Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 101: November 2, 1939 But the boy knew that he could not be persuaded to deny what he had actually seen and heard. No man or influence of men could change his mind. In respect to this matter of the Word, what was it that aroused faith in the minds of men as also in the mind of the boy? It was the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And in this Gospel of Jesus Christ was to be found divine authority. That is what prompted him to seek the Lord in prayer which was followed by the manifestation and the inquiry by the Son, who said: What do you want? He had come into the Sacred Grove to pray and to ask a vital question because of the con fusion that existed in the minds of men at that time. In answer to the boy's question, he was told to join none of the various sects of the day. Although they might have some truths in their tenets, yet they nevertheless lacked very much in having. The fulness of the Gospel. This resulted in dissen sion, hard feelings and bitterness. This condition was not approved by the Lord and was not therefore acceptable to Him. The young man was thereupon told he must join none of them. Now, that was the substance of the wonderful manifestation given to the young man, Joseph Smith. It was some time after that before he could be designated a Prophet of God, or, in other words, before it could be said of him that he was an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was but a boy, and he was very much amazed with his experience. He took it to his father and mother and the first thing he said to them (four members of the family had joined the Presbyterian Church) was that he now knew that the Presbyterians did not have the Gospel in its fulness. As I have said, they may have had some truths, and so long as they refrained from engaging in the evils and dissension and fault-finding, etc., they were accept able to the Lord, but otherwise He could not receive them. Could any man at that time have been justified in saying that Joseph Smith was called of the Lord to go forth and organize the Church of Christ because of this great manifesta tion? No, no, he did not go for the purpose of ascertaining, whether he could organize a church. He went with the idea. That one of these various denominations was the true Church, which one he did not know. However, no authority, no power was given him beyond the condescension of the Father and the Son to manifest themselves in person to him. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: January 13, 1938 Sometimes thoughts are like unruly children - difficult to con trol. I have persuaded myself, however, that they can be disciplined, and often they must be if we are to preserve our faith. Let me illustrate again with a fanciful character. He maybe a student or even a professor, because, after all, good professors are always students. This academic man begins to ponder. He has studied and he has done a good deal of seien tific thinking. He comes on to a number of perplexing questions with apparent incompatibility between his former conceptions of faith and the new things which he learns. What about the age of the earth? Was Adam really the first man? In the light of what he has learned can he still believe in the miracles as reported in the scriptures, and coming down to later days, can the story of the Prophet Joseph Smith be true? Was he really visited by heavenly beings? Did he translate the Book of Mormon by the power of the Lord? Was the holy Priesthood actually bestowed by divine messengers? It is while he is contemplating such things, even though he is loath to let go of his once simple faith, that his thoughts Spring up unbidden, almost belligerently, to fight down his erstwhile convictions. They heckle him and they challenge him. What do you know? How much proof have you? They say. Why don't you acknowledge, in the face of what you have learned, that you have been the victim of a delusion? And he says to himself in answer to these taunts, I do want to be intellectually honest; I want to be true to myself. Now here is where I want to break into this conversation with himself. I want to ask this scholar who has a thinking complex of the kind which I have mentioned, this question, when he says, I want to be true to myself: What part of yourself is it to which you want to be true? Is it your spiritual self or this new man of science? IS it that fellow who was yourself throughout your boyhood and your youth; whom your mother and father nurtured so carefully and loved so much. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: November 24, 1938 The ruin of a Church member dates back to some idle moment. The darkest time of any man's life is when he sits down to plan how he can convert himself, and gain achieve ment without working for it. There is no excellence without labour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: June 2, 1938 Certainly much of the hatred and animosity manifest among the peoples of the world are largely if not entirely due to men's rejecting fundamental principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some men and some nations still apply the law of the jungle - cheat or be cheated, conquer or be. Conquered, kill or be killed - instead of do unto others as you would have others do unto you, love your neighbour as yourself, do good to them who despitefully use you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: November 3, 1938 Religion could be defined as the philosophy of life which governs men's reactions towards God and his fellowmen. Religion is a great driving force. More wars have been fought, more men have willingly undergone torture, and more sacrifices have been made for it than for any other force in the world. We look at the inorganic world about us. The way to change it is by working on it from without, but with organisms we must approach them differently. We must build within them certain inward drives, then they react accordingly. In the building and directing of these inward drives, religion plays its great part. As H. C. Cooley writes: Sentiment is the chief motive power of life. We may teach man intellectually what we want him to do. But unless he has the feeling of its worth he will not be guided by it. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: September 15, 1938 HE members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reverently believe in the Divinity of Christ and that through Him only can the world be saved from sin. We believe that He died to redeem mankind and that because of Him we may confidently expect a future life through the resurrection. In the mission of Jesus, we have an instance of a divine being assuming the form of a man and actually passing through the natural stages of birth, childhood, manhood and death. In this, He subjected Himself to the physical limitation of humanity - He became weary; He was an hungered; He needed sleep; He suffered physical pain. And He did this as He. So often said, in order to manifest the Father to whomsoever the Father might designate. And for what purpose? And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. There are not many who are original in their thoughts or actions; not many are discoverers or inventors. The vast majority are imitators. In order to advance, one must have in mind and wish to reach an ideal beyond his present condi tion. Take the case of a child. He hears his mother speak; he tries to speak. He sees other people walk; he tries to walk. When he becomes older he sees things other people possess and naturally longsto possess them. The child soon looks up to his parents and comes to consider them the embodiment of goodness and wisdom. To every child born into the world, father and mother are the first and best representatives of the purpose which is in the heart of God. Whom the child loves he wishes to resemble. If he admires and loves his parents he will copy after them and they will become his ideal and to a great extent shape his destiny; as he grows and develops in years he is slowly and gradually raised towards the level of his ideal. But soon he begins to observe other people and the time comes when the parents' influence over him is not so complete and he begins to admire others and slowly but surely to copy after them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: December 29, 1938 The true Church of Jesus Christ will be recognized also by the manner in which it initiates believers into the fold, and grants them membership in the Church. Certainly there can be no confusion of doctrine on this point, so definite was our Lord in marking out the one straight and narrow way, which is by faith, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remis sion of sins, and the conferring of the Holy Ghost by the lay ing on of hands; all ordinances to be performed by those duly called and authorized of God. It.will teach the doctrine explained by Peter. In his first epistle that Jesus Himself preached to the spirits of the departed dead; that while His own body lay in the tomb, He went and preached to the spirits of men whose bodies had died in the flood of Noah's day; and that He preached His gospel to them that they might live according to God in the spirit, and be judged according to men in the flesh (i Peter 3: 18; 4: 6) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: October 6, 1938 It is life we crave and liberty, free agency, personal choice or self-determination for which men fight. Our fight is not physical but it is against ignorance. Truth is our shield. It is ignorance of God's will which tempts men to war against their neighbours; the lust of power and the possessions of this world make men gamble away their lives and present conditions. They risk all and everything for money and what money can buy. Christ said to the rich man's son, Sell all that thou hast and follow me.
