Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 9, 1909 The signs of the times point to a future rejection of many of the present teachings of Christendom. In the great conflict between science and the religion or theology of the world, where do we find enrolled the scientific minds? With science, every time, and in a position which is deadly antagonistic to a theology, which, among the rest of its tenets, teaches the creation of new matter out of nothing. The inrush of knowledge and truth has proved its nu stability and it is but a matter of time until the people as a whole will recognize, as have the thinking and scientific minds, that the doctrine is indigestible and that the churches must disgorge it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 2, 1909 These historical references are but a few among the many that might be cited to show how intimately the Almighty associated the history of His chosen people with that of the mighty nations of ancient Egypt, Babylon, Persia and Greece - not doing His work in a corner, but so disposing events that the mighty and powerful peoples of the world in ages past have become agents for the dissemination of a knowledge of the true God, or at least torch-bearers that led the way to the repository of Divine truth. Willingly or unwillingly they did it, and in many noteworthy instances their wickedness was overruled for the advancement of the cause of truth, and the justification of God's dealings with our race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 16, 1909 The self-made wise are often sincere, but sincerity sometimes blindfolds truth. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in'this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: October 28, 1909 There are things, in connection with this subject, that would not perhaps, be proper to speak of here, before a large and mixed con gregation: but I want to sound a warning to the Latter-day Saints. The time has come for them to look after their children. Every device possible to the understanding and ingenuity of cun ning men, is being used for the purpose of diverting our children from the faith of the gospel and from the love of the truth. Every species of organization is being formed, both in our midst and abroad, having for its object the express purpose of leading astray the children of the Latter-day Saints, because they can't reach their parents. This is their argument: We cannot convert the adult Mormon people, but we may, perhaps, convert their children; we may lead away their children; we do not hope to lead away the Old people. They can't do it, except it may be, now and then, a man or woman who never did know anything parti cularly about the gospel. These, only, are they who can be led away from the truth; and our children can be led away from their parents and from the faith of the gospel, only when they are in a condition that they know not the truth for themselves, not having been taught it, not having had a proper example before them to impress it upon their minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: January 14, 1909 For nigh unto seventy years the voices of the servants of God have been heard declaring these things unto the people. Tens of thousands of missionaries and hundreds of thousands of lay mem bers of the Church have borne testimony to the world that God had manifested to them by the power of the Holy Ghost that these things are true. Now, the testimony of these thousands of witnesses must be either true or false. If it be true, then all those who reject it will come under the condemnation of the righteous Judge. But if the testimony of these witnesses be false, then condemnation will come upon all those who have borne it, and they will be denounced as deceivers and impostors. It will, therefore, be seen that the testimonies of the Latter-day Saints carry with them either sal vation or condemnation. This is a very serious matter, and we are pleased to know that it. Is beginning to be so considered by many people. A writer in a local paper a short time ago said that Mormonism had ceased to be considered a joke in this country. In the following we shall endeavor to prove that the testi mony of these witnesses is true. Why, the very nature of the testimony, it seems to us, is sufficient to do that. In the first place, why should Joseph Smith come out and declare to the world that, in answer to a fervent prayer which he sent up to the Father on high to point out to him the way of eternal life, the heavens were opened to him, and that in a glorious vision he beheld the Father and the Son; that the Lord conversed with him, and revealed unto him many great and important things pertaining to the salvation of the human family? This young man also declared with the greatest solemnity and soberness that angels ministered unto him from time to time; that they committed unto him a dispensation of the gospel, with authority to officiate in all its ordinances, and that he received from the Lord a commission to re-organize again upon the earth the Church of Christ. In testimony of the truth of these things the prophet sacrificed his life, as did also many of his devoted followers. What object could Joseph Smith have in telling such stories as these if they were not true? He could not expect to bring honor and glory to God by circulating falsehoods concerning Him; nor could he hope to gain the favor of heaven by deceiving his fellows. He could not fail to realize that his state ments, had they been false, would at the last day bring upon him the condemnation of God, who abhors lies and deception. Martin Harris was one of the men most deeply concerned in the alleged fraud, and though his name was stricken from the rolls of Church membership, he never could be induced to recant his testimony that Mormon ism originated just as its founder claimed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: June 17, 1909 Moralists and students of human nature are agreed that most vices are close kindred. 