Book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 72

Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 72 written by Jesus Christ Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 11, 1910 One of old, I think it was Pilate, asked the Lord, What is truth? Christ did not immediately answer the question, but He answered it at another time, and this was the answer that He gave to the question: Saith the Lord, my word is truth. If God has spoken, He has spoken the truth. If He has sent His servants who teach His word, then His servants teach the truth, and the Lord Almighty is bound to sustain His word, which is truth, and also to sustain every individual soul who has established his hopes upon the word of the Lord. Now permit me to say just a few words more with reference to this. What is truth? God is truth, and Christ is truth, and the plan of life and salvation instituted by the Father in the beginning is truth, and this truth permeates every doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, the question arises in the hearts of many people, Is the mission of Joseph Smith true? We come to the world to declare to you that his mission is divine, and from my point of View, and the point of view taken by every faithful elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, if the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith be not divine, then the mission and the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ will fall in the same way. This is our testimony to the children of men, and this testimony bears to you, our friends, a message of peace and reconciliation to God. We believe in every doctrine taught by the Son of God, and our belief in these principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ are not of any avail to us except we do more than simply believe in them, What will it avail a man to believe that repentance of sin is a true doctrine, if he does not repent of his sins What will it avail for you or me to believe in Christ the Son of God, and yet neglect to obey and keep His commandments? Let us put our belief and our faith into works, and then we will please God. The Savior said, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (matt. 8: 24 Now my friends, the Lord restored the Priesthood through John the Bap tist to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, which holds the power of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, and later he was visited by Peter, James and John, and they conferred upon him and upon his associate the Melchizedek Priesthood, which is after the order of the Son of God, thus conferring upon man the authority of God to ofi'iciate in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. N ow, these things are true, or they are not true. And we come to declare to the world that we know they are true. Therefore, whosoever will receive these teachings and this doctrine, and the blessings and privileges of the Holy Priesthood, will eventually become heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: September 8, 1932 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege; let them worship how, where, or what they many. Had any progress been made? Do you perceive advancement there in the working out of the divine purpose? This latter declaration was made by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Thus solemn affirmation was made of the inherent right of every man to worship as he will, or, by implication, to abstain from worshiping at all if he will - and can. There are substantial grounds for questioning man's ability to become wholly devoid of the impelling spirit of worship, at least ac knowledging - in love or in fear - some supreme power or Deity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: June 1, 1916 Now we all need patience, forbearance, forgiveness, humility, charity, love unfeigned, devotion to the truth, abhorrence of sin, of wickedness, of rebellion and of disobedience to the requirements of the gospel. These are the qualifications requisite to Latter-day Saints, and to becoming Latter-day Saints, members in good standing in the Church of Jesus Christ, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. N 0 member in good standing in the Church will be drunken, riotous, profane, or will take advantage of his brother or his neighbor, or will Violate the principles of vir tue, honor, and righteousness. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints in good standing will never be charge able with such offenses as these, because they will avoid these evils and they will live above them. Then we have a mission in the world, each man, each woman, each child, who has grown to understanding or to the years of accountability - all ought to be examples to the world, ought not only to be qualified to preach the truth, to bear testimony of the truth, but they ought to live so that the very life they live, the very words they speak, their every action in life, will be sermons to the unwary and to the ignorant, teaching them goodness, purity, uprightness, faith in God and love for the human family. God bless you and all the household of faith, and help us to be true and faithful to the end, realizing that the battle is not to the strong, nor the race to the swift, but to him that endures to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: August 17, 1916 The people of the world at the present time are all for pleasure, and seem to think about nothing except this world's goods. If you will open your Bible at I. John 2: 15, you will find these words, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. My mind is not set upon this world's goods. I am trying to do as Jesus Christ taught, namely, to lay up treasures for myself in heaven, where moth and rust cannot creep in, and where thieves cannot break through and steal. The world are laying up treasures on earth, where rust can corrupt, and thieves break through and steal. Christ says (matt. 16: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? The