I wanted at least to say this much to you, that we ought not to spend our means in importing into our country things we can raise at home; and surely not those things that are injurious, nauseating and hurtful to life. We ought to let them alone. I do not believe that it is really necessary for the Latter-day Saints to import tea and coffee into Utah. I believe they could make shift with something more simple. Something less injurious, perhaps, than these things that are more or less stimulating and not nourishing. The effects of which are more injurious than beneficial. Do we pray as we should? Do we remember the Lord in our prayers? Here, in the Book of Mormon, one of the ancient prophets declares we should pray morning and noon and night. He says we should pray in our fields. We should pray for our flocks, for our herds. We should pray in our labors, and wherever we are we should cultivate and enjoy the Spirit of supplication, of humility, and of acknowledgment that the Lord is good, that the Lord is merciful, that He is supreme, that He is our Father, and that he has provided for our comfort and well-being in the world more than we could ever do for ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 80: January 17, 1918 Rasputin was a man who, from a very humble origin, rose to a position of influence and authority. Members of the Russian nobility Were among his disciples, and royalty paid homage to him. So secure did he feel in the power he wielded, through his exalted patrons, that, when he had shot down an assailant, in a fashionable drawing-room, he calmly ordered the dismissal from the service of the police officer who dared to arrest him, and later, he said to the Czar, as reported, Only fancy. The fellow attacked me! Such idiots must be suppressed. He was a revolutionist who might have attacked thee, 0 friend! Nor did Rasputin under estimate the influence he wielded, if the report is correct accord ing to which the empress, who was present at the interview, said, I agree, holy father. You did well. The people must be held in check by us. This Russian monk was, finally, done away with, and it seems that men in high positions were implicated in the tragedy that ended in his death. We do not know a great deal about Rasputin's teachings, but Countess von Schaumburg has been quoted as authority for the statement that the following paragraph contains a summary of his theology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 80: October 24, 1918 The Savior reproved the pious unbelievers of His generation for garnishing the sepulchres of the dead prophets and rejecting the living ones, as their fathers had done before them. A professed reverence for Moses and the old-time servants of God was a prom incut characteristic of those who spurned the greatest of all prophets, the very Son of God, concerning whom Moses and others had testified. And this same spirit, the spirit that crucified the Christ. Brought about in the Nineteenth Century the martyrdom of the Prophet, Seer, and Revelator, Joseph Smith. I want to read to you one of his predictions, of interest to us all, from the fact that it constitutes the reason why Mormonism came into the world. That reason was, in brief, that Israel might be gathered, that Zion might be brought forth, and the way prepared for the coming of the Lord in His glory. This revelation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 80: March 14, 1918 We may decline to enter actively into any charitable or good work because it would take up too much of our time, or entail upon us too much trouble or in some measure interfere with our established habits, and convenience. Here, too, we find and gain our lives. We may neglect the duties and calls of the Sabbath-day by keeping it just as if it were an ordinary week-day, instead of obeying the divine law to keep it holy, because we do not care to sacrifice our selfish predilections. We may excuse our attend ance at Sabbath-day services on many pretexts, such, for instance, as feeling a bit tired, or finding the weather not quite propitious, or because some domestic duties have to be performed, or it may be that, owing to late rising we have not allowed ourselves sufficient time to get through all that we have to do.
