Book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 72

Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 72 written by Jesus Christ Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 11, 1910 One of old, I think it was Pilate, asked the Lord, What is truth? Christ did not immediately answer the question, but He answered it at another time, and this was the answer that He gave to the question: Saith the Lord, my word is truth. If God has spoken, He has spoken the truth. If He has sent His servants who teach His word, then His servants teach the truth, and the Lord Almighty is bound to sustain His word, which is truth, and also to sustain every individual soul who has established his hopes upon the word of the Lord. Now permit me to say just a few words more with reference to this. What is truth? God is truth, and Christ is truth, and the plan of life and salvation instituted by the Father in the beginning is truth, and this truth permeates every doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, the question arises in the hearts of many people, Is the mission of Joseph Smith true? We come to the world to declare to you that his mission is divine, and from my point of View, and the point of view taken by every faithful elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, if the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith be not divine, then the mission and the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ will fall in the same way. This is our testimony to the children of men, and this testimony bears to you, our friends, a message of peace and reconciliation to God. We believe in every doctrine taught by the Son of God, and our belief in these principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ are not of any avail to us except we do more than simply believe in them, What will it avail a man to believe that repentance of sin is a true doctrine, if he does not repent of his sins What will it avail for you or me to believe in Christ the Son of God, and yet neglect to obey and keep His commandments? Let us put our belief and our faith into works, and then we will please God. The Savior said, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (matt. 8: 24 Now my friends, the Lord restored the Priesthood through John the Bap tist to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, which holds the power of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, and later he was visited by Peter, James and John, and they conferred upon him and upon his associate the Melchizedek Priesthood, which is after the order of the Son of God, thus conferring upon man the authority of God to ofi'iciate in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. N ow, these things are true, or they are not true. And we come to declare to the world that we know they are true. Therefore, whosoever will receive these teachings and this doctrine, and the blessings and privileges of the Holy Priesthood, will eventually become heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. On the day of Pentecost, Peter said to the believing multitude: Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (acts 2: And that, that they might know with him: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. As to how they could know, Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this [the above named] rock [of revela tion] I will build my Church. (matt. 16: 16 Paul says in I. Cor. Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speak ing by the spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed; and that no man can say [and know it] that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. The Lord speaking in the revelations given to Joseph Smith as contained in the Doctrine and Covenants, section 20: 37, says, All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits and witness before the Church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve Him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into His Church. And in section 46: 13 To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that He was crucified for the sins of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 31, 1910 The splendid organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it exists to-day, is one of the fruits of the system, or doctrine, and it cannot be said with any degree of reason that the good conduct of a comparatively few men engaged in missionary work abroad, while the great body of the people were living horrible lives at home, could bring about such admirable results. The missionaries constitute but a single branch of the great tree of Mormonism, and if it is healthy and vigor ous and shows good fruits, then the trunk and the roots must of necessity be healthy and vigorous. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. The presence of these well-behaved men in the missionary field is a matter worthy of more than passing thought, when we consider the fruits of the tree of Mormonism. They come from all avocations direct into the work without preparation, in the ordinary sense, as ministers, but they are almost immediately able to discuss the principles of life and salvation readily and intelli gently, overwhelming the clergy by their wide understanding of the Holy Scriptures. They come from the cities, the farms, and in many cases from regions that may be termed frontiers, yet their behavior is such that even ministers of the gospel, who are unfriendly to the system, acknowledge their excellence. This is all the result of Mormonism. Their ability to meet the learned in the discussion of religion, to behave circumspectly and with propriety in all lands, they owe to the enlightening and refining influence of their faith. Of themselves they are weak, just as the apostles of the Lord were in olden times, but having been nourished from this tree of spiritual and intellectual life, they burst forth into able teachers of men. Could results like this come from a bad source? