This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 11, 1910 Now to the Latter-day Saints: You have put your hand to the plough of the gospel. It would be destruction to you to turn back. If Mormonism, so-called, is true, then you cannot desert Mormonism without deserting the truth, and yet some men will deny the faith and depart from the Church, because they become offended at the conduct or the acts of one of their brethren. No matter what other people do, yet I say as one of old said, As for me and my house, we will serve God. Let each individual mem ber of the Church feel in his soul that he has found the great prize, and that he will not yield it up, that he will not trample it under his feet, but that he will treasure it in his soul, and will re tain it though all others in the world depart from it. It is the truth that will make us free, and upon the foundation of truth we must build our hopes and our expectations of salvation in the kingdom of God. Remember this, that no church can rise above the truth. N 0 man, no teacher, no instructor of men, can ever be come a law unto himself and build himself up above the truth. On the truth we must stand firm and steadfast. One of old, I think it was Pilate, asked the Lord, What is truth? Christ did not immediately answer the question, but He answered it at another time, and this was the answer that He gave to the question: Saith the Lord, my word is truth. If God has spoken, He has spoken the truth. If He has sent His servants who teach His word, then His servants teach the truth, and the Lord Almighty is bound to sustain His word, which is truth, and also to sustain every individual soul who has established his hopes upon the word of the Lord. Now permit me to say just a few words more with reference to this. What is truth? God is truth, and Christ is truth, and the plan of life and salvation instituted by the Father in the beginning is truth, and this truth permeates every doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. N ow, the question arises in the hearts of many people, Is the mission of Joseph Smith true? We come to the world to declare to you that his mission is divine, and from my point of View and the point of view taken by every faithful elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, if the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith be not divine, then the mission and the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ will fall in the same way. This is our testimony to the children of men, and this testimony bears to you, our friends, a message of peace and reconciliation to God. We believe in every doctrine taught by the Son of God, and our belief in these principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ are not of any avail to us except we do more than simply believe in them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 21, 1913 N ow, God also has a body of flesh and bone like we have. One time when Abraham was in the plains Of Mamre, as we read in Genesis, 18th chapter, God appeared unto him when he sat at his tent door. Abraham looked and saw three men coming towards him. Fancy telling men to-day that God is exactly like themselves in form. They would laugh; yet Abraham. Knew Him at once, and ran to meet Him and bowed himself toward the ground, and said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant. And he also asked Him to tarry with him, and let His feet be washed because it was the custom in those eastern countries to do so, and also to partake Of some food before He went on His journey, and the Lord consented to do so. Fancy a being not having a tangible body stopping to have his feet washed, and partaking of food. The Lord also said at this time that Sarah Should have a child, which came to pass. The' Lord also told Abraham that He was going down to Sodom and Gomorrah to see if the reports that He had heard regarding the wickedness of these places was correct, and we read that Abraham pleaded with God regarding those places. SO there can be no doubt regarding the fact that our Father in heaven has a body exactly like unto our own in form, one difference, among others, being that while we are mortal, God is immortal; but when we rise from the grave this mortal will put on immortality, and then we shall be like Him, immortal also. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 25, 1910 Those of us who have been baptised by those holding the authority of this Priesthood are indeed born again out of the water and of the Spirit, and inasmuch as we abide in the truth then are we joint heirs with Jesus Christ. As a child I knew the prophet, Joseph Smith. I was as familiar with him and in his home as I was with my own father and in my father's home. What I remember of him is that he was a good man, a man who loved the poor, a man who had a heart like a woman's in sympathy for all the afflicted. He was a good father to his children and he was a prophet of God. N ow I know this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: September 8, 1910 True, all these things provide employment for those who are engaged in the vocations which provide the amusements, but that is not the point. What is really essential is the ultimate result of the present conditions of society in relation to the production of the necessaries of life. The cry of the poor to-day is the high prices which have to be paid for everything which makes life