Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: June 15, 1905 Higher Criticism is reaching many thinking people at the present time, and latter-day scripture offers pleasing and easy solutions to most things brought forward by the fearless manner in which scholars scrutinize the Bible. Doubt exists as to the authorship of various parts, there are evidences of copying from earlier writers, apparent interpolations and contradictions which they cannot reconcile with their idea of how the Lord ought to do things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 12, 1905 In all the useful and philanthropic enterprises thus enumerated, and in many more that cannot now be named, it was virtually the Church that took the lead; for Brigham Young, as President and trustee-in-trust, acted as the agent of the Church in investing its means and manipulating its revenues. In this capacity he built the Deseret Telegraph line, entirely with home capi tal and home labor, only a few years after the original telegraph line crossed the continent, and before the advent of the railroad. He and other leading Mormons helped to construct the Union Pacific and Central Pacific rail roads, which on May 10, 1869, made Promontory, Utah, their place of meeting and welding point between East and West. About this time also he took the initiative in organizing Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution, a mam moth concern designed to unify Mormon commercial interests in the face of impending fierce competition from the outside, resulting from the coming of the railroad. He even attempted to re-establish the United Order, and succeeded in part; though his greatest success in that direction was limited to the mighty Cc-operative movement of which he was the chief instigator and promoter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: May 18, 1905 In common with all books, the Book of Mormon has its spirit, produces its effects upon the minds of men; and as it claims to.be a work originally written and also translated through the inspiration of God, and deals primar ily with sacred things, it is to be expected that the spirit of this book will have not only a good, but even a divine influence; that it will be of a faith promoting, doubt-dispersing, comfort-bringing character. Its effect upon the minds of men, therefore, may be another test of its claims to a divine origin and to that test I now submit it. In his work entitled, My First Mission, the late President George Q. Cannon makes the following statement respecting the influence exerted over his spirit by reading the Book of Mormon under the trying conditions in which he was placed while serving as a missionary in the Hawaiian Islands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: August 10, 1905 There is a spiritually scientific and philosophic reason at the bottom of the demand for faith as the first condition of salvation. Unless we believe in God, He cannot do for us all that He desires to do. He cannot give what we are not able or not willing to receive. Therefore He says, Draw near unto Me, and I will draw near unto you. We draw near unto God by believing in Him, and if we truly believe in Him we will obey Him, thereby building upon the rock, and not upon the sand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: June 1, 1905 The Latter-day Saints in Chicago are thankful to the Lord for the goodly place they now possess in which to worship, and I bear witness that the means spent in Chicago for the obtaining Of a beautiful house to worship in was well spent. There are a number of members Of the Church who are students in Chicago, and they are proud to belong to that branch. They assist us in our work, and -we feel thankful for the labors they have performed and for the support they have given us. I believe that they ought to be encouraged; for they have gone out to battle with the world. One young man came to me three months ago. He had not been attending our services, and he felt, pos sibly, that he was not of much consequence. He roomed with a strong minded student, and thought he had so much work to do that he could not come and worship. After four months of isolation from the Church, by reading the many things that are written against us, he began to wonder if Zion was not astray. To-day, however, he feels better, having come under the influence of faithful students and Elders there. In southern Illinois we have purchased another small church in which to worship, and the honest in heart, also the firm minded among them, are pleased to think that they are going to have an energetic, enterprising people live with them. My brethren and sisters, I am glad to have the privilege Of representing such a noble band of young men and young women as are the missionaries in the Northern States mission. I believe that their souls are filled with a desire to keep the commandments of the Lord, and to spread a knowledge Of these commandments among their fellowmen. I have of ten thought, if the mothers could see their sons out there, perhaps knowing scarcely a passage of Scrip ture from memory, and reading the Bible, find that it sustains the teachings of their mothers, their hearts would rejoice to note how their minds broaden, and how their souls are filled with joy when they see that the Bible sustains the teachings they have received at their mother's knee, and in their Sunday schools, and other good places. Many Of our young men are not as well acquainted with the Bible as they are with the fact that their mothers have taught them to believe in God, to repent and be baptized, and then to have hands laid upon them for the gift of the Holy Ghost. When they read about these principles they understand them, and instead of coming back weak in the faith, they return with their faith strengthened, and with the teachings Of their parents confirmed by the doctrines Of the Holy Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: April 27, 1905 When I next regained my senses I was half a mile down the canyon from the place where I began to load, and was seated upon the logs, which were loaded in the exact position that I had designed to put them - three on the bottom and two on the top of the three. All were nicely bound with chains; I was sitting upon my Sheep-skin with the woolly side up; my whip was on my load carefully so it could not lose; my