upon the earth God's Church, through which His Gospel may be preached to the world and I bear witness of its truthfulness in the name of Jesus Christ. But the explanation given by the Lord is the important point for us to consider Jesus answered, neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. The Lord's purposes were worked out in the case, for the man was healed, and the instance stands as a testimony for or against those who have become acquainted with the circumstance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: March 6, 1924 Joseph Smith did not, out of superior wisdom which he had, or because of his great learning, nor his deeper insight into the scriptures, excell the men of his generation or the generations that preceded him, in magnifying and in glorifying the mission and the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was qualified by heaven to accomplish the great work of setting before the world once again a true conception of the Father and of His Son, and of the Gospel which the Son introduced in the meridian of time. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: May 1, 1924 And thou hast made us that we could write but little, because of the awkwardness of our hands. And when I had said this, the Lord spake unto me, saying: Fools mock, but they shall mourn and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness. This has been exemplified many times in the history of the Church. Where differences of Opinion exist, whether it be in regard to temporal affairs or whether it be in regard to spiritual affairs, or faith in God, by which we hope to attain to eternal life in His presence, there must be some basic law to which we can refer and from which there can be no further appeal, which is the end of controversy; otherwise, I may assert and you may deny, and controversy would never cease. As it applies to our civil affairs, the temporalities and their control, that tribunal is the civil law, the law which we ourselves have made. As it applies to God and His purposes, the law is His written and spoken word. From it there can be no just appeal. So in civil affairs we honor and respect and uphold the civil law, and in things which pertain to the word of the Lord, we adhere to His written word, as it is contained here in the Bible and in the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon has been before the world now for nearly one hundred years. No one has ever pointed out an error in principle that is in it. Men may ridicule, they may scoff, but that does not constitute argument, nor evidence. They are the last arguments to which the vanquished always resort - ridicule, abuse, misre presentation and I suppose they will be applied to us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: July 17, 1924 I have no fear for schism and division of this Church, over the questions on doctrine that are arising in other churches, or whether modernism or fundamentalism shall ever be a question among us - fundamental things in this Church have clearly been established from the beginning. And we have. Continuous revela tion that will settle all such questions. We are founded upon the truth, that God lives, areal Being, our Father, that Jesus Christ is His Son, the Only Begotten in the flesh, the Firstborn in the Spirit, the literal Son of God, and the only Savior of mankind. I know it as well as I know that I live; you know it; and we are to tell the world of it and try to win the world for Christ. Oh, that we could tell all men! Oh, that these amplifiers could carry to-day the message to the ears of all flesh, that God has spoken, and in an age of the world's dire peril He has extended His helping hand to save them, and if they will but repent and receive the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, they shall find salvation here and hereafter. May that message be carried forward and reach all flesh, and blessing and honor shall be upon every man and every woman who thus contributes to this noble world cause. May it eventually prevail, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: April 3, 1924 It would seem from the quotation made by the angel to Joseph that the earth would be wasted at the coming of our Lord, if we do not do this important work, if the hearts of the children be not, in this dispensation, turned unto their fathers; which, interpreted by the Prophet Joseph means: if we do not consider our dead ancestors, those who have gone be fore, obtaining sufficient know ledge and genealogy concerning them that will enable us to go into the temples, builded for that purpose, and there perform this important work of baptism. Not only is it necessary that our dead who have not had the Opportunity in life of hearing and embracing the Gospel shall have the opportunity of hearing it on the other side and shall have the privilege of baptism by proxy by their living friends, but it is necessary that every ordinance of the Gospel that is necessary for the salvation of the living shall also be administered by proxy for the dead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: October 30, 1924 In his opening address, President Grant greeted the Saints and expressed joy at again meeting with them in general conference. He called attention to the radio set and said it had been esti mated that one million persons could hear the proceedings of this general conference, providing they listened in. He spoke of the wonder of the radio and said he rejoices in all great blessings. President Grant read from a revelation given through the Prophet Joseph Smith to the prophet's father, wherein it was said that a marvelous work and a wonder was about to be brought forth, admonishing the people to seek the Lord. This, said President Grant, he wished to impress upon the conference gathering. If there is any one special message, he said, that he desired to give the Church in conference assembled, it is Seek the Lord and serve Him with all your might, mind and strength. President Grant referred to a trip he made soon after the last general conference to various mission fields in the United States and Canada. He said he is pleased to report that the work is progressing, that the Elders and the lady missionaries are working faithfully and diligently. He said he played a game of golf near Kansas City on land once owned by General Doniphan, the courageous friend who once saved the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith by the stand he took against mob law.
