Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: April 30, 1903 He referred to the other point suggested by President Smith, the necessity of manual training. The fact that it is needful to call attention to this matter indicates that we are undergoing a change. The limits of our population are becoming more restricted. 'young men have to push out into new countries; and in order to do this, they must know something of the mechanical arts. The professions are already overcrowded. This is a day of organization. Everything is controlled by corporations. One of the questions for the Latter day Saints to answer is, what shall be the relation between those among us who practise the mechanical arts and trades, and the trade unions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: May 8, 1913 First: That such a condition of general apostasy was foreseen by the apostle and prophets as recorded by their writings in the Bible. Second: That the churches of to-day do not measure up to the description of Christ's church given in holy writ, and as described by the early Christian fathers. Third: That all the different contending Christian creeds cannot be right, else Christ becomes the author of confusion, and as He says, A house divided against itself cannot stand, so all the different and conflicting creeds cannot expect to stand. Fourth: That it was predicted that God would restore His gospel and that, too, after the time John, the Beloved, was on the Isle of Patmos. Fifth That the claims of Joseph Smith are not out of keeping with scripture, and that the church so often ascribed to his founding bears the marks of the original institution, together with all the gifts and blessings that were enjoyed by former-day saints. Sixth: That the teachings of the Church to-day are both scrip tural and reasonable. Seventh: That a vast deal of external evidence has come to light since the death of the prophet to prove his claims concerning the work which was established through him. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. The importance of baptism is here set before us in the plainest terms. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 28, 1913 Then followed two months of closest investigation and deepest study. I read the Mormon literature, compared the teachings there with the teachings of the Bible, attended their meetings, and finally, being fully convinced that truth was with the Mormons, I applied for baptism and admission into their Church. The first time I met with the elders, I followed their advice, and prayed to God for a testimony of the truth, and that same night. In answer to earnest prayer, I received the assurance within my soul that the Mormon Church was, indeed, the Church of God. But I would not accept the knowledge, I could not, I fought against it with all my available powers. It could not be, it could not 1 The way to heaven through the Church that was every where spoken against! The Mormons God's chosen people Must I join forces with them, and hear my name spoken in terms of contempt and derision It was too much to ask. I could not do it. And yet within my ears sounded ever the words, What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul, and after all, what should I lose? And would not the salvation of my soul more than compensate? And so the battle was fought, truth conquered, and I became a Mormon. The day I was baptized (and in spite of all the world says in derision to the contrary, the truth was prevailing, for four men were baptized on the same occasion, and one little girl), one of the elders (d. G. Selman), addressing the meeting at night, turned to us who had that day taken our stand for God and truth and said, Don't think that the battle is ended, for you it has only just begun. I, for one, was soon to prove the truth of those words. During the two months investigation I had said nothing to my friends of what was taking place within my mind. I felt it was a matter that rested entirely with my own soul and with God. I realized fully that I had a soul to save, and that none but God could aid me, and so I said no word. But when the battle was won, and I had done that from which there was no returning, then I wrote and told my friends What had taken place. It will add coals to the fire of faith already burning within us. It will add impetus to our zeal and determination to press on. Courage. Is a boon to every man. Courage carries us through storms of persecution and brings us out triumphant; or, as one writer puts it, Courage is naked Right put through the fire and brought out uncracked and unbroken. Christ was a glorious example of courage. Coming into an apostate world He meekly presents Himself as the Messiah - the Son of God. Nothing more blasphemous in the ears of the Jews could have been uttered, yet it was a solemn truth. He traveled about in humility and self-abasement, teaching doctrines appar ently contrary to the law of Moses, facing persecution on every hand, renouncing the pious Scribes and Pharisees, and calling sinners unto repentance. He knew that all this was contrary. To Jewish ideas; but He had come to revise those ideas. One of the crowning events of His earthly life was the beautiful example He set for us in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the intense affliction of His soul, He sought courage from God. He taught us the in fallible source from which we can draw comfort and courage when our hours of trial and despondency appear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 7, 1913 Another coterie of sectarian critics, like the famous traveler from Altruria, who found his guileless soul constantly in pain, because the Golden Rule appeals not to worldly cupidity, publish a wail of horror at the record of the juvenile court in a city overwhelmingly Because of this dreadful list, including truancy, malicious mischief, use of tobacco, violating city ordinances, trespassing on railroad cars, and several other offences common to youth, even in Christian communities, their trenchant editor runs amuck through half a column, reviling a senator, accusing a drug company of boose - vending, hinting at vague rumors of unprintable doings, which no one had attempted to print, and concludes thus The reason is that in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints there is no saving power. The 'mormon' Church has not and cannot change. [shades of the grammarians The only hope for Utah is in the evan gelical churches, and these churches must declare the whole counsel of God, or sadly miss their chance. Well, good, kind, logical gentlemen, declare the whole counsel of God and do it now - it should take the whole time of all of you but do soft-pedal these railing accusations based on the folly of irresponsible children, and omit this hoodlum gossip about unprint table doings which are no monopoly of Mormons, else some of us will conclude that you know little enough of God and His counsels. If the evangelical churches are going to purge Utah of the vicious practices of truancy and trespassing on railroad cars, which so seriously discredit Mormon influences, it is a great mystery that juvenile delinquents are so numerous and so enterprising in communities blessed with the untrammeled influence of evan gelicalism. This situation reminds one curiously of the fable of the boastful traveler, who, on returning home, brought witnesses to attest a mighty jump once made by him in Rhodes. N 0 need for witnesses, said his neighbors. Pretend this is Rhodes, and jump again. The marvelous things to be accomplished by the missionaries of our ineffective sects, among the heathen and others, is always out of all proportion to anything they have ever done at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: May 15, 1913 The Mormons believe that when God says, I am the Lord, I change not (mal. 3: His words are fraught with deepest mean ing to them, for they mean to them, for instance, that since God ministered to His people by angels and prophets in the early days, we can look for just the same in these days. They believe in the signs that should follow believers - as the gift of healing-and demonstrate its truth, as I and thousands of others can testify. They believe Christ meant what He said when He tells us the way to heaven is through the waters of baptism. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved (matt. 16: said Christ, placing belief first. But, say the. Churches of the world, we do better than that, you know, we baptize first we can believe afterwards; and yet Christ said, I am the way. The world goes to the learned men of its time for its know ledge, the Mormons go straight to God. You remember reading how Elijah was hiding from Jezebel in a cave, when God directed him to stand out on the mountain, and as he stood, a great and mighty wind passed by which shook the mountain to its founda tions, but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it came to pass when Elijah heard it, he hid his face in his mantle, for he recognized the voice of his God, and that still small voice speaks to-day, and the Mormons hear it. It is the voice of the Spirit of God, heard only by those whose spirits are trained to catch the sound. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
