At first I was inclined to treat the matter lightly, not crediting our man with a thorough under standing of the matter; but the more we questioned him and the more clearly we discerned his bitter antipathy toward the Jews, the more convinced I became that we were going to witness that day a most significant demonstration. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 30, 1923 Many people have asked how it is that Mormonism so func tions; how it is able to work in such a fashion ia behalf of humanity; because I might take anything else, any other activity, sound and good and designed for the welfare of the human race, and show practically the same conditions that apply to the course and the cause of ed u *ation. One man will declare that the reason why these things are so in Mormonism is merely because by some accidental condition, great men have arisen in Mormon dom. Joseph Smith was a tremendously great character; every student, whether of our people or not, will admit the greatness of the man. And so, those who do not understand us will say we had a great man to found our Church and that explains how we are able to show a condition so favorable. Another will say that Brigham Young was such a great man. And so, as I read recently in a book not long since published, all Mormonism may be explained because of the great men that Mormonism has had. Another book declares that the reason why this test of truth, this test of fitness to human conditions, measures up as well as it does, is because Mormonism has been placed under very difficult conditions. It had to light its way in Missouri. It had to fight its way out here in the desert. It has been opposed by men, and as a consequence it has been able, through Opposition, to develop into the great institution that it is to-day. Any such explanation, my brethren and sisters, is insufficient to those of us who have understood the spirit of the remarks that have been made at this conference. There are in this Church great fundamental principles, and reflected from those princi ples are great fundamental practices. The possession of these principles, the use of these practices, lie at the foundation of any explanation of the vitality and the strength and the fitness of Mormonism to serve the human race and that is my testimony to you, as I understand this great Gospel of Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: April 19, 1923 Finally, having fought night and day to the point of exhaustion, realizing they were losing the fight, for, as they fought at one point the black pests would swarm over the field at another point, so in their extremity they appointed a day for fasting and prayer, and then, kneeling in the fields they implored Divine Providence to intervene, in some way they knew not how, to save their crops. And we believe that it was in answer to those fervent prayers that there suddenly appeared another great army, not black this time, but a marvelous cloud of white-winged seagulls coming from the islands in the lake to the westward. This army circled overhead and then suddenly, with shrill crys swooped down upon the fields. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: January 18, 1923 The contention of the members of this Church is that the Gospel in its fulness and power has been restored to the earth and the fundamental principles of Christianity, many of which have been forgotten or rejected by the world, have again been restored for men's salvation. Mormonism seeks to round out and perfect a fragmentary Christianity. It seeks to bring into accord and union all Christian peoples and to prepare the world for the second advent of Jesus Christ. There have been some who have been unwilling to con cede to the members of this Church the appellation of Christians. Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 85 written by David O. McKay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: June 14, 1923 Iain from all eternity. I have existed before all ages. You consider in me only the person who speaks to you, and who has appeared to you within a particular time. But besides this human nature, which ye think ye know, there is in me a divine and eternal nature. Both, united, subsist together in my person. Abraham knew how to distinguish them. He adored me as his God, and desired me as his Savior. He has seen me in my eternity, and he predicted my coming into the world. To these comments Dr. Clarke adds some of his own on verse 59, as follows: It appears that the Jews understood him (jesus) as asserting his Godhead, and, supposing him to be a blasphemer, they pro ceeded to stone him according to the law (lev. 24: For another text in which Jesus asserted his divinity, read John 10: 31, where these words are written: I and my Father are one. It is observed by the reader that the word my which occurs in this passage is printed in italics, which call attention to the fact that it was supplied by the translators and was not in the original. Now, omitting that word, the essence of the Lord's claim is that he and the Eternal Father, or God over all, are one. Jesus did not mean that in his human nature, with its limitations and frailties, he was one with the Father, but that in his spiritual nature and attributes he is God, like the Father, without begin ing of days nor end of years. There are many Christians of these times who hold that the claim which Jesus thus made must refer to a unity of sentiments and purpose - to a complete consecration of his powers his whole life - to the work with which he had been charged by the Father. That Jesus did con secrate his all to the accomplishment of his appointed work is openly manifest from the Gospel records; and that he was one with the Father in a far higher sense - in one vitally essential to the cause of human redemption from sin and its effects - is a proposition sustained by several circumstances connected with this case. This sense is one that holds him as uncontaminated by sin, and free from its power and curse, being therefore more than a mere mortal, however perfecta mortal may be, for all such creatures have sinned and come short of the glory of God (rom. 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: March 29, 1923 No one need take the writer's word on this point. Read the history of the Mormon people from beginning to end, and you will find that no trials could daunt them, no dangers could make them afraid. Driven from their homes in one place, they at once set about building new ones in other places, and when they faced the perils of a march of a thousand miles through trackless desert, they danced and sang their way through to a sage-brush wilder ness which they speedily made to blossom like the rose. It was their religion which sustained them in all their trying ordeals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 Disaster has come to many members of the Church, he said. Because they failed to heed the counsel to stay out of debt. Some have lost their homes by reason of debt, and have been obliged to move to other climes; and this in some instances has resulted and might yet result in their drifting away from the Church. He said he can find no financial adviser who is willing to predict safety beyond the very near future, and to-day is as good a time as ever to heed the ad vice. It occurs to him that one debt the Latter-day Saints owe is their debt to the Lord, and he admonished the saints to be prompt and fair in the payment of their tithes in the season thereof. The next Speaker called was President Charles A. Callis of the Southern States mission. It is good to live to-day, he said. There have always been those who garnish the sepulchres of the dead prophets, the speaker pointed out, but he believes that if a man is disloyal to the Church leaders to-day he would have been disloyal to the Prophet Joseph Smith if a man is disloyal to the government of the United States to-day he would have been disloyal to George Washington and the other patriots of his day. He told of a conversation he had had with a learned man who said that if the world had been told ten years ago that the great world war was coming it would have laughed the informer to scorn and then would have crucified him. Elder Callis said he told the man that in effect the world did crucify such a man, for the Prophet Joseph Smith foretold the great Civil war and died a martyr to his convictions. It is the call of Latter-day Saints to cry repentance to the world and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of whom Latter-day Saints are not ashamed.
