Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: November 12, 1903 The speaker read a passage from the eleventh chapter of Deuteronomy and another from a section of the Doctrine and Covenants to show that the teach ings of the authorities of the Church to-day are the same as have always been taught by the servants of God. He admonished the Saints to daily read a chapter of the Bible, Book of Mormon, or the other standard Church works before their families. He felt anxious that we should impress the world with the fact that we love the Savior. He spoke of the influence of education, not only of the Church schools, but also of the district schools. He advised the Saints to send their children to the district schools, and not take them out at the sixth or seventh grade. He hoped that the Saints would see that their children are properly educated. He bore his testimony to the truth. The choir then sang, We thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet, and benedic tion was pronounced by Elder David H. Cannon. President Lyman followed, speaking upon practical religion, stating that just as a clean body is admirable in this life, so will a clean spirit be admirable in this life and in the'life to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 8, 1903 Then again these mobs are growing rapidly in numbers so that those engaged in torturing and hanging number thousands when formerly the mob did not consist of more than forty or fifty men. President Roosevelt gave the best summary of the situation that has yet appeared when he said: The spirit of lawlessness grows with what it feeds on, and when mobs with impunity lynch criminals for one crime, they are certain to begin to lynch real or alleged criminals for other causes. Nobody in the world deplores more than do the Latter-day Saints the pre valence and brutality of mob violence. If mob violence in this country did not have its origin in the drivings and persecutions of the Latter-day Saints, it is certain that no class of people in this country have suffered more and longer from the lawlessness of the mob than have the Latter-day Saints. For more than half a century the Mormons have been the victims of lawless mob violence against which very little has been said, for the chief reason that the victims had been so long pursued by hatred and prejudice that the world had been taught to withdraw all its sympathy from them. Whipping, driving, and shooting Mormon Elders in the south called forth no anxiety and little objection upon the part of the press; and the Mormon Elder, pure and up right in his life, has received less sympathy and protest in his favor than the negro ravisher who deserved, perhaps, the punishment, however inexcusable the method of executing it. It is a precious boon to stand with all men face to face equal before the law and to live under a government where the orderly and just execution of the law prevails. We have always believed as a people that those who mobbed us, and that the country at large which acquiesced in mob violence were sowing to the wind and that some day the country would reap the whirlwind. That the prevalence of mob violence is a direct menace to the institutions of our country no one need to doubt who reads the comments of the press upon the subject. He was opposed on every side; but he defended each principle of the Gospel as best he could, and in so doing he became stronger in his belief that the Gospel was true that it was from God. The more he was opposed the harder he worked; every family in the village was furnished with tracts. He struggled on hard and faithfully, but all to no avail. He could not understand it; he had not been used to such treatment. His opinion in the past had always been respected; in fact nothing of importance would be undertaken without first consulting him about it, but now instead of the people coming to him they actually shunned him. His wife, too, opposed and tried to persuade him to let the whole matter drop and not worry about it. In these dark hours he learned to pray; and often he would leave his work, step into the little forest adjoining his land and pour out his soul to Him who knows our thoughts, our desires, our sorrows, our joys, our all. His prayers were answered; he received the peace and comfort of mind that he sought - an assurance of the divinity of the Gospel. He was baptized and again visited his neighbors, bearing them his testimony, but they would not listen. He then decided that he would say no more, only when he was asked; but that he would show, his fellowmen by his example that he was a better man than before he had heard the Gospel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: June 11, 1903 Church accepted the plural marriage doctrine as brought to light by Joseph Smith the Seer. The denials made by President John Taylor, for instance, which are often cited in this connection, had direct reference to the stories set on foot because of Bennett's depravity, and contained not one syllable against celestial or plural marriage as' adopted by the Church. The licentious practice thus denounced was as far from the pure principle revealed from on high as the slime of the gutter is from the glistening snow on the summits of our lofty mountain peaks. It is difficult to convince the prejudiced mind that any but base intents and impure desires prompted the practice of plural marriage, but nevertheless it was entered into, God knows, with the highest religious and moral motives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: July 16, 1903 Standing in the midst of the family of spiritual beings in heaven before this world was ready for mortal habitation, God recognized that there were some more advanced than others, more worthy of special trust and assignment to responsible stations on earth. These, said He, I will make my rulers. What was true of individuals as to their calling to particular work was true also in a collective sense of tribes and races. Hence we find that preferment was given to a chosen group of spirits who were assigned to come through a Special lineage - the lineage of faithful Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. These are known on earth as the children of Israel. From the commencement of human history they were cared for in the designs of the Creator, for When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel (deut. Xxx'ii: Not only. Does this passage from Moses' song of praise show the foreknow ledge of the Father as to the number of His offspring who should tabernacle as Israelites, but it makes clear that in His plans respecting this earth a position so important was assigned to the chosen people that the earth was divided among those who were to possess it in a way that would leave sufficient space in the best lands for the children of Israel to be nurtured and sustained. Egypt was the cradle and Palestine the nursery of this chosen people. The world has become their dwelling place. In ways most marvelous the Almighty gave them possession of the