Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: Thursday, December 11, 1902 The important position occupied by that Being who stands at the head of the human race, ought to be recognized by all his posterity. It was on the principle of the patriarchal order, in which the father is the priest and chief of the family, and will hold that place to all eternity, that President Young proclaimed the supremacy of that person who is our Father and our God, because of our personal relationship to him. Michael who, in his earthly career was Adam, was one of the three exalted persons who engaged in the formation of this globe. Elohim, Jehovah and Michael were associated in that mighty work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: October 16, 1902 This shows that endless, eternal, everlasting and similar terms indicate the hind not the duration of punishment. As God IS eternal, so are His laws and their appropriate rewards and punishments. They ever exist to inspire righteousness and correct evil, to bless the faithful and inflict retribution upon the disobedient. Under this everlasting code individuals will be rewarded or punished according to deeds done in the body. Thus the justice of God is vindicated and a foundation is laid for the larger hope that the Latter-day Saints have so long advocated, and that is now so rapidly gaining favor among Christian people. The Savior taught that the unfaithful and disobedient would be beaten with many stripes, while those less blameworthy would receive few stripes (luke xii: 47 St. Paul says God will render to every man according to his deeds (rom. Ii: St. John adds his testimony to the same effect (rev. Xx': 12, So do Jeremiah (chaps. Xvii: 10; xxxii: 19) and others. If these passages mean anything, they mean that every man will receive absolute justice; no more, no less. Each disobedient soul must pay the uttermost farthing, but when the debt has been discharged and punishment commensurate with the transgression has been inflicted, the eternal law will have no further, claim upon that soul, purged now from sin. Justice as well as mercy would be outraged if the punishment were continued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: January 9, 1902 The Prophet's ancestors for several generations were native Americans. The humble town of Sharon, Windsor county, Vermont, witnessed his birth. There, on the 23rd day of December, 1805, came be into the world. He was but ten years Old when his parents - honest farm folk in lowly circumstances - moved with their family of seven sons and three daughters, Joseph being the fourth child, into the back-woods Of western New York; and it was in that then modest and retired corner of the world - a world that now rings with his fame, told by both good and evil tongues - that the curtain arose upon the great drama Of the latter days. When about mid-way between fourteen and fifteen years Of age, he received his first miraculous manifestation - that glorious and unspeakable appearing of the Father and the Son, which has been for so many years the theme of so many tongues and pens, of so much comment, favorable and unfavorable; to the Gentiles foolishness, and to some Latter-day Saints, skeptically inclined, a stumbling stone. It was a period of great religious excitement in the neighborhood of Joseph's home, the little village of Manchester. Revivals were ln progress, camp meetings were being held by ministers of various denominations, and it was to sol a question in his mind as to which of all the Christian churches was the true Church of Christ, that he went one spring morning into the woods near his father's home, to ask for wisdom, for spiritual light and guid ance, Of that God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, as testified James the Apostle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: May 29, 1902 Theologians have many ways Of explaining this vision. But this is the plain explanation the Lord himself gives, and this is not figurative language. The vision itself was figurative; this is the explanation Of the figure. The resurrection of Israel is to be just as literal as the resurrection of the Saints who came out Of their graves into Jerusalem and appeared unto many. The Apostle Paul speaks very plainly in Romans viii: 11, But if the spirit Of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (resurrect John v: 21) your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you. He also says, We ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption Of our body. This shows clearly that our body, as well as our spirit, is to be redeemed. Duffin, president of the Southwestern States mission, said that this mission was one Of a large area, and liberal-minded people. The Elders meet with little or no persecution, and as a rule are treated well. They meet with fair success. A large number of books are sold among the people. The Elders emphasize the truth that God has revealed Himself anew. They feel that it is necessary to dwell on the work which God is doing to-day and not so much on what He did in past ages. They had recently got out an edition of ten thousand of the Book of Mormon. About one-half of the expense Of this work had been sustained by the Elders laboring there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: November 20, 1902 He spoke of the idea expressed by one of the many mission presidents that the missionaries avoided debates. This was a correct stand to take. It was not because the Elders feared to meet in debate, but rather because it was not their duty to contend. Those who seek debate generally do not seek the truth but contention; and the Elders were sent to preach the Gospel. This was the policy of the ancient Church. Men had ridiculed the Elders for believing that Adam was a God. We are not ashamed of this doctrine. J esus said in speaking to the J ews in relation to Abraham, that they were Gods unto whom the word of God comes. But though we look upon Adam as a God, we worship the same God that Adam worshipped in the Garden of Eden. With the Apostle Paul we say there is but one God. The speaker advised the young missionaries to look into the standard works of the Church for doctrine; and when anyone brought to them any excerpt of a sermon, to ask that the entire sermon be brought in order that the whole context might be taken. It is not a good thing for the missionaries to go out of the standard Church works. He prayed for the blessing of God to rest upon the conference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: September 11, 1902 From the Apostles we turn to the fathers, and later teachers in the church and secure their evidence. The earlier of these quote from the gospels and the epistles without mentioning from whom they quote, and sometimes with little verbal accuracy. Their use _of the books proves, however, that they regarded them as Scripture for the guidance of the church. This evidence is most valuable in attesting the antiquity of our New Testament, since its books must have existed. Long before to have been so venerated by these worthy writers. Here are a few examples of their quotations. Clement of Rome, the earliest of writers after the Apostles, says, Remem ber the words Of our Lord Jesus Christ; for He said, 'woe to that man; it were better for him that he had not been born than that he should offend one of my elect. It were better for him that a millstone should be tied about his neck and that he should be drowned in the sea than that he should ofi'end one of my little Matthew, Mark and Luke each use words similar to these. It is from one of them he no doubt quotes (see Matt. Xviii: 6 Mark ix: 42; Luke xvii: 1 In the Epistle of Barnabas, written about 97 a.d., is the following: Let us take heed lest, as it is written, we be found many called, but few chosen. This is clearly a quotation from the written gospel Of St. Matthew (matt. Xx: Papias, who lived during the first half of the second century mentions the gospels Of Matthew and Mark, and the epistles of Peter and John (eusebius h.e. III. One of the very best of early witnesses to the New Testament is Justin Martyr, who wrote an apology addressed to the Roman Emperor Antonius about 150 a.d. He quotes copiously from the gospels, and though he does not name his authors, says the memoirs he uses are called gospels, and were composed by Apostles and those who followed them. These memoirs, said he, were read along with the Prophets the Old Testament) at the meetings of the Christians each Sunday. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saint's Millennial Star, Vol. 64: September 4, 1902 This age is becoming daily more and more of a reading age, the forces of evil, as is everywhere apparent, are using this almost new-born manifestation. The prophetic utterance, many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased, is in process of rapid fulfilment.
