As the test of comparison between the temperature of tie seasons of 1830 and 1831, the following is the scale of the external atmosphere tor the month of May. The first of June was the day appointed for the araputaton of Taylor's foot, as Mr. Mc'Diarmid evidently saw, that it never could be of any further use to him. The diseased part was poulticed every day, since he was brought on board, made sometimes with soft bread, and at another time with oatmeal. I' was, however, the particular wish of Taylor, that Capt. Ross should be on board at the time when the operation took place, and therefore it was postponed until his return. It became, however, a question with Mr. McTJiarmid, whether the postponement of the operation might not endanger the life of his patient, and therefore he determined not to wait the return of Capt. Ross; on the inspection of the foot, however, it was found to be too much swelled, to allow of the operation being performed, and therefore the postponement became a matter of necessity. The return of Capt. Ross was not looked for, for some days, but, to the great surprise of the crew, he suddenly mau his appearance amongst them, leaving his party nearly a day's journey behind him. From the well known repugnance of Capt. Rosb, to expose himself, without the most urgent necessity, to any inclemency of the weather, his arrival could not have jeen looked for on this day, as the wind was excessively high, with the snow drifting so heavily, that it was difficult to discern a hundred yards in advance. His motive for leaving his party, and travelling to the ship by himself never transpired; nor, perhaps, was there any foundation for the rumour, which was current on board, as to the cause which impelled him to an act, so...

This book was released on 2006-01-03 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northwest Passage was repeatedly sought for over four centuries. From the first attempt in the late 15th century to Roald Amundsen's famous voyage of 1903-1906 where the feat was first accomplished to expeditions in the late 1940s by the Mounties to discover an even more northern route, author Alan Day covers all aspects of the ongoing quest that excited the imagination of the world. This compendium of explorers, navigators, and expeditions tackles this broad topic with a convenient, but extensive cross-referenced dictionary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Arthur Herman’s How the Scots Invented the Modern World comes a narrative that charts the remarkable—yet often overlooked or misidentified—Scottish contribution to Arctic exploration The search for the Northwest Passage is filled with stories of tragedy, adventure, courage, and endurance. It was one of the great maritime challenges of the era. It was not until the 1850’s that the first one-way partial transit of the passage was made. Previous attempts had all failed, and some, like the ill-fated attempted by Sir John Franklin in 1845 ended in tragedy with the loss of the entire expedition, which was comprised of two ships and 129 men. Northern Lights reveals Scotland’s previously unsung role in the remarkable history of Arctic exploration. There was the intrepid John Ross, an eccentric hell-raiser from Stranraer and a veteran of three Arctic expeditions; his nephew, James Clark Ross, the most experienced explorer of his generation and discoverer of the Magnetic North Pole; Dr. John Richardson of Dumfries, who became an accidental cannibal and deliberate executionaer of a murderer as well as an engaging natural historian; and Orcadian John Rae, the man who first discovered evidence of Sir John Franklin and his crew’s demise. Northern Lights also pays tribute and reveals other overlooked stories in this fascinating era of history: the Scotch Irish, the whalers, and especially the Inuit, whose unparalleled knowledge of the Arctic environment was often indispensible. For anyone fascinated by Scottish history or hungry for tales of Arctic adventure, Northern Lights is a vivid new addition to the rich tradition of polar narratives.

Download or read book The Spectral Arctic written by Shane McCorristine and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visitors to the Arctic enter places that have been traditionally imagined as otherworldly. This strangeness fascinated audiences in nineteenth-century Britain when the idea of the heroic explorer voyaging through unmapped zones reached its zenith. The Spectral Arctic re-thinks our understanding of Arctic exploration by paying attention to the importance of dreams and ghosts in the quest for the Northwest Passage. The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin’s lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these spectral stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the far North in the past. This revisionist historical account allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the location of Franklin’s ships.

Download or read book The Waterless Sea written by Christopher Pinney and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirages have long astonished travelers of the sea and beguiled thirsty desert voyagers. Traditional Chinese and Japanese poetry and art depict the above-horizon, superior mirage, or fata morgana, as exhalations of clam-monsters. Indian sources relate mirages to the “thirst of gazelles,” a metaphor for the futility of desire. Starting in the late eighteenth century, mirages became a symbol in the West of Oriental despotism—a negative, but also enchanted, emblem. But the mirage motif is rarely simply condemnatory. More often, our obsession with mirages conveys a sense of escape, of fascination, of a desire to be deceived. The Waterless Sea is the first book devoted to the theories and history of mirages. Christopher Pinney navigates a sinuous pathway through a mysterious and evanescent terrain, showing how mirages have impacted politics, culture, science, and religion—and how we can continue to learn from their sublimity.