land of Canaan. He did it with manifestations of power so grand that one would have thought the people never could have forsaken the God who thus had blessed them. But they did. It was known that they would. There was a design even in their apostasy. St. Paul says that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the times of the Gentiles be come in (rom. Xi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: April 23, 1903 Now, I do not desire to prolong my remarks this morning. I pray God to bless those who may speak to us and inspire them to say those things that will be instructive and beneficial, and that we all may enjoy that measure of the spirit of intelligence that we may divine rightly the word of truth, and that we all may receive meat in due season. That God may grant us these privileges and blessings is my prayer, in the name of Jesus. Amen. Elder seymour B. Young, of the First Seven Presidents of Seventies, was the next speaker. He was grateful to the Lord for the prosperity that attends the Saints everywhere. He had a testimony to bear - the same testimony that he had always borne. He rejoiced in the fact that our young people had so many opportunities of advancement and culture. Yet he regretted that there was so little manual training in our system of education. President Brigham Young used to teach this idea as a necessary part of every educational system. In speaking thus, Elder Young explained that he was not inclined to find fault with what the noble and devoted men and women were doing for our young people, both in our Church schools and in the auxiliary organizations of the Church. But he felt nevertheless that we ought to do more in the way of teaching manual training than we do. Our schools will always remain incomplete until they have departments where the mechanical arts are taught. Throughout our communities the Saints are in comparative comfort. In our outlying settlements it is a very rare thing to find an indigent person. There are exceptions to that in this city, for which there are sufficient reasons. But on the whole our people are very prosperous. And there are many evi deuces that there is improvement. We can see, in every stake, that the words of our leaders have been heeded. Especially is this the case with respect to the principle of tithing. The blessings of the Lord have been poured out upon the people yery markedly. Along with this prosperity, however, there may be noted an increase of. Op position. It has always been true that where the people of God are prosperous the powers of evil are more active. The Saints must expect, therefore, that Satan and his hosts will be the more alert. The powers of darkness are always arrayed against the power of light. Recently we have had an example of this in the treatment some of our missionaries have received in our own country. The speaker quoted a saying of the Prophet Joseph Smith to the effect that this antagonism would continue until the Lord overthrows the power of the devil. The only important consideration for us in this respect is that we de termine to withstand all the attacks made by the adversary of good. The Prophet Joseph was especially tried; and so were those men who succeeded him. No one can point to these and say truthfully that they ever failed in their allegiance to the Lord. The only reason Why they were persecuted was that they had been called of the Lord and they proved true to this sacred trust only because they knew their calling to be of God. Knowing this, they were strong in the power of the Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: November 5, 1903 Elder Edward J. Wood, president of the Alberta stake, reported that stake as being in a very prosperous condition. He spoke of the necessity of prayer. Members of the Temple choir then sang a quartet selection. Elder Rulon S. Wells, one of the Seven Presidents of Seventies, took for his text, By their fruits ye shall know them, and spoke of the good works of the Latter-day Saints and bore his testimony. Elder Heber S. Allen, of the Taylor stake of Zion, recently organized from the Alberta stake, spoke of the great success the Latter-day Saints had met with in Canada. Elder Hyrum M. Smith, of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, spoke of the assurance the Latter-day Saints have that the work in which they are eu gaged is of God. He remarked that a certain minister in this city had com plained that if a man was once a Mormon he was of no use in his church if converted, as the doctrines of Mormonism hung to him as long as he lived. The speaker said that if the ministers succeeded in Winning away any who belong to our faith they would only strengthen the Church and weaken their own organizations, as only those who were weak in the faith or who had com mitted sin would leave the faith. This was not the kind of converts the Mormons were making in Christendom, as those who accepted the Gospel were among the very best members of their churches. Elder Matthias F. Cowley, of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, spoke of the necessity of the Saints teaching their children the principles of the Gospel and of setting them good examples to follow. He also bore his testimony. The choir sang, Now we'll sing with one accord. The benediction was offered by Elder Stephen L. Chipman. But cards do not stand alone in their enticement to evil. Any game that ultimately leads to questionable Society, because it is the chief pleasures of such society, should be excluded from the home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 I have chosen this particular passage from many others which bear upon the same subject and have submitted these comments to emphasise one of the greatest impelling powers behind the great missionary movement of the Church of Christ, viz. To announce to all the world that Jesus Christ has again delegated the same authority to men, which He gave to His former apostles, and has once more established His Church upon earth. As the Saviour authoritatively commissioned His apostles of old, so has He authoritatively commissioned men to-(lay. Missionaries are abroad declaring this wonderful message. Equal to this as an impelling force is the Church membership's realisation of the transforming power of the Gospel. Every true member knows that obedience to the Gospel brings to individuals new motives, new ideals, new assurance that it will produce ideal conditions in society and bring to each nation that new life and love of service which will eventually establish the long-hoped-for peace and good w ill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: February 13, 1908 I have pursued the same course with other people, with similar results. I think we should teach the people the principles of the gospel just as little children are taught in the schools - line upon line and precept upon precept. The child is taught a few letters at a time; when he has learned them thoroughly, he is taught a few more, and so on till he masters the entire alphabet.
