This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 31, 1904 There have been a number of converts made who have joined themselves to adjacent stakes of Zion of which there are eight within the mission borders. Some members who have been slack in their duties have been persuaded to renew their diligence in the work. Many girls, who have drifted away from the Church and have married outside of its pale, have been found and their children have been blessed and baptized. In this way alone the establishment of the mission has done much good. The mission work has been and is still growing and, though few converts are being made, many have become warm friends and defenders of the Mormon Elders. Hospitality is characteristic of the people and the Elders have suffered little or no hardship when left to their mercy. God has abundantly blessed His servants in this mission. Comparatively few are met who give credence to the many stories which are being circulated about the Church. One old gentleman said to the writer the other day, If some of these people who are doing so much talking would go to Utah and see for themselves, as I have done, they would return with the notion that the Mormons are a pretty good people. Referring to the Senator Smoot agitation, he continued, Petitions are no guide to be governed by. I could go out and in a few hours get fifty names to a petition to hang a man. Liberality of thought and expression is everywhere heard. The people are willing to allow all others their own peculiar mode of worship and show no desire to molest them in it. They are content with the religion of their fathers and do not give themselves to worrying about their neighbors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: March 2, 1911 Salt Lake City! When the telegraph was first established here, I think one of the leading messages was, What hath God wrought! And I remembered that all the way on this quick journey from Liverpool to Salt Lake City. The first time I took that journey, I was thirty days on the sea in a rolling old tub, rocking back and forth on the sea, thirty days to New York; nine days on the train, two days up the river, 'and eleven weeks on the plains with an ox-team. N ow I came through in less than nine and one half days. What hath God wrought! What will He yet bring about? We are only at the beginning of the great things that God will bring to pass in this wonderful dispensation, the dispensation of the fulness of times. He has commenced this work, and He will carry it on. We are simply His messengers, His servants. I know this as well as I know I am standing here. He has been with me. It is by His power that I have been sustained in the work that I have been able to do; and so with my brethren. I rejoice in the prospects that lie before us. I know that this work will conquer: I know it will accomplish that which God has designed it to do, and I say this without any boasting, for without the Lord we could do but very little; but He is with us. Zion prospers, all is well, as we have been singing here this afternoon. We are gathered together as the Zion of our God, and God will bring forth Zion in its might and in its strength. We might say with Isaiah of old, who beheld it in vision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For many years he has been a counselor to President Ivins, of the Mexican colonies, and has been a bulwark of strength to the people there. His influence was also extended to the Mexican people who held him in the highest regard, both the humble natives and the government officials, so that his services were of inestimable value to his people in that land and the sense of their loss at this time will be keenly felt among them all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 21, 1904 God bless you. May He pour out His Spirit upon His people and help them to be wise and prudent in their words and in their actions. We say to you, keep the laws of God, and you should honor and keep the constitutional laws of men. That is what we say. We say to you, pay your debts and get out of debt. Pay your obligations and free yourselves from the bondage of obligation, if you can, and as soon as you can. We say to you, protect your own faith by Godly lives. We say to you, do unto others as you would have them do unto you - in righteousness. We say to you, keep the faith delivered to the Saints in the latter day. We say to you, honor God in your lives; honor and love Christ, the Son of God, in your hearts; uphold in honor and maintain respect for the name of Joseph Smith, the Prophet of God, who was instrumental in laying the foundation of this great latter-day work. Do not turn away at every wind of doctrine or be swayed by the cunning and craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to de ceive. Know the truth for yourselves. Walk in the light as Christ is in the light, and you will have fellowship with Him, and then the blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse you from all sin. God bless you to this end is my humble prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 17, 1904 Laboring among such a people we naturally have strong desires to use to the best advantage the means provided to bring before them the principles of eternal life. Through the system we have established, practically all our force is engaged in active missionary work. We have no local conference head quarters. These have been discontinued and the Elders who formerly were kept at these places are now among the people doing active service. There are conference records to be kept, history to be recorded, and mail to be for warded to the Elders in their fields of labor, which is now done for all the conferences by two experienced Elders, having their office in the mission building. Each conference, of which there are eight in the mission, is presided over by a president and counselor, the latter also acting in the capacity of confer ence superintendent of Sunday schools. The president of the conference has general supervision of all the work in his conference, the superintendent of Sunday schools of the Sunday school work. Together they are expected to visit all the Elders at least twice between each semi-annual conference held in the mission, and as many of the Saints and investigators as time will permit. During these visits they go with the Elders among the people, observe their work, encourage them in the faithful performance of their duties, assist them in their studies, and make suggestions for improvement. Weekly, the confer ence president receives statistical and written reports from the Elders laboring under his direction and every two weeks writes them a letter of encourage ment and instruction. Each month he writes the history of the conference, which is sent to the conference secretaries for recording. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 14, 1904 Our beloved President, Joseph F. Smith, was among some of those who came in those early days. He was only a boy between fifteen and sixteen years of age. He, too, received the language in a remarkably short time, and retains it to a marked degree even to this day. It is music to those who understand the language to hear him speak. His pronunciation is so nearly per feet. The Lord constantly blessed the work of the Elders until at the time Brother. Cannon returned, in four years, there were upwards of four thousand members of the Church on the Islands, and the work has progressed from year to year. Missionaries have continued to come and return until many thou sands of this branch of the house of Israel have been led into the waters of baptism, and many thousands have had the Holy Priesthood conferred upon them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: May 26, 1904 Another question for Christians. A few years ago, a boy in his innocent years claimed to have walked and talked with God. If you look upon such a thing as absurd, why do you take so much means and lose so much breath over his doctrines and teachings? Why have you resorted to everything known to man to persecute his followers and to destroy his work? Why are those Mormons of western America giving you so much trouble, why are they seemingly worrying the world? If they are deluded, why do you not go among them as real Christians and say to them: Here, I am thy brother, and you are mine, Let us talk our ideas over and accept each others truths and good teachings. 'do you not know that Truth will always overcome Error when they meet face to face? If the Saints of the Last days have nothing good, then why is it that no people are more cleanly in their daily lives and habits; why is it that among all the states of the Union, Utah ranks third in educa tion? If they have nothing good, why is it that they accept the divine injunction, The glory of God is intelligence There must be a mistake somewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: November 10, 1904 One of the essentials, the leading essential, is the proper appreciation of the doctrines of the Gospel of J esus Christ. There is that which will bring life, and joy, and happiness forever. You should not esteem it lightly, nor deny its messengers a hearing. They stand ready at your doors to teach it you, freely and without cost. Despise them not, nor spurn their message. Though its adoption may bring you some annoyance, in the final review of your life it will act as a well of living water springing up unto everlasting life. You may think that the Latter-day Saints have not a message worth your while; you have more important things. I tell you that to fail to hear them, to avoid or refuse entertaining them, and to neglect to listen to and obey the message which they bear, is precious opportunity lost, which, one day, in the final, the home review of the experiences of your life, will bring you sorrow and regret. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: January 14, 1904 If the young people were taught these things in the spirit thereof, and were induced by example and proper family government, in love, to practice them, no complaint would need be made about neglect of duty, and hoodlumism. But this cannot be done unless parents themselves are exemplary, and this, evidently, they are not always. There are idlers among them, also; they are not seeking earnestly the riches of eternity, but their eyes are full of greedi ness they Spend their time and thoughts upon material things. They do not pray; they are worldly in mind, in habits and actions. The incorrigibility of the children is due to their carelessness, and some day there will be a wakening, and parents will realize the fearful, awful fact, that the sins of their children are resting upon their heads. I wish my voice could be heard in every family in Zion. Lovingly, and yet as firmly as if my soul's salvation depended upon it, I would repeat to every father and mother the words of the Lord to Zion: These things ought not to be; and must be done away from among them; and a commandment I give unto them, that he that observeth not his prayers before the Lord in the season thereof, let him be had in remembrance before the judge of my people. These sayings are true and faithful; therefore transgress them not, neither take therefrom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: December 15, 1904 Joseph Smith taught, and the Book of Mormon teaches, that innocent children, who die before arriving at the age of accountability, are redeemed by the blood of the Savior. This doctrine was also set down as a heresy, and ministers said that thousands of children were in hell, as a result of some body's failure to secure for' them the baptismal ordinance. This doctrine, denounced in the Book of Mormon as an abomination in the sight of God, was strenuously taught by one faction of Christians for more than two hundred and fifty years. Now comes the great National Convention of Presbyterians, held in Los Angeles in 1903, and officially discards the doctrine of infant damnation as being untrue, unscriptural, unmerciful, inconsistent and unjust. We are glad to see them make a little closer approximation to the truth. Had they listened to and heeded the voice of an inspired prophet, they might have dispensed with this false and cruel dogma three-quarters of a century ago.
