It has arrested the attention of the wise and learned in both hemispheres, and they have exhausted their wisdom and learning in trying to overthrow it; but all their efforts have been in vain, the words of the prophet have been fulfilled to the letter the wisdom of their wise men has perished and the understanding of their prudent men has been hid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: November 5, 1908 Another lesson we can learn from this item of history is: that just as the Nephite vessel did not make progress while her captain was bound, neither can we make progress in the Church of Christ if we tie ourselves up by cords of our own weaving. These are some of the bands by which, if we bind ourselves, we shall stay our progress and go back in the way of life and salvation. It is for the Latter-day Saints to judge the standing Of these men. They have no occasion to sound their own praise, to bear testimony Of their own works; their lives are Open books to all the Latter-day Saints and to all the world. You know these men; you understand them; you have seen their labors; you understand the desires of their hearts, for you are familiar with them. The Lord has sustained these brethren in the positions to which He has called them, and He will continue to sustain them in these positions so long as they continue to be faithful before Him. If one of them should cease to be faithful and turn away from the right path, the consequences Of his own evil acts will fall upon him sooner or later, and the fruits Of his works and the desires of his heart will be made manifest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: November 12, 1908 It has been demonstrated times without number that men are capable of overcoming the fear of death. When their honor has been assailed, they have defied the monster; for the love of truth, of home and country they have despised it; others, in order to get revenge, have disregarded it; and tens of thousands bowed down with grief have prayed earnestly for it. It is strange that Christians should fear that which the passions of weak men have conquered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: October 28, 1909 There are things, in connection with this subject, that would not perhaps, be proper to speak of here, before a large and mixed con gregation: but I want to sound a warning to the Latter-day Saints. The time has come for them to look after their children. Every device possible to the understanding and ingenuity of cun ning men, is being used for the purpose of diverting our children from the faith of the gospel and from the love of the truth. Every species of organization is being formed, both in our midst and abroad, having for its object the express purpose of leading astray the children of the Latter-day Saints, because they can't reach their parents. This is their argument: We cannot convert the adult Mormon people, but we may, perhaps, convert their children; we may lead away their children; we do not hope to lead away the old people. They can't do it, except it may be, now and then, a man or woman who never did know anything parti cularly about the gospel. These, only, are they who can be led away from the truth; and our children can be led away from their parents and from the faith of the gospel, only when they are in a condition that they know not the truth for themselves, not having been taught it, not having had a proper example before them to impress it upon their minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 9, 1908 He that receiveth you, receiveth me, ' said Jesus to His disciples 'and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.' Your friend will admit that the people who rejected the gospel taught by the Lord's divinely-commissioned apostles were just as much under condemnation as those who rejected it when preached by the Master Himself; he will also admit that those who received the gospel taught by the apostles received the same blessings from the Father as though they had received it from the lips of His only begotten Son; and when he admits these things, he must also admit that those who received baptism at the hands of the Lord's servants were just as acceptable to God as they would have been if baptized by His Son Jesus Christ. One day when Christ was teaching in the temple, the chief priests and the elders asked Him by what authority He taught the people. Turning to them He said: 'i also will ask you one thing The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or of. Men?' (matt. 21: 24 Now, had the Lord not considered baptism an essential ordinance, He would not have asked this question. It is only by admitting the essentiality of baptism that we can save our blessed Lord from the charge of having spoken foolishly on that occasion. Had baptism not been considered a saving ordinance of the gospel in the days of the Savior, these people could have turned to the Messiah and said, 'why ask us such a question? Baptism has nothing to do with our salvation, therefore it matters not to'us from whence it came, whether from heaven or of men.' Surely your friend must see that the chief priests and the elders are witnesses against him? Their silence testifies to the importance which the people attached to the ordin ance of baptism in the early days of Christianity. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: January 30, 1908 While the Lord strongly denounced those who came to Him seeking for signs in order to gratify their idle curiosity, at the same time He was more than willing to give to those who were desirous of knowing the truth evidence that He was the Way, the Truth, and the Life. For example: When John sent two of his disciples to Christ, to ascertain if He were the One that was to come or if they were to look for another, the Lord, in order to convince them that He was the long-looked for Messiah, wrought a number of miracles before them, such as healing the sick, cleans ing lepers, and casting out evil spirits. Then turning to them, He told them to return to John and tell him what things they had seen and heard. On another occasion, when trying to persuade the people to believe in His Father, and also in Himself, He said, Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake (john 14: Here we see the Savior offering as evidence to the people of the Divinity of His mission the many mighty works which He had wrought among them, and declaring that if they rejected this evidence they would come under condemnation. While