Book excerpt: Jack Hobbes finally had to admit that all the Conspiracy Theories were right - every damned one of them - when he found himself driving his Mobile Library at speed down narrow Wiltshire roads at dawn, pursued by implacable Frenchmen who were not sure whether the sealed box he had strapped onto the passenger seat contained either a see-through electric kettle from Argos, or the preserved head of John the Baptist. On top of all that he then had to contend with the real Men in Black and the Trans-Galactics, plus MI5, the CIA, Opus Dei, numerous Freemasons and neo-Templars, Knights of the Star Gates, and various incarnate aspects of the Wild Hunt - who had been hiding for years in a certain little Old Peoples' Home in rural Wiltshire. And it had all been caused by two silly women - Jenny Djinn and Lilith Love - who just happened to also be Death Goddesses, and who fell for the same Mobile Librarian in a small Wiltshire town that was named after trolls...

Book Gendered Dynamics in Latin Love Poetry

Download or read book Gendered Dynamics in Latin Love Poetry written by Ronnie Ancona and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2005-11-18 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, Latin love poetry has become a significant site for feminist and other literary critics studying conceptions of gender and sexuality in ancient Roman culture. This new volume, the first to focus specifically on gender dynamics in Latin love poetry, moves beyond the polarized critical positions that argue that this poetry either confirms traditional gender roles or subverts them. Rather, the essays in the collection explore the ways in which Latin erotic texts can have both effects, shifting power back and forth between male and female. If there is one conclusion that emerges, it is that the dynamics of gender in Latin amatory poetry do not map in any single way onto the cultural and historical norms of Roman society. In fact, as several essays show, there is a dialectical relationship between this poetry and Roman cultural practices. By complicating the views of gender dynamics in Latin love poetry, this exciting new scholarship will stimulate further debates in classical studies and literary criticism with its fresh perspectives.

Book Greek and Latin Love

Download or read book Greek and Latin Love written by Thea S. Thorsen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often claimed that the kind of love that is variously deemed 'romantic' or 'true' did not exist in antiquity. Yet, ancient literature abounds with stories that seem to adhere precisely to this kind of love. This volume focuses on such literature and the concepts of love it espouses. The volume differs from and challenges much existing classical scholarship which has traditionally privileged the theme of sex over love and prose-genres over those of poetry. By conversely focusing on love and poetry, the present volume freshly explores central poets in ancient literature, such Homer, Sappho, Terence, Catullus, Virgil, Horace and Ovid, alongside less canonized, such as the anonymous poet of The Lament for Bion, Philodemus and Sulpicia. The chapters, which are written by world-leading as well as younger scholars, reveal that Greek and Latin concepts of love seem interconnected, that such love is as relevant for hetero- as homoerotic couples, and that such ideas of love follow the mainstream of poetry throughout antiquity. In addition to the general reader interested in the history of love, this volume is relevant for students and scholars of the ancient world and the poetic tradition.

Book Latin Love Poetry

  • Author : Denise Eileen McCoskey
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 0857734733
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Latin Love Poetry written by Denise Eileen McCoskey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I hate and I love.' The Roman poet Catullus expressed the disorienting experience of being in love in a stark contradiction that has resonated across the centuries. While his description might seem to modern readers natural and spontaneous, it is actually a response planned with great care and artistry. It is that artistry, and the way in which Roman love poetry works, that this book explores. Focusing on Catullus and on the later genre of elegy - so-called for its metre, and a form of poetry practiced by Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid - Denise Eileen McCoskey and Zara Martirosova Torlone discuss the devices used by the major Roman love poets, as well as the literary and historical contexts that helped shape their work. Setting poets and their writings especially against the turbulent backdrop of the Augustan Age (31 BCE-14 CE), the book examines the origins of Latin elegy; highlights the poets' key themes; and traces their reception by later writers and readers.

Book Latin Lovers

Download or read book Latin Lovers written by Pablo G. Castaneda R. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many times have you heard the term "Latin Lover?" What images does it bring to mind? If you're like most, you're imagining heated, lusty affairs and romantic, one-night stands. Latin Lovers: Do We Really Exist?, written by Pablo Castañeda, a native Guatemalan, redefines the Latin Lover as one having far more depth than today's society would lead you to believe. Castañeda argues that the Latin heart is fueled by a much stronger passion that longs to greet each second of life with love and enthusiasm. Pablo believes that women have intrinsic value and that men are truly blessed when they simply follow their hearts and love the woman in their life. He insists that through the years, his contact with women all over the world has both inspired him to be a better man and prepared him to be a better husband. He believes that each love relationship has its own magic, its own mystery, and its own story to tell. He shares the relationships he has cultivated with women and the invaluable lessons he's gleaned from each romance. Pablo relates how his God given passion for life is rooted in his Latin culture. He recounts how his family, music, dancing, and coffee have all played a huge role in shaping him into the man he is today. He shares how the change God brought about in his life has shown him the importance of dedicating time to get to know his heart. In conclusion, Pablo discloses the only way of becoming a real "Latin Lover". He implores you to join him in his journey and in so doing, perhaps find some answers in your own life.

Book Power Play in Latin Love Elegy and its Multiple Forms of Continuity in Ovid s Metamorphoses

Download or read book Power Play in Latin Love Elegy and its Multiple Forms of Continuity in Ovid s Metamorphoses written by José Manuel Blanco Mayor and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived as a necessary reconsideration of the pristine "elegiac question" in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this book intends to offer an analysis of the function of elegiac discourse within Ovid’s magnum opus from the perspective of metapoetics. To that end, the author undertakes, in the first section, a close re-reading of some relevant passages of Latin love elegy. From a prism that takes into account the characteristically elegiac multivocality, the genre reveals itself as an agonistic discourse in which the poet dramatises his metaliterary power-relation with the puella, who is unveiled as the synthesis of the distinct sub-products of his poetic activity. Thereupon, the author proceeds to scrutinise how elegiac elements are assimilated and transformed as they become integrated within the framework of Ovid’s poem of changing forms. Far from being a mere stylistic ornament, the presence of an elegiac register in many erotic passages tells us about Ovid’s stance towards love as a metapoetic trope. By reworking elegiac tradition to the point of transforming it into a novum corpus, the poet ultimately substantiates the mutability of generic categories.
