Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: July 27, 1916 If a man has been discontented, wicked and miserable, because of an ungodly earthly career, that feeling will continue with him in the spirit world. If, on the other hand, a person has been loving, virtuous and God-fearing, while on earth, he will continue to possess these desirable characteristics. All knowledge gained on earth, will be retained by the spirit in the world of spirits. The prophet Joseph informs us that, In the world of spirits, no man can be exalted but by knowledge. There will naturally be every grade, or degree, of righteousness and wickedness, of intelligence and ignorance, in the vast world of spirits. From the words of the prophet Alma, we learn that they are divided into two general divisions and places, the righteous enjoying the blessings of Paradise, and the wicked reaping the result of their evil deeds, being bound by their sins and ignorance of the things of God, in outer darkness (alma 40: 7 In this outer darkness, the wicked will have to suffer the agonies of a pricked and guilty conscience - a condition that will be like unto hell-fire, until he has paid the penalty for every sin committed. These are the qualifications requisite to Latter-day Saints, and to becoming Latter-day Saints, members in good standing in the Church of Jesus Christ, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. God bless you and all the household of faith, and help us to be true and faithful to the end, realizing that the battle is not to the strong, nor the race to the swift, but to him that endures to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: August 17, 1916 The people of the world at the present time are all for pleasure, and seem to think about nothing except this world's goods. If you will open your Bible at I. John 2: 15, you will find these words, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. My mind is not set upon this world's goods. I am trying to do as Jesus Christ taught, namely, to lay up treasures for myself in heaven, where moth and rust cannot creep in, and where thieves cannot break through and steal. The world are laying up treasures on earth, where rust can corrupt, and thieves break through and steal. Christ says (matt. 16: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? The gospel of Christ, as taught by the Latter-day Saints, is indeed a Pearl of Great Price. It brings true happiness and con tentment. Paul says (i. Tim. 6; 6 But godliness with content ment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. We are told again (matt. 6: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you. In order to do this, we must do as Christ says (john 5: Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me, then we shall find that we must repent of our sins, with a godly sorrow, not with the sorrow of the world, which, as Paul says (ii. Cor. 7: worketh death. Christ has provided a way in which we can get remission of our sins. Peter (acts 2: 38) commands the people to be baptized for the remission of their sins. Again, we find that Paul was commanded to be baptized to wash away his sins (acts 22: After baptism, we receive the Com forter, which is the Holy Ghost. Peter promised the Holy Ghost after baptism (acts 2: Christ promised the Holy Ghost after His departure (john 16: The mission of the Spirit of God is to lead us into all truth (john 14: This gift was bestowed by the laying on of hands, as we read in Acts 8: 17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: October 26, 1916 He invited me to his home, where I saw Mother Smith and Hyrum Smith's wife, and Sister Rockwell, the mother of Orrin Porter Rockwell. We sat up talking nearly all night; for I had not much Spare time, having two appointments out, and a long day's journey for a man to walk. I had to return the next morn ing, and we conversed during most of the night, without being either sleepy or weary. During that conversation, I learned something of the rights of the Church, its organization, the restoration of the Priesthood, and many important truths. I felt to go back and fill the two appointments given out and that closed my ministry, as I felt that I had no authority, and that I would go back and obey the Priesthood, which was again upon the earth. I attended to my appointments, and was back again the next morning to Brother Hyrum's. He made me a present of the Book of Mormon, and I felt richer in the possession of that book, or the knowledge contained in it than I would, could I have had a warranty deed of all the farms and buildings in that country, and it was one of the finest regions in the world. I walked awhile, and then sat down and read awhile; for it was not my mind to read the book through at once. I would read, and then read the same portion over again, and then walk on. I was filled with joy and gladness, my Spirit was made rich, and I was made to realize, almost as vividly as if I-had seen it myself, that the Lord Jesus Christ did appear in His own proper person, in His resurrected body, and minister to the people in America in ancient times. He had surely risen from the dead and ascended into heaven, and did come down on the American continent, in the land Bountiful, on the northern part of South America, and did minister to the remnants of Joseph, called the Nephites, and did Show His resur rected body unto them. They did handle Him, see Him, and examine the wounds that were pierced in His hands His side, and His feet; and they bathed them with their tears, and kissed them, and thousands of them did bear record of these facts. He did deliver to them His gospel in its fulness and plainness, in the presence of thousands, and did command them to write it in a book; and He promised that that book should come to light in latter days, in time for the great restoration of all Israel, and the fulfilment of the prophecies re lating to the great work of the last days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: July 13, 1916 Let us reflect for a moment upon the God-revealed theory - which explains the nature of life before it entered the body, and also after it departs from the body, at death - and see if there is any reason for replacing it with the theory of Darwin, which explains neither. There are some things which, as far as human understanding can comprehend, have never had a beginning, and will never have an end. Matter is one of these things. Scientists now hold that the elements are eternal. Mormon theology