Hansen, one of the two missionaries recently mobbed while holding an Open-air meeting in that historic town. The Plymouth paper, by way of introduction, says: Since it is the policy of the Herald to give both Sides, we have consented to publish a denial of Miss Agnes Lister's story of her experience among the Mormons, ' written by Mr. H. D. Hansen, a missionary now in Plymouth. And then follows Elder Hansen's denial: It is by no means improbable that the name Agnes C. Lister is as fictitious as the story. I was born and raised in Utah, have traveled extensively throughout the Western States, and I testify that the accusations against the Mormon Church are vicious, inconsistent, and maliciously false. The root of prejudice against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arises from the claim we set forth in the official name. The Church has been opposed from its infancy, not only because of plural marriage. The greatest persecution was endured before polygamy was practiced. The Prophet Joseph Smith was murdered in cold blood by a mob led by a Protestant minister because he bore a testimony similar to the Apostle Paul that he seen God. Because of upholding this testimony, sealed with his blood, we are slandered, misrepresented, and persecuted in some sections of the country. He said his mind went back ten years to the 6th day of April, 1912, when he was sustained as Presiding Patriarch of the Church. He was not present at that time, and the members of the Church sustained a man whom they did not know. Elder Smith said he had been blessed during his ministry. There have been many changes in the Church in that time. The Church has grown and blessings have come to the Latter-day Saints through living the laws of God. The honest in heart are being brought out of the world by the missionaries and are uniting with the Latter-day Saints. The missions are fast developing into the nature of stakes. This work has been organized in the earth, never to be taken away or given to another people. The speaker admonished the Latter-day Saints to obey God's laws, as all blessings are predicated upon obedience to law. In order to obey law one must learn the law. Elder Smith prayed God that the Latter-day Saints would be able to carry the message of the Gospel to the world. He closed by invoking the blessings of the Lord upon all the members of the Church. The next speaker was Elder Seymour B. Young, President of the First Council of Seventies. He told of having visited the present city of Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1905, and called at the Mansion House in which the Prophet Joseph Smith once lived. While there he slept in that house and the next morning was allowed to enter the room in which the bodies of Joseph and Hyrum were placed after their martyrdom. On the floor are still to be seen stains of blood which flowed from the Prophet's veins and those of his brother. His great vision of the flying angel did not refer to the preaching of the Gospel in the days of the Saviour and the ancient twelve, for when John saw the vision nearly one hundred years had passed since Christ was born. It referred, as the Saviour told John in the beginning, to things that shall be hereafter. The Gospel was to be preached to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, showing that every nation, kindred, tongue and people would be without it, but would hear it by means of its restoration in the latter days, when all the dispensa tions of the past will be united and will flow into this one, as the rills and rivers flow into the ocean. All the past dispensations point down to this time, and find their fulfillment herein. Adam's dispensation has its fruition in this age of the world; Enoch's, Noah's, Abraham's, Moses', all these dispensations must be bound together and become one in this the Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work.