tolerable. Why are prices high? It is principally be cause young men are taught that it is easier to amass wealth by the manipulation of the markets, by gambling in stocks, than by the useful labor of their hands and brains, by which they would produce something tangible for the good of the community rather than to organize syndicates by which the poor are robbed of the common necessaries of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: April 28, 1910 I could not keep my seat when the priest said the 'mormons' were not Christians, and didn't believe in Christ. I told him about my dear mother, who is now dead, taking me on her lap many times when I was only four or five years old, teaching me that J esus was the Son of God, and about His atonement and that it was only through Him that we all could be saved. Addressing the pastor, I said: 'these lessons I'll never forget as long as I live, and let me tell you, pastor, that my mother was a 'mormon' and that I was born over in Utah. Now don't you ever tell anybody that the Latter-day Saints don't teach Christ and Him crucified, for that is a falsehood.' He bowed his head as if he were ashamed. 'why, ' said I, 'i have never heard anything but that as long back as I can remember; if there is anybody who believes in J esas, the Latter-day Saints do.' I continued my talk to him, and explained authority, and revelation, and priesthood, telling him about the restoration of the same, etc. He then looked at his watch and said it was time to go, but, before he went, I made him a present of 'the Fundamental Principles of the Gospel, ' (by Apostle Orson Pratt), which he accepted and promised to read. He took me by the hand and thanked me. We parted after about forty minutes interview. When the elders previously visited this man he had in almost every case refused to take our tracts, but now he accepted a good book. Respecting this phase of the case it is now merely observed that the Almighty has never placed Himself under any obligation to bring to pass all things which are made the objects upon which human faith rests, and this point shall receive more particular attention in due time before closing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 31, 1910 The splendid organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it exists to-day, is one of the fruits of the system, or doctrine, and it cannot be said with any degree of reason that the good conduct of a comparatively few men engaged in missionary work abroad, while the great body of the people were living horrible lives at home, could bring about such admirable results. The missionaries constitute but a single branch of the great tree of Mormonism, and if it is healthy and vigor ous and shows good fruits, then the trunk and the roots must of necessity be healthy and vigorous. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. The presence of these well-behaved men in the missionary field is a matter worthy of more than passing thought, when we consider the fruits of the tree of Mormonism. They come from all avocations direct into the work without preparation, in the ordinary sense, as ministers, but they are almost immediately able to discuss the principles of life and salvation readily and intelli gently, overwhelming the clergy by their wide understanding of the Holy Scriptures. They come from the cities, the farms, and in many cases from regions that may be termed frontiers, yet their behavior is such that even ministers of the gospel, who are unfriendly to the system, acknowledge their excellence. This is all the result of Mormonism. Their ability to meet the learned in the discussion of religion, to behave circumspectly and with propriety in all lands, they owe to the enlightening and refining influence of their faith. Of themselves they are weak, just as the apostles of the Lord were in olden times, but having been nourished from this tree of spiritual and intellectual life, they burst forth into able teachers of men. Could results like this come from a bad source? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 3, 1910 It is related that General Johnston, pretending to believe that Colonel Kane was a spy, sent an orderly to place him under arrest, but upon subsequent consideration blunderingly converted the order into an invitation to dine at headquarters. Colonel Kane's response was a formal challenge to the commanding officer. Governor Cumming espoused the cause of his guest and resented with great spirit the insult which had been offered him. The impending duel was prevented by the prompt action of Chief Justice Eckels, who threatened to arrest and punish all concerned if it proceeded farther. Mrs. Kane, writing with reference to this incident says: It may seem as if it were an anti-climax that Colonel Kane, on what he felt to be a God-given mission, should challenge Albert Sidney Johnston to fight a duel. But old fashioned chivalry in that day still believed in duelling, and Colonel Kane welcomed the chance given him by Johnston's blunder in arresting him on his arrival in camp, to claim Governor Cumming's services as his second. The old Georgian's hospitable blood was fired by the insult offered to his guest, and he at once became willing to act as his second, and, further, to become his champion and partisan to the extent of placing himself in his hands to go with a Mormon escort to Salt Lake City against the strongest remonstrances of Johnston.
