Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 2, 1922 To-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise, the world of spirits. What is this world of spirits? Where is it? It is an intermedi ate state between this life and the resurrection int-o eternal glory. To the righteous it is a place of rest, a Paradise, indeed; to the unrighteous it is a purgatory 011 hell, where they are punished and corrected and taught and made ready for the resurrection. Jesus went there and the thief went there. But Jesus went to teach and the thief went to be taught. The latter could not be exalted into heavenly glory until he was prepared for it. Better to repent at the eleventh hour than not at all, but heaven is not gained at a single bound. That was Joseph Smith's doctrine. It was the doctrine-of the Saviour. They say we are not Christians. Why, we are nothing if we are not Christians. We believe in Christ more than any church on earth. Joseph Smith had a vision in which he saw the human race and their eternal destiny. He saw the many mansions that the Saviour referred to. He saw the celestial, terrestrial, and telestial kingdoms, and kingdoms that were not kingdoms of glory. It was shown to him that the glorified planets, the stars, are God's kingdoms. They all have a law given unto them, and whichever glory we attain to we must obey the law pertaining to that glory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 30, 1922 The speaker then referred to the new and everlasting covenant and said that it was a contract between God and his people. Boys and girls who attend the schools and universities of the country should not think there is anything in the Gospel which would prevent them from accepting and developing a truth, for all truth is included in it. What is needed is an interpretation of the Gospel, and that interpretation should come through the institutions and auxiliaries of the Church, that the young may know there is nothing about it which would prevent them from developing all truth. He closed by bearing his testimony to the divinity of the latter-day work. Elder James E. Talmage was the next speaker. He said at times it is well for one to look at himself, but when he does so he should be careful of the mirror which he chooses for that purpose. So with the Church. It is well at times to become introspective. The speaker then referred to the early apostolic days of the Church. He showed how the Gospel spread until Paul said all had heard it. Then followed a period of apostasy. Pagan rites and ceremonies were introduced and a period of darkness resulted. Then came men who groped toward the light and attempted to bring about a reformation. At last, the speaker said, God again spoke from the heavens. God, the Father, and Jesus Christ the Son appeared again upon the earth. This Church has no mother church. It has sprung from no other; it was founded by Jesus Christ himself. Peter, James and John, the presidency of the Church in the days of old, have restored the authority of that Church. The Church has been re-established in these the latter days. While this may shock the ears of some, it should not. The Church of England declared many years before the coming forth of this Church in 1830 that there was a great apostasy in the world. Elder Talmage then read from Section 22 of the Doctrine and Covenants regarding the new and everlasting covenant, and from the New Testament in which it is called unwise to put new wine into old bottles or new cloth upon old garments. That was to show that there was to be no compromise between the things of God and the things of men. The Lord is not leaving his Church without guidance, but is speaking through those who represent him upon the earth. Elder Talmage closed by urging his hearers to follow the counsel of the leaders of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 16, 1922 President Penrose said he had been blessed with acquaintance with several of the heads of this Church, and he declared all were men of God. He said he enjoyed the confidence of President Grant and was glad that he was able to pray for him and help him in any way possible. The speaker said he had his certificate of ordination as an elder in this Church with him. According to that, he said, he was ordained to that office in the Priesthood on January 6th, 1851. Soon after that he started to preach the Gospel without purse or script and did so for ten years. He was told in those early days that a man was fortunate in being able to wear out in the service of the Lord. He said his eyesight had failed, but was glad he had been able to wear it out for the Lord. In regard to the liberties of the Latter-day Saints, President Penrose said he had never been forced nor coerced to do a single thing he did not want to do. He declared that everything he had done had been done voluntarily, and that all his remaining days are at the Lord's service. The speaker said he was glad to be able to attend conference once more and partake of the spirit thereof. He then referred to the rewards which await those who are faithful, and closed by bearing his testimony to the truth of the Gospel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 23, 1922 Elder Widtsoe then stated that a child should be trained spiritually as well as intellectually. Education in itself does not insure one against a life of crime, he stated. Often that training only makes a man with a criminal mind more