gospel of Christ, as taught by the Latter-day Saints, is indeed a Pearl of Great Price. It brings true happiness and con tentment. Paul says (i. Tim. 6; 6 But godliness with content ment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. We are told again (matt. 6: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you. In order to do this, we must do as Christ says (john 5: Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me, then we shall find that we must repent of our sins, with a godly sorrow, not with the sorrow of the world, which, as Paul says (ii. Cor. 7: worketh death. Christ has provided a way in which we can get remission of our sins. Peter (acts 2: 38) commands the people to be baptized for the remission of their sins. Again, we find that Paul was commanded to be baptized to wash away his sins (acts 22: After baptism, we receive the Com forter, which is the Holy Ghost. Peter promised the Holy Ghost after baptism (acts 2: Christ promised the Holy Ghost after His departure (john 16: The mission of the Spirit of God is to lead us into all truth (john 14: This gift was bestowed by the laying on of hands, as we read in Acts 8: 17. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: August 8, 1912 The Scriptures tell us that Moses was called to do a certain work among his brethren. He was the man, not of self choosing, for the position. He had been specially preserved by Divine inter position and prepared for the calling, and yet he complained of many defects in his nature. The Lord was under the necessity of compelling him to serve, and in doing so he took away from him one of the leading qualifications of our modern schools of divinity - eloquence. Every man who sought to usurp authority pertaining to God or to take upon himself that which did not of right belong to him was chastised - this we learn from the reading of the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: May 25, 1916 Closing hymn, Praise ye the Lord, 'tis good to raise. Benedic tion was pronounced by Brother William Seckington. The afternoon session commenced by singing Come, 0 Thou King of kings. Prayer by Elder Aaron T. Pingree. Continued by singing, High on the mountain top. The names of the general and local authorities were then pre sented, and those officers were unanimously sustained. President James Judd expressed his pleasure in meeting again to hear the servants of God. He stated that the world is becoming irreligious and is making light of the lawsof God. We should be of one mind and one faith, as Paul in speaking to the Corinthians said, I exhort you in the name of Jesus Christ to be of one faith. All the different churches can not be right, but they all could be wrong, and there can be only one true church, as there can be only one way to enter the kingdom of heaven. There was only one gospel given, and no one had the right to alter or change that gospel. The servants of God had divine authority and were called of God to preach this gospel. Therefore what Peter preached was the gospel of Jesus Christ, for he was called of God; he taught faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; also, repentance and baptism, and the laying on of hands for the reception of the Holy Ghost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: October 26, 1916 He invited me to his home, where I saw Mother Smith and Hyrum Smith's wife, and Sister Rockwell, the mother of Orrin Porter Rockwell. We sat up talking nearly all night; for I had not much Spare time, having two appointments out, and a long day's journey for a man to walk. I had to return the next morn ing, and we conversed during most of the night, without being either sleepy or weary. During that conversation, I learned something of the rights of the Church, its organization, the restoration of the Priesthood, and many important truths. I felt to go back and fill the two appointments given out and that closed my ministry, as I felt that I had no authority, and that I would go back and obey the Priesthood, which was again upon the earth. I attended to my appointments, and was back again the next morning to Brother Hyrum's. He made me a present of the Book of Mormon, and I felt richer in the possession of that book, or the knowledge contained in it than I would, could I have had a warranty deed of all the farms and buildings in that country, and it was one of the finest regions in the world. I walked awhile, and then sat down and read awhile; for it was not my mind to read the book through at once. I would read, and then read the same portion over again, and then walk on. I was filled with joy and gladness, my Spirit was made rich, and I was made to realize, almost as vividly as if I-had seen it myself, that the Lord Jesus Christ did appear in His own proper person, in His resurrected body, and minister to the people in America in ancient times. He had surely risen from the dead and ascended into heaven, and did come down on the American continent, in the land Bountiful, on the northern part of South America, and did minister to the remnants of Joseph, called the Nephites, and did Show His resur rected body unto them. They did handle Him, see Him, and examine the wounds that were pierced in His hands His side, and His feet; and they bathed them with their tears, and kissed them, and thousands of them did bear record of these facts. He did deliver to them His gospel in its fulness and plainness, in the presence of thousands, and did command them to write it in a book; and He promised that that book should come to light in latter days, in time for the great restoration of all Israel, and the fulfilment of the prophecies re lating to the great work of the last days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: February 17, 1916 A question closely connected with the previous is this: In what mental and intellectual condition did man first appear on earth? A certain class of scientists tell us that man appeared on earth but little removed, in intelligence, from