This book was released on 2007 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catalog opens with a detailed account of the growth of the collection from the early Stuarts to the reign of Queen Victoria. Particular attention is given to Charles I's close relations with Rubens, and since later members of the royal family also made important acquisitions, the full range of Rubens' practice is covered by the catalog: there are works entirely by his hand as well as works carried out with known collaborators or with the help of his studio. An outstanding group of genre paintings by David Teniers the Younger is examined and illustrated, and paintings by Jan Brueghel, Gonzalez Coques, Frans Francken, Frans Snyders, Karl Philips Spierincks and Jan Wildens round out the collection.

Book Pictorial Cultures and Political Iconographies

Download or read book Pictorial Cultures and Political Iconographies written by Udo J. Hebel and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pictorial turn in the humanities and social sciences has foregrounded the political power of images and the extent to which historical, political, social, and cultural processes and practices are shaped visually. Political iconographies are taken to interpret norms of actions, support ideological formations, and enhance moral concepts. Visual rhetorics are understood as active players in the construction and contestation of the political realm and public space. The twenty-one articles by scholars from Europe and the United States explore the political function and cultural impact of images from the perspectives of Art History, American Studies, Visual Culture Studies, History, and Political Science. The contributions in particular address the complex interplay between agent and addressee in the public space as well as issues of national identity, discourses of inclusion and exclusion, and the designation of political spaces within transnational contexts. The publication is part of the interdisciplinary research initiative “Perceiving and Understanding: Functions, Perception Processes, Forms of Visualizations, Cultural Strategies of Pictures and Texts” at the University of Regensburg.

Book excerpt: The first major examination of Anthony van Dyck's work as a portraitist and an essential resource on this aspect of his illustrious career This landmark volume is a comprehensive survey of the portrait drawings, paintings, and prints of Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), one of the most celebrated portraitists of all time. His supremely elegant style and ability to convey a sense of a sitter's inner life made him a favored portraitist among high-ranking figures and royalty across Europe, as well as among his fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Showcasing the full range of Van Dyck's fascinating international career with more than 100 works, this catalogue celebrates the artist's versatility, inventiveness, and influential approach to portraiture. Works include preparatory drawings and oil sketches that shed light on Van Dyck's working process, prints that allowed his work to reach a wider audience, and grand painted portraits. Some of the masterpieces are drawn from the exceptional holdings of The Frick Collection, while other works are presented here for the first time. Also included are drawings by some of Van Dyck's contemporaries--including his teacher Peter Paul Rubens--that illuminate the lineage of his working method. With insightful contributions by a team of international scholars, this unparalleled study of Van Dyck offers a compelling case for the distinctiveness and importance of the artist's work.

Book The Georgian London Town House

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kate Retford
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2019-03-07
  • ISBN : 1501337300
  • Pages : 357 pages

Download or read book The Georgian London Town House written by Kate Retford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every great country house of the Georgian period, there was usually also a town house. Chatsworth, for example, the home of the Devonshires, has officially been recognised as one of the country's favourite national treasures - but most of its visitors know little of Devonshire House, which the family once owned in the capital. In part, this is because town houses were often leased, rather than being passed down through generations as country estates were. But, most crucially, many London town houses, including Devonshire House, no longer exist, having been demolished in the early twentieth century. This book seeks to place centre-stage the hugely important yet hitherto overlooked town houses of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, exploring the prime position they once occupied in the lives of families and the nation as a whole. It explores the owners, how they furnished and used these properties, and how their houses were judged by the various types of visitor who gained access.

Book excerpt: At the turn of the sixteenth century, the notion of world was dramatically being reshaped, leaving no aspect of human experience untouched. The Nomadic Object: The Challenge of World for Early Modern Religious Art examines how sacred art and artefacts responded to the demands of a world stage in the age of reform. Essays by leading scholars explore how religious objects resulting from cross-cultural contact defied national and confessional categories and were re-contextualised in a global framework via their collection, exchange, production, management, and circulation. In dialogue with current discourses, papers address issues of idolatry, translation, materiality, value, and the agency of networks. The Nomadic Object demonstrates the significance of religious systems, from overseas logistics to philosophical underpinnings, for a global art history. Contributors are: Akira Akiyama, James Clifton, Jeffrey L. Collins, Ralph Dekoninck, Dagmar Eichberger, Beate Fricke, Christine Göttler, Christiane Hille, Margit Kern, Dipti Khera, Yoriko Kobayashi-Sato, Urte Krass, Evonne Levy, Meredith Martin, Walter S. Book Bruegel to Rubens

    Book Details:
  • Author : Desmond Shawe-Taylor
  • Publisher : Royal Collection Trust
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Bruegel to Rubens written by Desmond Shawe-Taylor and published by Royal Collection Trust. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is familiar with the Golden Age of Dutch art; this is an opportunity to explore its no less glorious Flemish counterpart. It is said that much of the greatest art is produced during periods of strife. In the mid-16th century, Flanders - the United Provinces in the north (modern Holland) and the Spanish Netherlands in the south (modern Belgium) - was the most sophisticated society in Europe, but its learning and luxury industries were all but annihilated by the so-called Dutch Revolt and by the Eighty Years War that followed (1568-1648). Two-thirds of the works discussed here were painted during this turbulent period, including Pieter Bruegel's ' Massacre of the Innocents of 1567 .' During the Renaissance the Low Countries attained a flawless technique of painting and the highest standards of craftsmanship. This tradition survived during even the worst years of the war.

Book Rubens and the Dominican Church in Antwerp

Download or read book Rubens and the Dominican Church in Antwerp written by Adam Sammut and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the Dominican church in Antwerp (today St Paul’s). It is structured around three works of art, made or procured by Peter Paul Rubens: the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary cycle (in situ), Caravaggio’s Rosary Madonna (Vienna) and the Wrath of Christ high altarpiece (Lyon). Within the artist’s lifetime, the church and monastery were completely rebuilt, creating one of the most spectacular sacred spaces in Northern Europe. In this richly illustrated book, Adam Sammut reconceptualises early modern churches as theatres of political economy, advancing an original approach to cultural production in a time of war. Using methodologies at the cutting edge of the humanities, the place of St Paul’s is restored to the crux of Antwerp’s commercial, civic and religious life.

Book The Conversation Piece

    Book Details:
  • Author : Desmond Shawe-Taylor
  • Publisher : Royal Collection Trust
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book The Conversation Piece written by Desmond Shawe-Taylor and published by Royal Collection Trust. This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 'Conversation Piece' is an intriguing contradiction - the high-life group, but caught informally, off-guard. Popular in seventeenth-century Dutch painting, it developed to include sporting events and 'Grand Tourists', and reached its apogee in the eighteenth century in the masterpieces created by Johan Zoffany for his English patrons, including George III." "This new publication accompanies the first exhibition on this subject for over thirty years, presenting early Dutch and Flemish genre paintings against their successors in the informal portraiture of Stubbs and Hogarth, as well as iconic works by Zoffany himself. It also provides a unique opportunity to connect the study of the 'conversation' in eighteenth-century English art to its seventeenth-century European predecessors." --Book Jacket.
