The aspirations and hopes for democracy and respect for human rights as expressed at that time, however, are today only bleak memories, as Eritrea has developed into one of the world's most totalitarian and human rights-abusing regimes. The purpose of this report is to assess the human rights situation in Eritrea in context, and try to explain why the country developed along the path it did."--p. 17.

Book Eritrea Struggle for Nation Building and Self Guide

Download or read book Eritrea Struggle for Nation Building and Self Guide written by Edward Baldwin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eritrea Struggle for Nation Building and self-guide. Eritrea History Political, Military and Cultural Book. The Eritrean people resort to armed struggle mainly because all efforts made to gain its independence through peaceful means were exhausted. And the armed struggle for independence continued until the Eritrean people gained its independence and be able to decide its state of affairs by its own. That, however, does not mean that no efforts have been made to resolve its state of affairs through peaceful means. It has been pushing rigorously for peaceful solution for it knows that a lot could be gained from that. The EPLF's bidding for peace emanates from this perception. And it made different contacts in several places with the Dergue regime in a bid to resolve the Eritrean issue through peaceful means. The contacts made in East Germany and in other European countries attest to the efforts made. The referendum proposal presented by the EPLF in 1980 also demonstrates how much the front was ready for peaceful solution. Many peace loving nations and organizations have demonstrated their support. It still stand firm in its stance and that has been practically demonstrated in 1993

Book Eritrea Demystifying The Eplf

Download or read book Eritrea Demystifying The Eplf written by Feseha B. Wold and published by . This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eritrea: Demystifying the EPLF details the accounts of the many battlefield struggles and the stories therein through the lenses of the author, a former freedom fighter emphasising both the victories and sacrifices. It analyses why despite the victories in the armed struggle leading to the independence of Eritrea, the Eritrean people are yet to experience peaceful and democratic lives. Furthermore, it explores the devastating consequence of the zero-sum politics that prioritizes the views and interests of the leadership over compromise and inclusiveness that advances a common national interest. Mr. Wold's lived experience in the Eritrean armed struggle remembers and narrates the power struggle in the movement as having been more vicious than the deadly battles against the enemy. Moving forward, the author believes it is still not too late to pull Eritrea back to the right track and provides ideas for progress.

Book The African Garrison State

Download or read book The African Garrison State written by Kjetil Tronvoll and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Eritrea gained independence in 1991, hopes were high for its transformation. In two decades, however, it became one of the most repressive in the world, effectively a militarised "garrison state". This comprehensive and detailed analysis examines how the prospects for democracy in the new state turned to ashes, reviewing its development, and in particular the loss of human rights and the state's political organisation. Beginning with judicial development in independent Eritrea, subsequent chapters scrutinise the rule of law and the court system; the hobbled process of democratisation, and the curtailment of civil society; the Eritrean prison system and everyday life of detention and disappearances; and the situation of minorities in the country, first in general terms and then through exploration of a case study of the Kunama ethnic group. While the situation is bleak, it is not without hope, however: the conclusion focuses on opposition to the current regime, and offers scenarios of regime change and how the coming of a second republic may yet reconfigure Eritrea politically. Kjetil Tronvoll is Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Bjoerknes College, founding and senior partner of the International Law and Policy Institute, Oslo, and a former Professor of Human Rights at the University of Oslo; Daniel R. Mekonnen is Senior Legal Advisor, International Law and Policy Institute, Oslo, and former Judge of the Zoba Maekel Provincial Court in Eritrea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom in the World, the Freedom House flagship survey whose findings have been published annually since 1972, is the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties. The survey ratings and narrative reports on 195 countries and fifteen territories are used by policymakers, the media, international corporations, civic activists, and human rights defenders to monitor trends in democracy and track improvements and setbacks in freedom worldwide. The Freedom in the World political rights and civil liberties ratings are determined through a multi-layered process of research and evaluation by a team of regional analysts and eminent scholars. The analysts used a broad range of sources of information, including foreign and domestic news reports, academic studies, nongovernmental organizations, think tanks, individual professional contacts, and visits to the region, in conducting their research. The methodology of the survey is derived in large measure from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and these standards are applied to all countries and territories, irrespective of geographical location, ethnic or religious composition, or level of economic development.

Book Soldiers Martyrs Traitors and Exiles

Download or read book Soldiers Martyrs Traitors and Exiles written by Tricia Redeker Hepner and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldiers, Martyrs, Traitors, and Exiles is an exploration of the Eritrean struggle for independence from Ethiopia, waged from 1961 to 1991, and the postindependence nation-building project. The book focuses on the way the Eritrean revolution drew refugees and exiles in the urban United States and nationalist guerrilla fighters in the Horn of Africa together in a common, yet contested, political agenda. Through a combination of ethnography and creative exposition, anthropologist Tricia Redeker Hepner recounts the experiences of Eritreans in their homeland and in the United States, illuminating the lives of men and women who participated in the independence movement. Highlighting both the personal and institutional dimensions of political transformation and struggle, the book provides insight into how the transnational nature of the Eritrean revolution shaped diaspora communities and the nation-state, enhancing authoritarian rule while also inspiring resistance movements for democratization and human rights. Soldiers, Martyrs, Traitors and Exiles provides a moving and trenchant critique of political intolerance and violence, as well as an inspiring portrait of the strength and resilience of a people whose lives have been profoundly shaped by war, forced migration, and the promises and failures of nationalism in the global era.

Book An African Revolution Reclaimed

Download or read book An African Revolution Reclaimed written by Mesfin Hagos and published by . This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mesfin Hagos joined the Eritrean war of independence in 1967 at the tender age of nineteen years. He rose to prominence and became an iconic figure of the nationalist movement by dint of his brilliance, strength of character, iron discipline, and tireless learning and self-improvement. He was at the scene during the most difficult turns and twists of the nationalist movement and led its most decisive battles. This book is as much the story of his life as it is an account of the Eritrean war of independence and struggle for freedom. It is a story of ungrieved losses and uncelebrated heroism. It is a tale of un-indemnified sacrifices and imperiled gains. The milestones of the nationalist movement and government came with its own unexpiated missteps. This book bears witness to all that and points toward a way out.' - from the introduction by Awet Tewelde Weldemichael.
