Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: October 26, 1922 John the Revelator saw the restoration in the latter days of the everlasting Gospel. His great vision of the flying angel did not refer to the preaching of the Gospel in the days of the Saviour and the ancient twelve, for when John saw the vision nearly one hundred years had passed since Christ was born. It referred, as the Saviour told John in the beginning, to things that shall be hereafter. The Gospel was to be preached to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, showing that every nation, kindred, tongue and people would be without it, but would hear it by means of its restoration in the latter days, when all the dispensa tions of the past will be united and will flow into this one, as the rills and rivers flow into the ocean. All the past dispensations point down to this time, and find their fulfillment herein. Adam's dispensation has its fruition in this age of the world; Enoch's, Noah's, Abraham's, Moses', all these dispensations must be bound together and become one in this the Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. That is the message that the world has nicknamed Mormonism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: July 24, 1902 In this revelation the Lord enumerates many things in common use that are not good for man. He sets forth that strong drinks are intended only for washing the body and forbids His children using them as beverages. Tobacco is to be used only as an herb for bruises and sick cattle. Hot drinks (mean ing tea and coffee) are condemned as not being good for the body. The eating of meats is also discouraged, save in times of cold and famine, and then they are to be used sparingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: June 19, 1902 It stands to reason that one who labors under these high convictions will be much more likely to achieve success than one into whose life's labor no such inspiring thoughts enter, and what is true of the individual in this case will be found to be true of a community. Moreover, under the foregoing ideas which have taken possession of him, the Mormon will submit to a severer self - discipline than will a man in whose life no such ideas are present. He is far advanced in the spirit of the ruling principle one sees in the life of Christ, and which is represented in the words, Father, not my will, but thine be done. He is prepared to act with his fellows in the interest of the community, even at the sacrifice of what may be personal to him. There is bound to be in the aggregation of such units a strong community sentiment, resulting in mutual helpfulness that can scarcely fail to make them successful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: July 31, 1902 Keeping in mind what the Scripture says concerning the ancient law, it will be interesting now to consider the development of the same plan In latter times Great importance is attached to the law of tithing as a principle of the Gospel revealed through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Its incorporation in the system of religion advocated by the Latter-day Saints is an evidence of the divinity of the Gospel message. Had it been omitted men might have attacked the religion as not containing all that is necessary unto a perfect plan of salvation indeed, the system would have been incomplete without it. The Gospel aims to perfect mankind, to raise them above the power of all their enemies, to give them salvation. One of the most universal characteristics of mortal beings is selfishness. It is an enemy to righteousness and must be eradicated. This weakness is often manifested in covetousness and sordid greed. The perfect plan of salvation must recognize this evil and provide a means of over-coming it, that thereby men. May be above the power of Satan to tempt them with riches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: July 10, 1902 It was a little after 3 am; out into'the night and storm we went. The wind howling, nearly blinded us with the whirl of 'snow. With every step came sharp rheumatic pains from ankle to hip, and this made progress slow. We did not know the way, but were led by the Spirit. At 5 am. We saw a light and on inquiry found we had been traveling right. On, on we tramped, the crucifix at the entrance of every town and along the roadside telling us plainer than words the kind of community. Still we went on, the snow mak ing it hard to travel. We were so cold that we were driven to ask a few moments' shelter in one of the prevalent house-barn dwellings, but were denied the same, still, to modify the coldness of the refusal, something more than a penny was thrust into our hands before the door swung to. The cold was intense, especially as we were wet through and through from perspiration and the previous night's rain. Death hovered over us all day, death from exposure and cold. At intervals all would turn black before us, and it seemed that we must sink down in the snow and perish, but the sustaining peace of the Holy Spirit never failed us and somehow we went on. At noon we came to two houses by the roadside. The Spirit guided us to go into one, and the good lady offered us money, but after hearing our message she invited us in, saying, the pastor must have sent you, but we promptly denied that. She was the only Protestant for miles on either side. Here we found sympathy and rest; then we tramped forth again. Being warned by her against the whole district, we made Gleidorf our objective point. She said that there we would find some Protestants, and we could easily reach there by evening, but we should not go farther as it was much worse beyond than what we had already seen. We reached Gleidorf in time, tracted and were at first rejected. At length one very poor man, who had a sick wife, insisted on giving us 25d. We ex plained that the tracts were entirely free, but he insisted. Now the whole village seemed open to us, and altogether we received something less than a shilling. At one place where a large company was gathered, playing cards, a purse amounting to nearly fourpence was made up and given us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: October 16, 1902 This shows that endless, eternal, everlasting and similar terms indicate the hind not the duration of punishment. As God IS eternal, so are His laws and their appropriate rewards and punishments. They ever exist to inspire righteousness and correct evil, to bless the faithful and inflict retribution upon the disobedient. Under this everlasting code individuals will be rewarded or punished according to deeds done in the body. Thus the justice of God is vindicated and a foundation is laid for the larger hope that the Latter-day Saints have so long advocated, and that is now so rapidly gaining favor among Christian people. The Savior taught that the unfaithful and disobedient would be beaten with many stripes, while those less blameworthy would receive few stripes (luke xii: 47 St. Paul says God will render to every man according to his deeds (rom. Ii: St. John adds his testimony to the same effect (rev. Xx': 12, So do Jeremiah (chaps. Xvii: 10; xxxii: 19) and others. If these passages mean anything, they mean that every man will receive absolute justice; no more, no less. Each disobedient soul must pay the uttermost farthing, but when the debt has been discharged and punishment commensurate with the transgression has been inflicted, the eternal law will have no further, claim upon that soul, purged now from sin. Justice as well as mercy would be outraged if the punishment were continued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