overcoat, home - made jeans, lay across the load in front of me, but within my reach. As I arose from my stupor, I spoke to my oxen and they stopped; and I viewed my surroundings with feelings that cannot be described. I quickly took my bearings, as I was familiar with every point in the canyon. Being quite cold, I essayed to jump from the load, and put on my overcoat; but to my surprise my limbs refused to do my bidding, they were so sore and my body was so badly bruised. I sat there and reflected for a few moments upon my peculiar situation. I looked around my load and found everything in place just as I would have put things myself. My axe was firmly bedded in the but end of one of the logs, and everything else was in first - class condition. After making another unsuccessful effort to get from the load, I reached my coat, put it on as best I could in a sitting posture, and started my oxen for home. I arrived safely about an hour later than my usual time. My wife was very uneasy about me on account of the lateness of my arrival, and because of the fear ever present with her during the whole day, that something would happen to my injury. She met me at the corral and carried me in her arms to the house, which she was then quite able to do, I weighing but a little over a hundred pounds. I was placed in a comfortable position on the bed, and she then cared for my team. For some days she carefully nursed me before I was able to move around the house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 67: July 13, 1905 We felt sorry for Mr. Macallum's ignorance and narrow-mindedness. Only a few hours before, a letter came from another city, sixty miles from there, from the president of a collage, full of thanks and kind words for a little favor I had done them, so you see, we are not altogether without friends. Well, that afternoon there was a great stir in government circles. I was before the police, the Centurian, and the Pasha, and a long order was written out and sealed for our immediate banishment. I asked to send a telegram to our minister in Constantinople, but that privilege was flatly refused me, ' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: November 23, 1905 Some who have been asked if willing to perform a mission have suggested that their call be postponed for a certain length of time in order to become better prepared. A number of such missionaries have been heard to admit that it would have been better for them if they had accepted the call at once; and some have, after asking for an extension of time, ' changed their minds and reported themselves ready to go without availing themselves of the time given for preparation, finding that the longer they remained the further they were from being ready. The late Apostle Parley P. Pratt, in his Autobiography, relates that upon one occasion he hesitated before starting upon a mission that had been as signed him. He was in debt, and was building a house, and desired to finish it before leaving. Before it was finished the house took fire and was burned. Elder Pratt then decided at once that he was ready to fulfill his mission. He looked upon his misfortune as a rebuke for not responding when first called. Upon deciding to go, his friends came to his assistance, his debts were can celled, and thus his way was made clear to perform his duty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: July 20, 1905 I take this opportunity to write a few lines to you, to let you know that I am in the land of the living, though I am a pilgrim on the earth, and a stranger in a strange land far from my home, and among those that seek my life because I preach the truth and those things that will save their lives in the day of tribulation. On the loth of July, in the forenoon, we landed in Liverpool. I had peculiar feelings when we landed, the Spirit of God burning in my breast; and at the same time I felt to covenant before God to live a new life, and to pray that the Lord would help me to do the same. We remained in Liverpool two days resting, and on Saturday the 22md, we took a coach for Preston. The distance being thirty-one miles, we arrived there at four in the afternoon. We unloaded our things, and Brother Fielding went to see his brother, and Brother Goodson went to get lodgings. All at once I looked up, and there was a large flag before me, with large gilded letters written thereon, Truth Will I said Amen, so let it be Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: September 2, 1909 It is not claimed, of course, that the Book of Mormon history and the developments of scientific research in the field of American antiquities are yet in agreement in every detail. Harmony _of this character is not to be expected either now or later, nor is it necessary that a universal harmony should be established before the inspiration of the Book of Mormon ought to be admitted. The existing agreement respecting quite a number of facts that no mortal knew in 1828 shows that Joseph Smith's knowledge of them was not derived from earthly sources, and hence must have been obtained just as he claims; and it follows that when there is a lack of complete harmony between the Book of Mormon account of certain matters and the statements of uninspired men, the latter are in error or fail to have full information in their possession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: September 7, 1916 To the elders and saints of the European mission. With a grateful heart I thank and praise the Lord that I have been accounted worthy, and have received the appointment, to succeed President Hyrum M. Smith as president of the European mission and editor and publisher of the Millennial Star, and that I, with those who accompanied me, have been preserved in our travels to this land. Our reception at Durham House, the headquarters of the Euro pean mission, by President and Sister Hyrum M. Smith, and others residing there, also by the conference presidents of the British mission, all of whom were on hand to greet us, was most cordial and affectionate. The opportunity of meeting the conference presidents and local saints in the several meetings and socials, held during the past few days, and our brief, but happy, associations with President Smith and family before their departure for their home in Zion, are greatly appreciated, and are a splendid introduction to my mission.
