On the day of Pentecost, Peter said to the believing multitude: Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (acts 2: And that, that they might know with him: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. As to how they could know, Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this [the above named] rock [of revela tion] I will build my Church. (matt. 16: 16 Paul says in I. Cor. Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speak ing by the spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed; and that no man can say [and know it] that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. The Lord speaking in the revelations given to Joseph Smith as contained in the Doctrine and Covenants, section 20: 37, says, All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits and witness before the Church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve Him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into His Church. And in section 46: 13 To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that He was crucified for the sins of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 90: December 13, 1928 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. - Matt. 19 6. A man cannot grow to the full measure of a man without a woman; and conversely, a woman cannot grow to the full measure of a woman without a man. They were created together and God intended them to be together in wedlock. If men and women are to enter into a fulness of joy, it must needs be that the family relationship should continue throughout eternity. That it will so continue in the Church and kingdom of God is the firm belief of the Latter-day Saints. To be born into the world in the first place, and then to be born again - born into the kingdom of God - and finally to enter into the eternity of the marriage covenant - these three conditions explain with clearness the very purpose of life. Surely, brethren and sisters, life is worth living. I testify to you most earnestly that I do know that the work in which we are engaged is the work of God, and that this is the Church of Jesus Christ; It is so denominated. It is called the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to distinguish it from His Church in the meridian of time. I know that Christ was and is the Saviour of the world, that Joseph Smith was a prophet Of God, and the instrument in the hands of God in founding this work by organizing the Church as He did in 1830. I rejoice in this knowledge. To me it is a glorious testimony, and I am determined, if possible, to hold on to it all the days of my life. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: August 13, 1903 Savior. _this is because the people have become acquainted with the name of the Savior and have learned from the Jewish Scriptures very much in regard to the Lord and the doctrines that were new in His day. His mission was a new revelation to them. The doctrines He then presented were different from those entertained in the world. The Christian world today have learned many of His doctrines, and although it is difficult for any to embrace the whole, yet all Christians embrace many of them. Hence we come to a people who have a portion of faith in the Savior. We come to a Christian people who have the Bible before them and are well acquainted with its doctrines, and who have learned a great deal from the Savior and His disciples. We now find men with the courage to accept the Gospel. The Christian spirit is more tolerant, than it used to be. The people are better prepared to tolerate the truth than they were anciently. When we come with the message of life and salvation, we find the world measurably prepared for our doctrines. They are in sympathy with the teachings of the Bible, not only of the Old Testament, but the New Testament also, hence our way is comparatively easy. The Lord has revealed the truth in these last days from the heavens. He has restored His word and commanded His disciples to preach it in all the world. He has revealed Himself to the Prophet Joseph Smith, and how necessary it was, for there had not been prop Ts on the earth for eighteen hundred years! Although people lived in Christian world, the living oracles were not among them. There have been many churches; they have labored faithfully with their ministers for the salvation of the people, but they have not enjoyed the holy priesthood. You remember that the Church of the Savior was not tolerated. He Himself was destroyed, as His Apostles were also. The world was not prepared at' that time to receive the message He had, hence His authority and His Church were withdrawn from men, or were driven from among them. It was necessary after eighteen hundred years that the Lord should commence to reveal Himself to the children of men. For no man that lived during that length of time knew the Father, nor had any man lived that knew the Savior. No representatives, no authorized servants of the Lord had been upon the earth during that time. If they had they would have known the Father and Jesus Christ. They would have possessed the Holy Ghost, and would have been taught by its power. The heavens would have been opened as they were to the Son of God, and the Holy Ghost would have descended upon those properly baptized. They would have known the Father and the Son. If the Christian world had had the proper authority among them they would have been one to-day instead of being numerous churches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: May 13, 1909 These illustrations are by no means considered as models in their class; but they serve the purpose of calling attention to the numberless perils of an insidious nature that Joseph Smith as an alleged impostor had to meet and avoid under the penalty of immediate exposure. It would require a volume to mention all the familiar names that must be excluded from the Book of Mormon in order that it may pass unchallenged, on this ground, as an ancient record; for the list embraces the nameof every invention, custom, manner, law and accomplishment; of