Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: December 5, 1901 The Lord designs to change this condition of things, and to make us known to the world in our true light - as true worshipers of God, as those who have become the children of God by repentance, and by the law of adoption have become heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ; and that our mission in this world is to do good, to put down iniquity under our feet, to exalt righteousness, purity and holiness in the hearts of the people, and to establish in the minds of our children, above all other things, a love for God and His word, that shall be in them as a fountain of light, strength, faith and power, leading them on from childhood to old age, and making them firm believers in the word of the Lord, in the restored Gospel and Priesthood, and in the establishment of Zion, no more to be thrown down nor given to another people. If there is anything that I desire above another in this world, it is that my children shall become established in this knowledge and faith, so that they can never be turned aside from it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: June 6, 1901 These are my duties, and I expect to carry out the same by the help of the Lord and the inspiration of His holy spirit, and I rely on the Presid ing Elders and the general ministry aiding me with all their might, that our labor may not be in vain in the Lord. I expect to visit in turn all the Conferences in the Mission, both in Britain and on the Continent. I expect, also, to regulate and counsel with the Priesthood, land to make my report to the authorities at home as fast and as far as my opportunities will permit. I have the welfare of the entire Mission at heart, I want to see it prosper and thrive, so that this great latter-day work may fulfil and accomplish all that the Prophets have spoken and that the Lord desires. I hope to become acquainted with many of the Saints, and to find them diligent, faithful, obedient and progressive; they will have my faith, prayers and blessings; I hope to have theirs, and I want to see them more and more interested in aiding the Elders, by inviting to our meetings their kindred and friends; I hope to hear of their attention to the Word of Wisdom I want them to understand the principle of tithing, I want them to be honest, prayerful, true and alive, to be cc-workers with the local and traveling Priesthood, with myself as President of this great Mission, and with Prophets and Apostles of this dispensation. The Lord has given us a great work to do, and we have bad a grand program prepared for us. We want to work to that with mutual confidence and good will, making our example felt wherever we are, loving the theory of the Gospel, but giving our lives to its manifestations in our own souls, so that we may stand approved. We shall be with you as long as the Lord sees fit, we are here by His divine call, we shall remain until He says, enough, and now extend to me your hearty cc-operation, that the work may prosper in our hands, that there may be a great ingathering of such as shall be saved. I regret your loss of the services of my predecessors, though change of laborers characterizes the latter-day work, but in all such we must learn to transfer our love, faith, confidence and support to whomsoever the Lord may appoint to seek our welfare and build up His kingdom. When we do this, all will be well, and as we do it I ask the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, to smile upon and bless you all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: March 14, 1901 After performing the baptism the party started back towards the home of Dr. Maeser. The only Elder who could talk German was Elder Budge, and the conversation was carried on between Apostle Richards and Dr. Maeser, with Elder Budge acting as interpreter. The colloquy had not proceeded long, however, when Apostle Richards told Elder Budge that it was not necessary for him to interpret any more, as he and Brother Maeser understood each other perfectly. Elder Schoenfeldt relates that it was a very dark night, and when he first realized that the two men were conversing together with perfect facility, yet neither understood the native tongue of the other, his feelings were indescribable, for he knew that it was a divine manifestation. Dr. Maeser in later years testified that when he emerged from the water, he prayed that his faith might be confirmed by some manifestation from heaven, and he felt confident that his prayer would be answered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: July 18, 1901 We hold that mankind are literally the spiritual children of God; that even as the Christ had an existence with the Father before coming to earth to take upon Himself a tabernacle of flesh, to live and to die as a man in accordance with the pre-ordained plan of redemption, so, too, every child of earth had an existence in the spirit state before entering upon this mortal probation. We hold the doctrine to be reasonable, scriptural and true, that mortal birth is no more the beginning of the soul's existence than is death its end. The time-span of mortal life is but one stage in the soul's career, separat ing the eternity that has preceded from the eternity that is to follow. And this mortal existence is one of the Father's great gifts to His spiritual children, affording them the opportunity of an untrammeled exercise of their free agency, the privilege of meeting temptation and of resisting it if they will, the chance to win exaltation and eternal life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: October 3, 1901 The spreading interest among women in the work of the Mormons has stirred up the pastors of the local churches. Many assert that the Mor mons deceive their street audiences by preaching to them for half-ah-hour or more in an interesting manner that ingratiates them into the confidence of their listeners before telling them that they are Mormons. Several of the church pastors have discussed with each other the necessity of taking some effective means of checking the development of Mormonism, which they fear is menacing their congregations. There is a probability that a call will be issued in a few days for a meet ing of all the pastors who are interested in the movement, and a plan of campaign will then be determined upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: July 25, 1901 Mormonism claims the same necessity to exist to-day. It holds that it is no more possible now than it was in the days of the ancient prophets or in the apostolic age for the Church of Christ to exist without direct and continuous revelation from God. This necessitates the existence and authorized ministrations of prophets, apostles, high priests, seventies, elders, bishops, priests, teachers and. Deacons, now as anciently - not men selected by men without authority, clothed by human ceremonial alone, not men with the empty names of these and analogous offices, but men who bear the title because they possess the authority, having been called of God. Is it unreasonable, is it unphilosophical, thus to look for additional light and knowledge? Shall religion be the one department of human thought and effort In which progression is impossible? What would we say of the chemist, the astronomer, the physicist, or the geologist, who would pro claim that no further discovery or revelation of scientific truth 18 possible. His sister Eliza was teaching school there, and at the close of his college course she invited him to come to Kirtland and attend a class engaged in the study of the Hebrew language. On the way to Kirtland he met Elder David W. Patten, who engaged him in conversation on the principles of the Gospel. This conversation deeply impressed the young man, and from that time a new field of thought was Opened to his mind. At Kirtland he became acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith. He was baptized by Apostle John Boynton, in June, 1836, and shortly after received a powerful testimony of the truth. Added to this were the many manifestations of the power of God which be witnessed in the meetings held in the Kirtland Temple. I do not wish to detract from the labors of the Elders in our own land; but this land has been warned. I feel that we can stand before the judg ment seat of our great Creator free from the blood of this generation in these United States. It is true we have not told every man, woman and child about these things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: May 2, 1901 N 0 man, woman or child of the age of understanding, can approach the Lord unless they repent. If they do so in response to the message of the servants of the Lord, then the Lord will send His spirit upon them and testify to them of the truth. This principle of repentance applies to the Latter-day Saints, and is perpetuated in its application to mortal life. Many of the Saints are slack and neglectful in relation to their duties. Now is the time for such to change their course. This applies to attend ance to quorum meetings of the Priesthood and all other duties, which are frequently defined with unmistakable clearness. The reception of the Priesthood is associated with covenants and obligations. If these are neglected the displeasure of God will rest upon those who are thus derelict. The speaker here dwelt a short time upon the excellent effects which had resulted from recent teachings of President Snow in reference to the necessity of close compliance with the law of tithing. Notwithstanding the general good effect produced, there were not a few who failed in regard to conformity with this important law. Such are in the most unenviable situation. Complete compliance with the law alone entitled the individual to the blessings predicated upon obedience to the principle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: May 9, 1901 The health of President Cannon had been occasionally interrupted by spells of sickness for some time before the fatal attack. He had been robust and strong until the fall from the train already mentioned. After that he experienced once in a while a weakness in contrast to his former vigor. While on visits to the East he was seized with serious symptoms. At New York, in November, 1899, he was severely attacked with pneumonia, and but for his abstemious life and good constitution he would probably have then succumbed.
