Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: June 30, 1904 About two years ago Dr. James L. Hughes, the eminent Canadian educator, visited Utah, and gave a series of lectures to the school teachers of the state at their convention in Salt Lake City. Dr. Hughes is well known in the educational circles of Canada and the United States, not only by his lectures, but by his very helpful books on teaching. That the teachers of Utah enjoyed his society as much as he enjoyed theirs, can be vouched for by the present associate editor of the star, as he had the privilege of meeting him and listen ing to his lectures. Recently, Dr. Hughes contributed an article to the Canadian Magazine, which he calls, My Misconceptions Regarding the Mormons. The article is here reproduced. Recently in New York City there was a dispute between the masons and the electricians as to which should place certain holes in the walls to receive the electric wires. The contention stopped the work and the con tractors, by the rules of the labor union, were compelled to pay the men wages while the work was stopped and the contention was under way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 22, 1903 I desire to say to this congregation that the work of the Lord, to the best of my knowledge, has continued to grow and spread since our last conference, last April, six months ago. I can see no evidence of weakness, or of weaken ing among the Latter-day Saints. Everywhere that I have had the pleasure and Opportunity of traveling to visit the people, we have found them earnest in their work, earnest in their faith, earnest in their devotion to the kingdom of God in the earth, and living according to the knowledge that they possess, agreeable to the will of the Father, as it has been made known to them. There have been great improvements. We 'have built and completed and dedicated many houses of worship throughout the various stakes of Zion during the six months that have passed. There are many more in the course of erection, and many will no doubt be completed and dedicated and ready for the service of the people before we shall assemble again six months hence. This book was released on 2017-02-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: August, 1903 On the way to the hotel We were surprised and interested by a custom that has since grown very familiar to us. Our cabman was evidently religious (though he did not scruple at demanding over twice the agreed and regular price at the end of the drive), and whenever he passed a church or shrine in the street he took off his strange-looking hat with his left hand, and made the sign of the cross with the right by touching his forehead, lower part of chest and shoulders. The falling rain did not deter him. Naturally this is an awkward thing for drivers to do, and many times they drop their reins for the moment while they attend to their worship. A curious coincidence at the hotel was that President Lyman found, shortly after becoming located, that in the adjoining room on one side Elder John F. Home was living and on the other Elder Kenneth Crismon had taken up his abode. These Elders from Germany had attended the dedication services at Christiania, and later visited Stockholm, thence sailing to St. Petersburg. Religious conditions among the Russians are naturally the most interesting subject to us, and to learn these was one of 'the motives President Lyman had for making the journey. There are many and conflicting currents of religion here; many that are deep and hidden which are not learned or understood without intimate association with the people. But in few places is it possible to see and at least partly understand the religion of the great majority. We went into the Kasan cathedral soon after arriving, and there saw a scene of most active worship. Russian churches have no seats, and there is room for the devotee to kneel or prostrate himself if he wishes. People of all classes were there. Beggars in their rags (their purpose being to obtain charity), the lame, the halt, the blind, laboring people, richly clad men and women, officers of the army, all kissed the same icons, made the cross and bowed before the images, and in some cases kneeled and touched their foreheads to the floor. One poor fellow, evidently with a heavy weight on his conscience, we noticed when we entered, making the cross, kneeling, bowing to the floor and rising again only to repeat the movements. During the whole time we were there he continued. The only thing to break the monotony of it was that some times he remained down for a few moments and smote his breast with his hand. The churches are open all day and the people come in and usually go out after a few moments' worship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: September 3, 1903 Now, in relation to the government of our Church; a word or two in order that we may understand it. In the first place, I lay down the principle, which I think is an infallible one - one that we must be governed by, - that is, that the priesthood after the order of the Son of God is the ruling, presiding, authority in the Church. It is divided into its various parts - the Melchizedek and the Aaronic - and all the quorums or councils are organized in the Church, each with special duties and special callings not clashing with each other, but all harmonious and united. In other words, there is no government in the Church of Jesus Christ separate and apart, above, or outside of, the holy priesthood or its authority. We have our Relief Societies, Mutual Improve ment associations, Primary associations, and Sunday schools, and we may organize, if we choose, associations for self-protection, and self-help among ourselves, not subject to our enemies, but for our good and the good of our people, but these organizations are not quorums or councils of the priesthood, but are auxiliary to, and under it; organized by virtue of the holy priesthood. They are not outside of, nor above it, nor beyond its reach. They acknowledge the principle of the holy priesthood. Wherever they are they always exist with the view of accomplishing some good; some soul's salvation temporal or spiritual. When we have a Relief Society, it is thus organized. It has its president and other officers, for the complete and perfect accomplishment of the purposes of its organization. When it meets, it proceeds as an independent organization, always mindful of the fact that it is such, by virtue of the authority of the holy priesthood which God has instituted. If the president of the stake comes into a meeting of the Relief Society, the sisters, through their president, would at once pay deference to him; would consult and advise with him, and receive directions from the presiding head. That head is the Bishop, in the ward, the president, in the stake, the presidency of the Church, in all the Church. The Young Ladies' and Young Men's associations, the Primary associations, and the Sunday schools are the same. All are under the same head, and the same rules apply to each. