Book Mimesis in a Cognitive Perspective

Download or read book Mimesis in a Cognitive Perspective written by Nicolae Babuts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mimesis is a critical and philosophical term going back to Aristotle. It carries a wide range of meanings, including imitation, representation, mimicry, the act of expression, and the presentation of self. In modern literary criticism, mimesis has received renewed attention in the last two or three decades and been subject to wide-ranging interpretations. Nicolae Babuts looks at the concept of mimesis from a cognitive perspective. He identifies two main strands: the mimetic relation of art and poetry to the world, defined in terms of reference to an external reality, and the importance of memory in the making of plots or storytelling.Babuts suggests that there is a material identity we cannot know beyond the limits of our senses and intellect and a symbolic or coded identity that is processed by memory. All writers, including Mallarme in his esoteric poetry, Flaubert in his realist narratives, and Mihai Eminescu, the Romanian poet, in his romantic poems, rely on mimetic strategies to link the two identities: the images in memory to the outside reality. All order their narratives in accordance with the dynamics of memory. Babuts describes this phenomenon with great insight, showing how new traditions are formed.

Book Mihai Eminescu The Legend of the Evening Star Selected Poems

Download or read book Mihai Eminescu The Legend of the Evening Star Selected Poems written by Adrian George Sahlean and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems and prose by Romanian 'national poet' Mihai Eminescu (1850 -1889), considered Europe's last great Romantic poet and celebrated by UNESCO as Year-2000-Poet-of-the-Year. Translator Adrian G. Sahlean is viewed as the poet's premier voice in English, and his rendition of Eminescu's masterpiece "Legenda Luceafarului" (The Legend of the Evening Star) was twice staged off-Broadway in 2005 and 2008. The mirror display of texts in the bilingual volume allows for instant comparison of the original with the English version for those with philological inclination. Revered and celebrated by Romanians the world over, Mihai Eminescu is often described as the essence of the Romanian soul. His work encompassed every genre of poetry as well as prose, fiction and journalism, and helped modernize the literary use of the Romanian language. Eminescu is considered Europe's last great Romantic poet, but his legacy transcends the confines of Romanticism, Western traditions in literature and philosophy, and influences from the Far East; blessed with the touch of genius, his synthesis creates a personal world illuminating the life of man, and the cosmos, in archetypal images of universal appeal.

Book Stephen the Great and Balkan Nationalism

Download or read book Stephen the Great and Balkan Nationalism written by Jonathan Eagles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans in 1475 at the Battle of Vaslui heralded the beginnings of a historic legacy. The victor became known as Stephen the Great or Athleta Christi, Champion of Christ. Perceived as the founder of a Balkan identity, Stephen the Great maintained Moldova's independence during periods of fierce Ottoman attack between 1457 and 1504. His Christian religious stance meant that, in the eyes of Europe, he had not only defeated a significant territorial threat but had elevated Christianity to a superior level as victors over its Muslim opponents. Here, Jonathan Eagles seeks to unveil the mechanisms behind this legacy, reviewing the state formations that allowed this national hero to emerge, and explaining the methods that preserve his memory in the region today. By combining the latest historical studies of the anti-Ottoman resistance with new archaeological findings, Stephen the Great and Balkan Nationalism engages with a fresh approach to the history of the Balkans, and reinvigorates the study of the Ottoman Empire's impact in Europe. This is an important book for those with an interest in medieval history, Balkan history and the Ottomans.

Download or read book Nationalism and Territory written by George W. White and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do nations come into conflict? What factors lead to the horrors of ethnic cleansing? This timely book offers clear-eyed answers to these questions by exploring how national identity is shaped by place, focusing especially on Serbia, Hungary, and Romania. Moving beyond studies of nationalism that consider only the economic and geostrategic value of territory, George W. White shows that the very core of national identity is intimately bound to specific places. Indeed, nations define themselves in terms of spaces that have historical, linguistic, and religious meaning, as Serbs have clearly demonstrated in Kosovo. These territories are concrete expressions of a nationAIs identity, both past and present. With his detailed analysis of the places that define national identity in Southeastern Europe, White convincingly shows why territorial disputes so often escalate into war.