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: April 28, 1910 I could not keep my seat when the priest said the 'mormons' were not Christians, and didn't believe in Christ. I told him about my dear mother, who is now dead, taking me on her lap many times when I was only four or five years old, teaching me that J esus was the Son of God, and about His atonement and that it was only through Him that we all could be saved. Addressing the pastor, I said: 'these lessons I'll never forget as long as I live, and let me tell you, pastor, that my mother was a 'mormon' and that I was born over in Utah. Now don't you ever tell anybody that the Latter-day Saints don't teach Christ and Him crucified, for that is a falsehood.' He bowed his head as if he were ashamed. 'why, ' said I, 'i have never heard anything but that as long back as I can remember; if there is anybody who believes in J esas, the Latter-day Saints do.' I continued my talk to him, and explained authority, and revelation, and priesthood, telling him about the restoration of the same, etc. He then looked at his watch and said it was time to go, but, before he went, I made him a present of 'the Fundamental Principles of the Gospel, ' (by Apostle Orson Pratt), which he accepted and promised to read. He took me by the hand and thanked me. We parted after about forty minutes interview. When the elders previously visited this man he had in almost every case refused to take our tracts, but now he accepted a good book. Its influence and development were so marked and the work of Joseph Smith, its founder, so marvelous, that an historical writer of the time, Josiah Quincy, a few weeks after Joseph Smith's martyrdom, wrote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: October 6, 1910 The Pharisees and the Sadducees derived their authority for their differences largely from tradition and from a study of the Jewish scriptures; and the churches of to-day get their's principally from tradition and from the perusal of the Old and New Testa ments. Christ's apostles quoted the scriptures frequently to prove their doctrines but their authority came direct from heaven. The same is true as to the authority of John the Baptist. He says that he was sent by a heavenly messenger to baptize: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me (john 1: The saints quote the scriptures, too, and value them as God's word, but their authority to act in His name is by revel ation from Him through His Son Jesus Christ. However, since God is unchangeable, His doctrines will harmonize with each other from age to age. The Savior added to the teachings of Moses, but, in spirit, can hardly be said to have contradicted them. To the despised gospel the present day world has applied the derisive epithet Mormonism in like manner, the Antiochians, not content with the term brethren (romans 10: or saints (romans 1: 7) as used by the followers of Christ themselves, must invent the word Christian. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. (acts 11. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As a child I knew the prophet, Joseph Smith. I was as familiar with him and in his home as I was with my own father and in my father's home. What I remember of him is that he was a good man, a man who loved the poor, a man who had a heart like a woman's in sympathy for all the afflicted. He was a good father to his children and he was a prophet of God. N ow I know this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 3, 1910 It is related that General Johnston, pretending to believe that Colonel Kane was a spy, sent an orderly to place him under arrest, but upon subsequent consideration blunderingly converted the order into an invitation to dine at headquarters. Colonel Kane's response was a formal challenge to the commanding officer. Governor Cumming espoused the cause of his guest and resented with great spirit the insult which had been offered him. The impending duel was prevented by the prompt action of Chief Justice Eckels, who threatened to arrest and punish all concerned if it proceeded farther. Mrs. Kane, writing with reference to this incident says: It may seem as if it were an anti-climax that Colonel Kane, on what he felt to be a God-given mission, should challenge Albert Sidney Johnston to fight a duel. But old fashioned chivalry in that day still believed in duelling, and Colonel Kane welcomed the chance given him by Johnston's blunder in arresting him on his arrival in camp, to claim Governor Cumming's services as his second. The old Georgian's hospitable blood was fired by the insult offered to his guest, and he at once became willing to act as his second, and, further, to become his champion and partisan to the extent of placing himself in his hands to go with a Mormon escort to Salt Lake City against the strongest remonstrances of Johnston. As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. Like all other scripture, these passages show the true nature of God and His manner of dealing with His children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: February 17, 1910 After Christianity had been made the state religion of Rome, officers of the Church sought the high places for self-aggrandise ment, making merchandise of the rights associated therewith, finally arrogating to themselves in the form of councils and synods, the right of Church government which formerly had been exercised through the principle of common consent. But at this time, the lay members ceased to have a voice in their own government. The Church, raised to a place of dignity, soon assumed temporal powers, even interfering in matters of state. Dr. Mosheim declares that in the height of its power, the popes carried their insolent pretensions so far as to give themselves out for lords of the universe, arbiters of the fate of kingdoms and empires, and supreme rulers over the kings and princes of the earth. All this is priestcraft. Priesthood rules by the spirit of love under all conditions; priestcraft rules through tyranny and oppression wherever possible. Yes, certainly. But the same Divine authority which teaches the saving power of faith also states that faith without works is dead, being alone, or by itself (j as. 12: 17) - dead as the body is without the