the brute creation. By slow degrees he rose, they say, from this condition until he reached a state of very crude civilization. After ages of development he reached the stone age; then the bronze age; then the iron age. Ages are needed for each stage in this evolution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: November 9, 1916 After the spirit leaves the body, it remains without a tabernacle in the spirit world until the Lord, by His law which He has or dained, brings to pass the resurrection of the dead: ten the angel who holds the keys of the resurrection shall sound his trumpet, then the peculiar fundamental particles that organized our bodies here, if we do honor to them, though they be deposited in the depths of the sea. And though one particle is in the north. Another in the south. Another in the east, and another in the west, will be brought together in the twinkling of an eye, and our spirits will take possession of them. \ve shall then be prepared to dwell with the Father and the Son, and we never can be pre pared to dwell with them until then. Spirits, when they leave their bodies, do not dwell with the Father and the Son, but live in the spirit world, where there are places prepared for them. Those who do honor to their tabernacles, who love and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, must put off this mortality, or they cannot put on immortality. This body must be changed, else it cannot be prepared to dwell in the glory of the Father. To me all these things are plain and easy. All we want is to understand the very subject Jesus was talking about, the nature of our organizations, the world we occupy, the laws by which we are, and by which we continue to exist. Brother Hyde says, Take the world, and what do they know pertaining to the things of God? Do they know their right hands from their left, figuratively speaking? No. All that Brother Hyde has said concerning our important position is true. It is beyond the power of man to fully unfold it, though a portion has been beautifully portrayed, and it seems that the people should see things that are so plain. \vere it possible for the nations to gain power to destroy this kingdom 011 the earth, by so doing they would seal their eternal damnation. That is as true as it is that Jesus died for the sins of the world; as true as it is that there is a heaven, a God, and that the world exists, and the children of men dwell upon it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 79: December 6, 1917 Then I bear testimony again to you, my brethren and sisters, that the foundation of the cause in which we are engaged is the gospel truth, and it is a glorious thing to know that so many and yet so few in comparison to the vast aggregation of humanity - have learned the truth, learned the fact that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation, and that it must of necessity be the truth, for God has never devised error for the redemption of His children, nor for their blessing and ex altation. He has never given to the children of men falsehood and error to lead them back into His presence. The Almighty, in the beginning; never devised a plan for the redemption of His children that was not true, that was not efficacious, that would not be effectual in the accomplishment of His purpose to bring to pass the final exaltation into the kingdom and the enjoyment of His presence, of all His children who would obey His laws and keep His commandments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: July 24, 1919 Long and earnestly the great leader gazes upon the scene, while the members of the little company await breathlessly the verdict. Then, relaxing his hold upon the shoulders of his supporters. He utters the memorable words: This is the Place! Drive on. This is the Place! The place for what? What objective had led this little company of toil-worn men and women to sacrifice the gentler customs and comforts of civilization, to wend their way out into the heart of the Great American Desert? Ah! It was the witness in their souls that God was about to perform a mar velons work and a wonder. His kingdom was about to come to earth, and it was here, here in the midst of desolations, that the nucleus of His work was to be laid! This had been the warp and the woof of their dreams by night, and the vision that glowed before their spiritual eyes by day, throughout all the long, weary march, characterized by so much physical pain and suffering. This the vision that prompted them to'new effort when physical strength hung in the balance! The overwhelming conviction that God had not forgotten His people, nor His prophets; the inspira tion of which had heartened them time and time again, while on the pilgrimage, to take up the strains of: Come, come, ye saints. No toil nor labor fear - all is well! All is well! For this, like those of old, they took gladly the Spoiling of their goods, dispossession, exile far from the madding crowd, that they might have the privi lege of worshiping God as their souls desired, and that they might secure for themselves a place of refuge in which to begin the great latter-day work of preparation for the coming of the Great King. And so, down into the valley bottom they wended their way. And there, before the sun had yet declined beyond the western hills, they had already begun the establishment of a civilization in the heart of those vast solitudes. The voice of God had said, through the inspiration of the prophets of old: It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the tops of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations Shall flow unto it. A house must be builded, then, to the Lord, so that the Christ should not again have it to say that the foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to lay His head. On April 6th, 1853, just five years from the time of their entrance into the valley, and while yet the people labored in dire poverty, the foundation stones of the temple of God were laid.
