Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 8, 1903 Then again these mobs are growing rapidly in numbers so that those engaged in torturing and hanging number thousands when formerly the mob did not consist of more than forty or fifty men. President Roosevelt gave the best summary of the situation that has yet appeared when he said: The spirit of lawlessness grows with what it feeds on, and when mobs with impunity lynch criminals for one crime, they are certain to begin to lynch real or alleged criminals for other causes. Nobody in the world deplores more than do the Latter-day Saints the pre valence and brutality of mob violence. If mob violence in this country did not have its origin in the drivings and persecutions of the Latter-day Saints, it is certain that no class of people in this country have suffered more and longer from the lawlessness of the mob than have the Latter-day Saints. For more than half a century the Mormons have been the victims of lawless mob violence against which very little has been said, for the chief reason that the victims had been so long pursued by hatred and prejudice that the world had been taught to withdraw all its sympathy from them. Whipping, driving, and shooting Mormon Elders in the south called forth no anxiety and little objection upon the part of the press; and the Mormon Elder, pure and up right in his life, has received less sympathy and protest in his favor than the negro ravisher who deserved, perhaps, the punishment, however inexcusable the method of executing it. It is a precious boon to stand with all men face to face equal before the law and to live under a government where the orderly and just execution of the law prevails. We have always believed as a people that those who mobbed us, and that the country at large which acquiesced in mob violence were sowing to the wind and that some day the country would reap the whirlwind. That the prevalence of mob violence is a direct menace to the institutions of our country no one need to doubt who reads the comments of the press upon the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: January 22, 1903 It would be better if every Elder who is a father rose to the dignity of his position, and officiated in his holy office within his family organization. He may call to his aid any others who are worthy holders of the requisite author ity in the Priesthood, but it is his privilege to stand as the head of his house hold, and to perform the ordinances pertaining to his family. The question arises, and has recently been presented in specific form, If an Elder performs the ordinance of naming and blessing his own child at home, is it necessary that the ordinance be repeated in the ward meeting? We answer, No the father's blessing is authoritative, proper, and sufficient. But every such case must be promptly reported to the Bishop of the ward, who will direct the clerk to make full and proper record of the matter, entering the name of the child, with date of birth and blessing, and all data as to parentage, etc., on the books of the ward. It is the duty of the Teachers and Priests in their house to house visitations among the people to see that all such reports are fully and promptly made. The repetition of the ordinance of naming and blessing children tends to diminish our regard for the authority and sanctity attending the father's blessing within the household. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: June 11, 1903 Church accepted the plural marriage doctrine as brought to light by Joseph Smith the Seer. The denials made by President John Taylor, for instance, which are often cited in this connection, had direct reference to the stories set on foot because of Bennett's depravity, and contained not one syllable against celestial or plural marriage as' adopted by the Church. The licentious practice thus denounced was as far from the pure principle revealed from on high as the slime of the gutter is from the glistening snow on the summits of our lofty mountain peaks. It is difficult to convince the prejudiced mind that any but base intents and impure desires prompted the practice of plural marriage, but nevertheless it was entered into, God knows, with the highest religious and moral motives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 15, 1903 We like to see a man in earnest, ambitious, painstaking in any grade of occupation, to be master of his art or calling and to aim at excellence and advancement wherever practicable. This recalls a conversation the writer had with a street sweeper in London where so many are employed. He was clever in his sphere and prided himself upon his proficiency. Another of his class was at work close by when to our surprise the first one addressed said, Oh, he is a good plain sweeper, but then you know he cannot sweep around a lamp-post. We smiled, little dreaming that in this, the apparently lowest of all manual labor, there were degrees of ability, known perhaps only to the initiated or expert. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, 1903, Vol. 65 But it is further taught in this brief statement that it is folly to pay homage to the sun, the stars, to beasts or imitations of objects of nature, because all is created by the order of an intelligent Being far above and superior to all that has been created. Why not worship the Creator, instead of the creature? And everywhere, where this account of creation is accepted as true, divine worship is directed toward the true Godhead. Did ever a mere human sentence produce such an effect upon human history? Then it is very clear that the author of the Mosaic account, even if he was not aware of all that modern science knows, or claims to know about the universe, yet stated the absolute truth in all the matters of Which he spoke. And it ought to be clear that he could not have obtained his information from contemporary human sources. In Genesis the universe is not brought into existence instantaneously. There is a gradual unfolding, from the day the natural forces are set in motion until the earth is completed and made fit to be a human habitation. The entire narrative is in harmony with the most modern ideas on this subject. We see in this venerable account brought before our view, first the simplest forms of matter, all in apparent confusion, then the gradual arrangement into suitable abodes for living beings, and. Then these living beings rising higher and higher in the scale. And finally man is introduced, as the image of the Creator, the ruler of all the creatures upon the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: May 28, 1903 Even the inanimate stones are indestructible. Drop a 'pebble into the water. It disappears. But is its power dead? (notice those small ripples gathering in rings about the spot where the rock-sank. See how they swell and swell until they set every object on the surface of the lake more or less in motion. Even the earth particles on the water's edge vibrate to the' waves coming from the center of the pond. So it is with us. The earthly may be laid in the tomb, but the influence remains above ground, and it will ripple in waves of good or bad to the very shores of infinity. Think of the millions of sunbeams chained down in the black dungeons of the earth. Small 'and ih consequential as they seem, they will one daybreak forth from their fetters and burn in ten thousand forge-fires of progress. But this is no part bf our story. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: November 26, 1903 Many of our devoted missionaries are valiantly striving to do their best, and to make their best better day by day; great is and greater yet shall be their reward. Others are lacking in energy and effort; their work is done, if at all, in a half-spirited way, and their thoughts are ever running ahead to the time of their release and return. To those of the first class the days are all too short and the months too few for the exalted labors in which they find such genuine satisfaction and happi ness. To the others the days drag and the weeks are burdensome. Saddening as it is to make the declaration, it is nevertheless true that there are idlers in the vineyard, who, under the spell of indolence and negligence, let the vines in their care go unpruned and untended. For such there is little satisfaction and less true happiness in the work that means so much for them and for others. It is a matter of righteous pride and pure ambition among our young people - young men particularly - to hold a missionary's certificate of appoint ment, with its appended honorable release. To have won such honestly the holder must have been valiant while in the service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