spirit, as the 26th verse of this same chapter points out. And who can reasonably expect to reap any benefit from a dead faith? Let us not deceive ourselves: for the virtue of our faith is in our works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: January 6, 1910 Prejudice and ignorance are gradually giving way before the light of truth. We have had the privilege of correcting many errors that have in the past crept into encyclopedias and histories, and in line with this we are pleased to see the commencement of the publication of the history of the Church in the Americana, one of the leading historical journals published in the United States. This magazine circulates among an intelligent class of people. The publication of these articles grew out of an attack made by a designing person on the origin of the Book of Mormon that appeared in the same magazine. The privilege was granted Elder B. H. Roberts to make a reply. Which was later followed by his being invited to write a short history of the Church to run through several numbers of the magazine. We feel to recommend this magazine to the Latter-day Saints, and trust they will support it with their subscriptions. The world is gradually learning that the Church has been mis understood and should have a respectful hearing. In fact this recognition has taken the form, among some of the Christian sects, of adopting certain principles of the gospel taught by the Church: The principle of revelation, the doctrine of the personality and individuality of the Godhead, the law of tithing, the Word of Wisdom, requiring temperance on the part of the members in the strictest sense, the abstaining from all harmful and unnecessary drugs and stimulants: the anointing of the sick with oil, and prayer in their behalf, and other principles revealed by the Lord to the Church. The dogmas of infant damnation and that there is no salvation beyond the grave have generally found disfavor and by many have been abandoned since the advent of the gospel into the world. While there are exceptions, the saints in general have been faithful and diligent in the discharge of their obligations, in keep ing the commandments required of them as members, and in listening to the counsel and instruction given them by the priest hood; and the officers of the Church, both general and local, have been actively engaged in performing the various duties devolving upon them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 18, 1910 This prediction was made by Malachi, the prophet, concerning the coming of the Lord of hosts in power and glory in the latter days, and concerning the messenger He should send to prepare the way before Him. For the day is not far distant when the Redeemer of the world will appear in the heavens clothed in robes of righteousness. At that time He will take vengeance on the ungodly and reward the faithful, with Whom He Shall live and reign on earth one thousand years. The Lord has sent into the world a messenger to prepare the way before Him. The mes senger has established His Church and has taught the gospel among the children of men that the righteous may be gathered out from the world before the day of judgment, and the wicked, who will not repent, may be left without excuse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: May 5, 1910 His Majesty King James of England, a number of highly educated men, as may be read from the title page and preface to the Bible commonly in use, compared and revised former translations, and from the copies of manuscripts within their reach formulated the edition of the Scriptures used among the Protestant denominations for several centuries. This was done specially to distinguish the translation from that regarded as authoritative by the Roman Catholic Church popularly known as The Douay Bible. Thus there have been for hundreds of years two distinct, and in many respects different translations of the Scriptures in use in Christen dom, and regarded as the written word of God by Catholics on the one hand and Protestants on the other. But even the King James' Translation has not been altogether satisfactory to learned men among the Protestant sects, and so there have been different translations published, and recently an entirely new version has been made, which is generally adopted among the most advanced scholars, as being more correct than the version popularly ao cepted. Volumes are published containing, side by side on the same pages, the text of the old version and that of the new, so that readers may take their choice. In addition to that, all close students of the Bible know that marginal references are given in the King James' translation, to thousands of words in the body of the text. Literal translations from the Hebrew appear in the margin, as conveying the original meaning more closely than that offered in the text. All this goes to show that the words we use concerning our faith in the Bible as the word of God, so far as it is translated correctly, is reason able and proper and necessary. But here are a few examples of evident mistakes, or defective arrangements of the language in the ordinary text: And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. (gen. 3: Take that as it stands, and it is open to the ridicule of skeptics who frequently cite it in a spirit of derision. The translators have in many instances inserted some words in italic letters in order to make good sense, and that without violating the evident meaning of the original. If they had done so in this instance, they would have made the text read: And they heard the voice of the Lord God as they were walking in the garden in the cool of the day. Take Genesis 22: 1: And it came to pass after these things that God did tempt Abraham. In the epistle of St. James 1: 13, it is written, Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil neither tempteth He any man. These contradictory texts are also cited by skeptics. Now, if the word tempt in Genesis had been written test, or try, it would have conveyed the proper signification of God's act in the case, and the apparent contradiction would not occur.