stated this as a fact in the year 1833 (doe. And Gov. 93: As matter is eternal, so, likewise, is man; or, I might be more precise by saying that mind, or intelligence, the true part of man, is eternal, and never had a beginning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: June 15, 1916 As the name implies, and, as already stated, this volume of Scripture contains doctrine and covenants. Doctrine means teaching, instruction. It denotes more especially what is taught as truth, for us to believe, as distinct from precept by which rules are given to obey. Doctrine refers to belief; precept to conduct. In the Doctrine and Covenants our Lord teaches us what to believe concerning the Godhead, the Church, the Priesthood, the Millennium, the resurrection, the state of man after death in eternal glory, or the opposite, and many other subjects, about which it is necessary to have true information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: October 12, 1916 We should try to live the Word of Wisdom, a few paragraphs of which I have read, and living it, will teach us how to live better than preacher or book. By our learning each day a little more of what it means to live right, we come to have a greater honesty of purpose, greater courage of our convictions, a greater desire to help man as we help ourselves to become better, and we develop a larger love of God. I sometimes think that we are too lax in our teachings of the fundamentals of morality. We should become acquainted with, and obedient to the moral forces of life, and we should cultivate strength, beauty, and character, by right action and noble motives. We know full well that we serve God best, as we act right, and think intelligently and morally. The question of prohibition is one of morals, and now we have made it a political question, let us cast our vote to make Utah a prohibition state, not because of some political scheme of the parties to obtain favor, but because from the standpoint of right, we want liquor forever prohibited among our people, and among all people. Prohibition laws, like many others, have simply narrowed the wrong of the liquor traffic to illegality. We have substituted too much statutory righteousness for the fundamental principles of right, and the laws of nations to-da'y indicate how peoples have narrowed sin to mere illegality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: January 27, 1916 Romanists hold that the bread and wine, by the consecration, are changed into the flesh and blood of our Redeemer, as the water at the feast in Cana was changed into wine. The accidents, such as form, taste, color, chemical affinities, and nutritive qualities remain, they say, but the substance, or essence, is different, and the bread and wine remain flesh and blood after the communion. This miracle they call transubstantiation. It follows that they regard the observance of the sacrament as a propitiatory sacrifice, for the expia-tion of sin. What is offered, they say, is Christ, His body, soul, and divinity, all of which are present under the form of a wafer and wine. The doctrine of transubstantiation was first introduced in the ninth century, but was not accepted as an article of faith until the fourth Lateran council in 1215. It is founded, not on the Scriptures, but on the philosophy of Aristotle, according to which there is in everything a substance that sustains the properties we perceive with our senses, such as form, color, taste, odor, etc. A theory which may, or may not, be perfectly true, but which, nevertheless, has no bearing whatever on any question relating to the presence of our Lord in the sacrament. As far as there can be said to be any Scripture justification for this doctrine, it is supposed to be found in the words of our Lord, This is my body; This is my blood. But the Jews said of the bread broken at the passover, This is the bread of affliction, referring to the sufferings of their fathers in Egypt, although they did not mean to affirm that it was the identical' cake which their fathers had eaten, or that the bread broken had been transformed into the original loaf baked in Egypt. They meant to say that it was a. Symbol, an emblem of the bread of affliction eaten in Egyptian bondage. Jesus also said, I am the door I am the vine. One of the apostles says, That rock was Christ. Are we, therefore, to conclude that in each case transubstantiation is taught, so that Christ is changed into a door, a vine, a rock? That would be wresting the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: August 31, 1916 Now, our enemies do not believe one word of this. They think we are enthusiastic; they think this is all nonsense, and I do not know but there may be some of the Latter-day Saints that begin to partake of the same spirit, owing to their assimilating them selves so much to the fashion of the world, that they have lost their strong and powerful faith in that which God has predicted by the mouth of His servants. Perhaps you may ask for what purpose these twenty-four compartments are to be built. I answer, not to assemble the outside world in, nor to assemble the saints all in one place, but these buildings will be built with a special view to the different orders; or, in other words, the differ ent quorums or councils of the two Priesthoods that God has ordained on the earth. That is the object of having twenty-four rooms, so that each of these different quorums, whether they be High Priests or Seventies, or Elders, or Bishops, or Lesser Priest hood, or Teachers, or Deacons, or Patriarchs, or Apostles, or High Councils, or whatever may be the duties that are assigned to them, they will have rooms in the Temple of the Most High God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: November 2, 1916 How is it now? With the exception of a few, who are on mis sions or on business there. A man might travel from Maine to Louisiana, and scarcely have a chance to hear the fulness of the gospel; and if he wished to hear the gospel, he would have to come here. Thus we see the literal fulfilment of that prediction. I read it in 1830, and used to wonder how it would be fulfilled. But notwithstanding the jealousy that existed in the United States in regard to this people, the Book of Mormon was so common and preached so extensively, that some of them, right in their wicked ness, Herod-like, happened to discover the prediction in regard to the fulness of the gospel's coming to the remnants of Joseph, and happened to understand it in part.