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: July 9, 1903 In our dependence and according to our intelligence we sought to obey the law, whatever it might have been. This desire to become obedient also became a part of us, an inclination in our natures, the result of dependency. This condition has remained with us throughout our existence, for we are ever under a higher power. The desire to be obedient has at several periods in the ages flagged, owing to our own free Will and lack of knowledge of the yet latent higher intelligence which we are all striving to attain. But that spark of divinity which lies deep within our hearts lights us to obedience and keeps us, to a certain degree in the law. When Adam and the children of men became mortal a definite remembrance of their earlier existence was withheld from them, but the inclinations of their natures remained with them, and instincts, or higher feelings than instincts, whispered that they were from a divine source and subjects of a greater power. They also felt that a great plan or code of laws was prepared for them to follow. It was plain that in this plan there should be no contradiction. If having its origin with God, it must be perfect and the same, or a part of the same, arranged in the beginning. They were anxious to know the law, and through revelation they obtained a knowledge of it. They learned that they had been called to enter mortality and pass through it. They had known it before but had now no remembrance of that knowledge. Birth of the flesh is but obeying the great law long before decreed. It is that law which opens the door to mortality and grants citizenship in the same. All who are born prove, by their birth, that they have obeyed God's laws. Those who have not obeyed are devils and are denied the right of having mortal bodies. Again, birth is the entrance to a high school of preparation for future greatness. In this school the same obedience is required as was always required after a knowledge of the laws is obtained. Gradually these laws have been com prehended and gradually fulfilled. Our inner being, our conscience, tells us that birth is right, a holy law that permits no disrespect, and we accept it without question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: June 4, 1903 Mormon characters to Professor Charles Anthon, of New York, by Martin Harris. But it is well to remember that complete details of this transaction, and the statement of each side of the case, are given in Orson Pratt's Works (salt Lake edition), pages 295-7. A Similar account in briefer form is given in The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, vol. I, chap. 3, and in the Life of Joseph Smith, Cannon, chap. 8. The thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel deals almost entirely with the great Latter-day work and might be made the subject of volumes of oommen taries. A few of the verses (16-19) distinctly foreshadow the writing and bringing forth of the Book of Mormon. These have been so fully discussed by almost every preacher and writer of our Church that the merest reference to them seems superfluous, and nothing can be added to what has already been said: Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: and join them one to another into one Stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these? Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: July 16, 1903 Standing in the midst of the family of spiritual beings in heaven before this world was ready for mortal habitation, God recognized that there were some more advanced than others, more worthy of special trust and assignment to responsible stations on earth. These, said He, I will make my rulers. What was true of individuals as to their calling to particular work was true also in a collective sense of tribes and races. Hence we find that preferment was given to a chosen group of spirits who were assigned to come through a Special lineage - the lineage of faithful Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. These are known on earth as the children of Israel. From the commencement of human history they were cared for in the designs of the Creator, for When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel (deut. Xxx'ii: Not only. Does this passage from Moses' song of praise show the foreknow ledge of the Father as to the number of His offspring who should tabernacle as Israelites, but it makes clear that in His plans respecting this earth a position so important was assigned to the chosen people that the earth was divided among those who were to possess it in a way that would leave sufficient space in the best lands for the children of Israel to be nurtured and sustained. Egypt was the cradle and Palestine the nursery of this chosen people. The world has become their dwelling place. In ways most marvelous the Almighty gave them possession of the land of Canaan. He did it with manifestations of power so grand that one would have thought the people never could have forsaken the God who thus had blessed them. But they did. It was known that they would. There was a design even in their apostasy. St. Paul says that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the times of the Gentiles be come in (rom. Xi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: January 22, 1903 It would be better if every Elder who is a father rose to the dignity of his position, and officiated in his holy office within his family organization. He may call to his aid any others who are worthy holders of the requisite author ity in the Priesthood, but it is his privilege to stand as the head of his house hold, and to perform the ordinances pertaining to his family. The question arises, and has recently been presented in specific form, If an Elder performs the ordinance of naming and blessing his own child at home, is it necessary that the ordinance be repeated in the ward meeting? We answer, No the father's blessing is authoritative, proper, and sufficient. But every such case must be promptly reported to the Bishop of the ward, who will direct the clerk to make full and proper record of the matter, entering the name of the child, with date of birth and blessing, and all data as to parentage, etc., on the books of the ward. It is the duty of the Teachers and Priests in their house to house visitations among the people to see that all such reports are fully and promptly made. The repetition of the ordinance of naming and blessing children tends to diminish our regard for the authority and sanctity attending the father's blessing within the household.