'users of tobacco are often users of liquor and other stimulants. It would be a rare thing to find a user of tobacco Who is not a user of intoxicating drinks or some stimulating drug. Those who profane the name of Deity are in most cases lax in morals in other ways, so that we may safely conclude that all evil has a common source, the evil that destroys the mind as well as the evil that destroys the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 9, 1908 He that receiveth you, receiveth me, ' said Jesus to His disciples 'and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.' Your friend will admit that the people who rejected the gospel taught by the Lord's divinely-commissioned apostles were just as much under condemnation as those who rejected it when preached by the Master Himself; he will also admit that those who received the gospel taught by the apostles received the same blessings from the Father as though they had received it from the lips of His only begotten Son; and when he admits these things, he must also admit that those who received baptism at the hands of the Lord's servants were just as acceptable to God as they would have been if baptized by His Son Jesus Christ. One day when Christ was teaching in the temple, the chief priests and the elders asked Him by what authority He taught the people. Turning to them He said: 'i also will ask you one thing The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or of. Men?' (matt. 21: 24 Now, had the Lord not considered baptism an essential ordinance, He would not have asked this question. It is only by admitting the essentiality of baptism that we can save our blessed Lord from the charge of having spoken foolishly on that occasion. Had baptism not been considered a saving ordinance of the gospel in the days of the Savior, these people could have turned to the Messiah and said, 'why ask us such a question? Baptism has nothing to do with our salvation, therefore it matters not to'us from whence it came, whether from heaven or of men.' Surely your friend must see that the chief priests and the elders are witnesses against him? Their silence testifies to the importance which the people attached to the ordin ance of baptism in the early days of Christianity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: January 28, 1909 Christians. He had sought for that faith in a number of the leading churches; but had sought in vain. And not only that, but the love which reigned in the hearts of the primitive saints, which found expression in their daily lives, and by which Christ said all men would know that they were His disciples, was also lacking. Like the woman in the Savior's parable who had lost a piece of money and who after diligent search had found it, so be, after searching for years for the primitive Christian faith and the primi tive Christian love, had at last found them in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His first testimony concerning the truth of the gospel taught by the Latter-day Saints was the testi mony of love which he saw the members of the Church bestow up on each other. So you see, brethren and sisters, we can all be missionaries. We cannot all leave our work and go out and distribute tracts; we cannot all stand up and preach, but this we all can do, we can love one another, and this will be a testimony to the world of the truth of Mormonism against which there can be no argument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: March 4, 1909 NO sooner had the young man, Joseph Smith, announced to the world that he had received a revelation from God than clergy and laity united in persecuting him. All manner Of falsehoods were coined and circulated about the inoffensive youth, in order to over throw his testimony. These failing, more extreme measures were resorted to: he was stripped and beaten, tarred and feathered and time after time thrown into prison. All this, remember, was done by people who called themselves Christians, and simply because the Object of their wrath continued to testify that God had heard and answered his prayer. But as none of these things were able to bring about the desired result, it was finally decided to put him to death. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. He and his beloved brother were murdered in cold blood by a mob, led by a minister of one of the sectarian churches. These were some Of the methods which were employed by Christians to get Latter-day Saints to renounce their faith and to put an end to Mormonism. A similar fate hefel many of the prophet's followers, while hundreds were driven from their homes, their crops destroyed and their property confiscated. They sought refuge in the land of the heathen, among savage Indians, and there they received much better treatment than they had received while dwelling among so called Christians. Heaven smiled upon them again; the blessings Of the Lord attended their labors, and in a little while they were once more comfortably settled in their own homes enjoying the good things of the earth and the still better things Of heaven. Think Of what happened then! Why with the record Of the terrible treatment which the Mormons had received before them, several religious societies in the East actually sent mission aries to Utah to convert them to their faith. Is it any wonder their work proved a miserable failure and that they were unable to make converts? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: February 18, 1909 According to the prophet, it is the knowledge of the Lord that is to bring about that blessed condition. By the knowledge of God he meant not only a knowledge of His personality, his charac ter and attributes, but also of all the principles of righteousness. To the Latter-day Saints, of all other people, these words give the greatest encouragement. They give us the assurance that the knowledge of the true God which has been restored to the World through the personal appearance of the Father and the Son to the Prophet Joseph Smith, shall ultimately fill the earth as the waters cover the sea; that the power and influence of the ever lasting gospel which has been restored to earth in these last days shall increase and spread abroad, that it shall prevail over the creeds and systems of men, and shall ultimately bring about uni versal happiness. What a pleasing thing it is to know, brethren and sisters, that the work in which we are engaged was founded by God Himself, that we are carrying out the Divine plan, that we are co-partners with our Father in heaven for the establishing of His kingdom in the earth, a kingdom which He has declared shall never be thrown down, nor given to another people. Knowing all this, there should not be the least room in the hearts or minds of any of us for doubt concerning the final triumph of the great latter-day work. To be sure, there is much in the world to discourage us and to cause us to almost doubt the Divine promises. The earth is full of ignorance, superstition and corruption but surely it is not beyond the power of Him who brought order out of chaos, light out of dark ness to redeem His children from their lost and fallen state? That is the work which He has set about to accomplish, and it shall be accomplished, for with the Almighty there is no such thing as failure. That is the work in which we are engaged, and with God Himself at the back of it, with the favor and blessing of heaven on its side its success is assured.
