Book excerpt: The LAST STANZA - An Anthology of Poems from Tel Aviv is the first book from StanzAviv, a creative collective of writers associated with Bar Ilan University and Tel Aviv University. STANZA members (or ‘Stanzites’) come from Israel, USA, UK, France, Canada, Latvia and beyond. Israel is a dramatic place and the poetry in this selection is humorous, political, tragic and inspiring. Topics range from seeking refuge, travelling in Africa, war, love, meditations on existence, being Jewish at Christmas, internet banking, waking up drunk on a riverside and more. Most poems in this ‘Stanzology’ are in English, plus there is a section in Hebrew. All profits from this book go to the ARDC (African Refugee Development Center), an NGO in south Tel Aviv that provides shelter, education, counseling and advice to refugees and asylum seekers in Israel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dictionary is an excellent resource, but sometimes the very proper words in the dictionary aren't the ones you need to precisely describe a person, place, thing, or emotion. Edward Gorey and Lewis Carroll never needed to explain their nonsense words-either they were understood or not, but a sense of them tickled the surrounding lines and gave their writing a new color and flavor. Readers may not understand every undictionary entry in this issue, but they may quite like the poems' textures as you chew. I've always loved discovering the pain, joy, loss, love, drama, or unusual experience that went into creating works of art: paintings, songs, novels, and poetry. I asked contributors to let readers look behind the curtain for this issue, and the results are magnificent. Poets are, by nature, brave. Shards of their souls are on display with each piece of writing. With these postscripts, we are allowed to see even deeper into their hearts.

These are unusual times. What has altered in your life or the lives of those around you? What angers you? What is better this year than in the past? What will never be the same going forward? Those were the questions asked of poets for this issue. The world is divided along several lines as we head into 2021. The pandemic is unlike anything experienced before. Tensions are running high between coworkers, educators and those they teach, neighbors, and even lifelong friends and family members. Relationships are dissolving Left and Right. The masked and unmasked glare at each other. The air we breathe and the surfaces we touch and the people we love are all potential killers. It's a plexiglass world, muffled and fogged. Family dynamics have shifted dramatically. And that which seems to be salvation-the vaccines-may not end social distancing for a very long time to come. We communicate via screens and signs and tears of longing and frustration. This will undoubtedly be the start and end of too many things. There is likely no one who doesn't know someone who was infected by the coronavirus-or killed by it. Poetry can't solve the toughest problems of society, but maybe it can offer a new perspective on them. There are off-topic poems herein, as well. Touching and funny, surprising and philosophical-they offer the chance to take a break from the stresses and strains eating into every aspect of our daily lives.

Book excerpt: Naming the Unnameable: An Approach to Poetry for the New Generation assembles a wide range of poetry from contemporary poets, along with history, advice, and guidance on the craft of poetry. Informed by a consideration to the psychology of invention, Michelle Bonczek Evory¿s writing philosophy emphasizes both spontaneity and discipline, teaching students how to capture the chaos in our memories, imagination, and bodies with language, and discovering ways to mold them into their own cosmos, sculpt them like clay on a page. Exercises aim to make writing a form of play in its early stages that gives way to more enriching insights through revision, embracing the writing of poetry as both a love of language and a tool that enables us to explore ourselves and understand the world. Naming the Unnameable promotes an understanding of poetry as a living art and provides ways for students to involve themselves in the growing contemporary poetry community that thrives in America today.

Book excerpt: A darkly humorous new collection of poems by the Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author of Wideawake Field and Amity and Prosperity If Men, Then, Eliza Griswold’s second poetry collection, charts a radical spiritual journey through catastrophe. Griswold’s language is forthright and intimate as she steers between the chaos of a tumultuous inner world and an external landscape littered with SUVs, CBD oil, and go bags, talismans of our time. Alternately searing and hopeful, funny and fraught, the poems explore the world’s fracturing through the collapse of the ego, embodied in a character named “I”—a soul attempting to wrestle with itself in the face of an unfolding tragedy.

Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this work bridges the gap between the study of poetic form, which tends to isolate form from meaning and structural poetics, which tends to focus on meaning without considering the stanza’s impact. Beginning with an examination of the various definitions of the stanza, the book goes on to describe the many forms of the stanza and the different strategies by which poets achieve stanzaic units of meaning. It then evaluates the logical relationships between stanzas, and, finally, assesses their place and function as parts within the poetic whole. This work will be of interest to those studying poetry and literature.

'Many poets make us smile; how many poets make us laugh - or, in that curious phrase, "laugh out loud" (as if there's another way of doing it)? Who else uses an essentially conversational idiom to achieve such a variety of emotional effects? Who else takes us, and takes us so often, from sunlit levity to mellifluous gloom?... Larkin, often, is more than memorable: he is instantly unforgettable.' - Martin Amis