dangerous. The speaker said the child should be trained spiritually, and that the schools are not to blame for not giving this, for they are prohibited from doing in. A man trained only intellectually is but partly trained. Elder Widtsoe then proceeded to show why the Church schools should be patronized in training the young for honorable, upright lives. He closed by bearing his testimony to the power of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Presiding Patriarch Hyrum G. Smith was the next speaker. He began by saying the Latter-day Saints are a record-keeping people. He then told how hard it formerly was for one to obtain all the records necessary, and showed the difficulties experienced by those who kept or sought such records in those days. He expressed his thanks to the Lord that methods and means have been devised by which these records may be kept and obtained much more easily than formerly. He expressed his thanks also for the improvements in transportation, which enabled one to travel more expeditiously than was possible a few years ago. He thanked God for the weather which enabled so many to attend the conference. Elder Smith called attention to the fact that all blessings are predicated upon law; that obedience to law is necessary if the blessings are to be obtained. The speaker urged those present to show their appreciation of the blessings which have been bestowed upon them, and prayed that all might be true and faithful in all things. Following Elder Smith's discourse the solo Eye hath not seen was sung by Mrs. Pearl Kimball Davis. Elder Melvin J. Ballard was the next speaker. He said he was extremely grateful that his life had been ordained among the Latter-day Saints. He declared there has been no time in the history of the world when he had rather been on the earth than at present. He said he recognized the tremendous responsibility which rests upon the Latter-day Saints and the end which is destined for them. The only way by which the world may be saved is through the plan of salvation as given by God the Eternal Father. The Latter-day Saints are not a freakish nor a fanatic people, Elder Ballard declared, unless observing the Word of Wisdom is freakish and being different from the rest of the world is being fanatic. If that is so, the speaker said, he was glad that they are fanatic and freakish. It is necessary that this people should be materially strong for the accomplishment of the Lord's purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: August 24, 1922 As I sat alone the following Sunday afternoon, my folks having gone to meeting, I began to reflect on my condition. I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: October 26, 1922 John the Revelator saw the restoration in the latter days of the everlasting Gospel. His great vision of the flying angel did not refer to the preaching of the Gospel in the days of the Saviour and the ancient twelve, for when John saw the vision nearly one hundred years had passed since Christ was born. It referred, as the Saviour told John in the beginning, to things that shall be hereafter. The Gospel was to be preached to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, showing that every nation, kindred, tongue and people would be without it, but would hear it by means of its restoration in the latter days, when all the dispensa tions of the past will be united and will flow into this one, as the rills and rivers flow into the ocean. All the past dispensations point down to this time, and find their fulfillment herein. Adam's dispensation has its fruition in this age of the world; Enoch's, Noah's, Abraham's, Moses', all these dispensations must be bound together and become one in this the Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. That is the message that the world has nicknamed Mormonism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 19, 1922 It is hurtful to conceive of religion as a negative thing, state, condition; on the contrary, it is impressively positive, requiring action, and the results of this life are not to be summed up in terms of what we have not done, what we have refrained from doing, only, but in terms of what we have tried to do, and in the measure of the effort we have put forth to accomplish something for good, which is the same thing as saying something for God. Mere immersion in water, and the laying on of hands, would not be, could not be, an ordinance recognizable and acceptable beyond the grave, were it not that these ordinances are prescribed and required; and, therefore, when administered to the prepared and receptive candidate, by the authority given of God, they become effective as means toward salvation and are indispensable to salvation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: June 22, 1922 The services began with the congregation and choir singing the hymn O ye mountains high, after which the choir sang an anthem. President Penrose, in announcing Elder Roberts as the speaker, in formed the congregation that he had lately been called to preside over the Eastern States mission and expected to leave within a very short time. Elder Roberts said it is truly a pleasure to meet with the saints in the Tabernacle. He declared he was grateful for the appoint ment he had received, but said he was fearful that his friends may be disappointed in what he would be able to accomplish. It is with a most humble spirit, he said, that he undertakes this work.