every instrument, utensil, metal, power and force; of every industry, business and profession; of every product of the farm, factory, and laboratory; of every race, state and nation and their history, of every sect, principle and policy; of every theory and fact, etc., etc., almost to ad infinitum, that was not known by some name, or in some form to the ancient people whose history it records, or which can not be traced to the natural progress and development of those people themselves. But this is not all that is required in order that the Book of Mormon can not be successfully assailed on the ground of being modern in its standpoint; for allusion or reference to the excluded things and matters must also be suppressed. From these considerations it is very evident that in order to write now a spurious history of the largeness of that contained in the Book of'mormon, and do it successfully on an ancient basis, the author must not only perform his work in perfect oblivion of all his surroundings and modern education and knowledge; but he must also make himself just as familiar with everything necessary for his work which pertains to the ancient times of which he writes, as though he lived in that day. N o mortal ever has undertaken such a work and carried it out successfully; and it is recognized as a fact that no human being can do it. The snares and pitfalls that lie hidden in the way of its accomplishment are so insidious and deadly that human wisdom and skill can not avoid all of them; and it is safe to say that every page of such a work written by an unlearned youth in his own power, would reveal his true character. The Book of Mormon is the work of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 103: February 13, 1911 Thus, in no uncertain terms, the religious community of the Book of Mormon declares that God is mindful of every people. Since He is mindful of every people, should we not strive for the same attitude, for a world point of View? But there are certain world view-points for which we would not seek. For example, we would not seek to control the world by the force of arms; we would not Wish to dominate, for our selfish inter est the money market of the world; we would not wish to dictate the ideology of the world - these are ambitions which are the outgrowth of selfishness. But the Book of Mormon community, urging as it does that God is mindful of every people, would wish us to achieve a world View of a type worthy of God. What is this type and how may it be achieved? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: October, 13, 1932 Philosophy. Mormon philosophy teaches that man, who is the literal offspring of God, His spiritual child, lived in a pre existent state; that he was placed on the earth as an eternal spirit in a mortal body to undergo the experiences that belong to this earth. Man suffered death, a separation of body and spirit, through the fall of his first parents. A Redeemer, Jesus Christ, was provided, empowered to overcome death. This Redeemer made possible a reunion of the spirit and the body through the resurrection, from death to immortality. When man reaches the immortal state he will be rewarded according to his works in the mortal state. His progress continues and is eternal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: January 13, 1938 Sometimes thoughts are like unruly children - difficult to con trol. I have persuaded myself, however, that they can be disciplined, and often they must be if we are to preserve our faith. Let me illustrate again with a fanciful character. He maybe a student or even a professor, because, after all, good professors are always students. This academic man begins to ponder. He has studied and he has done a good deal of seien tific thinking. He comes on to a number of perplexing questions with apparent incompatibility between his former conceptions of faith and the new things which he learns. What about the age of the earth? Was Adam really the first man? In the light of what he has learned can he still believe in the miracles as reported in the scriptures, and coming down to later days, can the story of the Prophet Joseph Smith be true? Was he really visited by heavenly beings? Did he translate the Book of Mormon by the power of the Lord? Was the holy Priesthood actually bestowed by divine messengers? It is while he is contemplating such things, even though he is loath to let go of his once simple faith, that his thoughts Spring up unbidden, almost belligerently, to fight down his erstwhile convictions. They heckle him and they challenge him. What do you know? How much proof have you? They say. Why don't you acknowledge, in the face of what you have learned, that you have been the victim of a delusion? And he says to himself in answer to these taunts, I do want to be intellectually honest; I want to be true to myself. Now here is where I want to break into this conversation with himself. I want to ask this scholar who has a thinking complex of the kind which I have mentioned, this question, when he says, I want to be true to myself: What part of yourself is it to which you want to be true? Is it your spiritual self or this new man of science? IS it that fellow who was yourself throughout your boyhood and your youth; whom your mother and father nurtured so carefully and loved so much. Book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 82

Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 82 written by George Albert Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: May 13, 1920 Warms in the sun, refreshes in the breeze, Glows in the stars and blossoms in the trees. That, said Elder Whitney, is an admirable description of the spirit that emanates from God and pervades all creation; but it is not God himself, in whose image man was created. To worship a gift or an emanation from God is a form of idolatry. When, a hundred years ago, the Father and the Son appeared to the boy Joseph Smith - two beings in the form of man - from that hour there was one person, at least, upon this planet who knew what kind of a being God is. It was no chance happening, that took Joseph Smith into the woods to pray, on that glorious spring morning. It was the design of Deity, a predestined event. The hour had struck, and the man was there whom God had provided. Other boys might pray, and their prayers would be answered; but not in this way. All men are not called to be prophets. He was the one ordained for the purpose, the man divinely chosen to usher in the great work of the dispensation of the fulness of times. This is the Saturday night of the world's history, and morning will break upon the Millennium, the thousand years of peace, the Sabbath of the World. That is why all things are in commotion. War, famine, pestilence, earthquake, tempest and tidal wave these are among the predicted signs of the Savior's second coming. Earth must be freed from oppression and cleansed from iniquity. It is God's house, and He is coming to live in it. Bishop Charles W. Nibley was the concluding speaker. Cit-ing some of the fruits of Mormonism during the one hundred years since the Lord revealed himself, he said the world must admit the works of Mormonism are good. Was it not a good work to preach the gospel to the poor and oppressed of the earth, and bring them together in a thrifty working community, where their souls might have peace? Was it not a good work to build a community by co operative efiort? If these are good works, then the tree has put forth good fruit. Is it not a good work for the Mormon Church to support its own school system, in addition to paying taxes as citizens of the state for the support of the public school system? The gospel is a higher and better law than the law of the land. It does not controvert it, it supplements it. The Mormon people challenge the world for loyalty to their country. They teach good citizenship. And the spiritual truths taught by the Mormons: Faith, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. Are they not good teachings? The spirit of sacrifice, of service, of work, of courage, are instilled into the hearts of the Latter-day Saints by the power of the Holy Ghost. Thus all the fruits of Mormonism are evidence that its message is true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: August 13, 1914 Do we owe Him so little that we can afford to pass our time In comfort and ease, caring nothing for the greater and better things of life - nothing for the laws which Christ laid down for our sal vation? Is it not better by far to be live fish going against the stream - if we may find peace, happiness and love at the end - than to go with the stream, and fail to realize the purpose of our creation? Shall we be of the world, and regret forever that we have not attained to what we might have been through our failure to improve the opportunities that have been offered to us? Our eyes are open, free agency is given to all, and two roads lie before us from which to choose. I need not say where the respective roads lead, for this we all know, and if we would but make a care ful study of the matter, we will know which is the better way. But I am wandering from my subject, the fatherhood of God, and I will now return to it. For some time past I have been searching for scriptural texts that are pertinent to my leading thought, and by the time we have read a few of them we will see that never for a moment was the fatherhood of God absent from the mind of Christ. On one occasion, when speaking of the love of God for mankind, taking a little child to Himself, He said, Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish (matt. 18: And another passage reads: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved (john 3: 16. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: December 13, 1934 I have been asked hundreds. If not thousands of times, what difference there is between the belief of the Latter-day Saints and that of most of the Christian denominations as to the ulti mate salvation of the peoples of this world. I have answered briefly that the Latter-day Saints teach that salvation is for all people - of all ages, of all races, of all colours - all people who can be saved. The revelation to Joseph Smith is that salvation is to come to all, and that none will be lost who can possibly be redeemed - that the plan of salvation is as broad as the fall of man. Our first parents broke a divine command, and through their disobedience death came into the world - while on the other hand, through the atonement and obedience of Christ, life and salva tion will ultimately come to all the family of Adam. As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive. WE also testify that in the nineteenth century our Heavenly Father was pleased to open the heavens once more and send His Son, Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, with a divine message, conforming in every respect to the teachings of this same Christ while in mortality. We know that angels have been sent from the Father declaring truths that would assure salvation for all who receive and obey them. I recognize that the ordinary person hesitates a long time before he considers it worth while to consider such a declaration. And he can never become con vinced until, through faith and prayer, a testimony from an unerring source is received by him. We declare that angels have come down from heaven, bringing light and truth for the salvation of all the human family, and a message to be pro claimed to every nation, kindred, tongue and people. How well this obligation on our part has been carried forward God knows est. The greatest religious teacher among men was Jesus, the Nazarene. III His personality God was made manifest in the flesh. He revealed Deity to humanity. He showed that God was in reality the Father of the spirits of men. He proclaimed that He was in the beginning with God - that He came forth from God, and would return to God and that all mankind were His brethren, made in the image of God, and part of His eternal family. This presents God as actually and literally Our Father which art in heaven.