all the wonderful works wrought by the lowly Nazarene testify that He was what He professed to be - the Son of the living God - there is one which, perhaps more than all the rest, places the seal of Divine authenticity upon His mission. I refer to the casting out of evil spirits. That Christ rebuked evil spirits and cast them out of many that were possessed was acknowledged by even His bitterest enemies; but so hardened were their hearts with unbelief that they failed to see in this any evidence in favor of His Divinity. When requested to explain by what power the Savior cast out demons, they answered, By. Beelzebub, the prince of the devils. Then the Messiah caught them. So you say, said He, in substance, that I cast out devils by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of devils. N ow, let me point out to you the absurdity of such an argument. Can a house divided against itself stand? Is Satan divided against himself? Do devils cast out devils? What stronger evidence could anyone ask for than this? What logic! What sound reasoning! Surely the Lord's opponents must have felt ashamed of themselves when He thus exposed the weakness of their position. He had sought for that faith in a number of the leading churches; but had sought in vain. And not only that, but the love which reigned in the hearts of the primitive saints, which found expression in their daily lives, and by which Christ said all men would know that they were His disciples, was also lacking. Like the woman in the Savior's parable who had lost a piece of money and who after diligent search had found it, so he, after searching for years for the primitive Christian faith and the primi tive Christian love, had at last found them in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His first testimony concerning the truth of the gospel taught by the Latter-day Saints was the testi mony of love which he saw the members of the Church bestow up on each other. So you see, brethren and sisters, we can all be missionaries. We cannot all leave our work and go out and distribute tracts; we cannot all stand up and preach, but this we all can do, we can love one another, and this will be a testimony to the world of the truth of Mormonism against which there can be no argument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 2, 1908 Faith is the first principle of true religion. Without faith it is impossible for a man to please God. The apostle extols this great principle in his writings, and uses several illustrations to Show how individuals obtained Divine favor because of their faith. He speaks of Abraham, who believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness. We can see the necessity of Paul laying so much stress on faith; he knew that if he did not, first of all, persuade those people to believe in Christ they would not obey the gospel of the Redeemer. But notice how differently he writes to those who believed in God, and who had accepted His Son as their Savior and Redeemer. In an epistle to Titus, he said: This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. (titus 3: This clearly shows that Paul was not opposed to good works. On the contrary, he applauds them and instructs Titus to teach the people constantly to perform them In this he was simply reiterating the words of the Messiah, who said to His disciples: Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: May 21, 1908 The necessity, reward, and extent of duty are clearly shown to us by several examples that we can see and read of daily. It is clearly pointed out in the army or navy. Here we find that a man who does not do his duty is not only discharged, but is a dis grace to his country and looked down upon by all wherever he goes, and farther, in some countries is deprived of the privileges of citizenship. If an advancement is to be made the one to get the promotion is the one that has best performed his duty, and the higher that promotion the more necessary it will be that the recipient must have had many duties to perform, for we can see that it would be folly to advance a mere stoker to the position of an officer in one step. In business we also see that the one promoted is the one that has done his duty, and that those in responsible positions are they who have merited them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: December 3, 1908 Thousands of eyes were dimmed with tears that afternoon, and well they might. It was a pitiable sight to see the brave young Italian runner fail in sight of the goal, to see him meet with defeat just as victory was about to crown his brow. He had run well but he was unable to endure to the end. Had he been able to hold out a little longer he would have come off Victorious. While reflecting on that memorable event, I was reminded of the saying of an ancient writer: The race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, and also of the words of the Master, He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Brethren and sisters, what a solemn lesson we can learn from the result of that race! We, too, are running a race, the race of our lives. The prize is beyond price - glory, honor, immortality, eternal lives, thrones, principalities, powers, with the privilege of dwelling in the presence of God and the Lamb forever and ever. We may say we commenced the race when 'we became members of the Church of Christ. How are we running to-day Are we gaining ground or are we falling behind? Have we as bright hopes to-day as we had when we started? Are we running as those who expect to win, or do we feel like giving up in despair? Not a few who started out in this race of life dropped by the wayside, when they were almost within sight of the goal. Many men who figured prominently in the early history of the Church, who were highly favored of the Lord, who were permitted to behold wonderful manifestations of His power, and who it was verily believed would be able to maintain their positions till the end, fell down as did Dorando and lost the prize. They made a splendid showing at first, but they did not keep up the pace - they did not endure to the end. It was a sad sight to witness the collapse of the brave Italian athlete; it is ten thousand times worse to think of the fail ure of these, once our brethren in the Lord. As the race is not al ways to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither is salvation in the celestial kingdom of God to be gained by a few years' service, but by faithfully enduring to the end.
